Im looking for a good all around Blu-Ray player such as the Sony BDP-S300 or the Panasonic BD30 that is good at upconverting Standard DVDs and also has excellent picture quality. I am open to suggestions. I want to compare to a Toshiba 35 that I have 30 days to return so want to get the best comparision. The Toshiba has been just "ok" to me. Im using this on a Sony KD-36XS955 HD screen.

They'll look the same as the A35. Your TV is your "weak link" as people tried to explain in the HD-DVD player forum.

Ok that is fine but I would like to satisfy my own curiosity and the only way to do that is also get a Blu-Ray Player as a comparision.

Im just asking which one is rated best for upconverting
standard DVDs and also excellent picture quality on BR DVD playback.

One may look better than the other on my screen.

Otherwise I may just go back to the OPPO 981 which did a great job.

If you run a search using upconverting or upconvert or upconversion or "best" as a single search work...title search only for this forum you'll find the other threads that have asked that same common question.

I'd get the Panny 30K and call it a day.

For my latest Reviews and Stuff google -> Joe Rod Home Theater .Com

I ended up getting the PS3 and its looking very good to me. I have been testing Blu-Ray and SD dvds and so far Im impressed. Im going to hookup the Toshiba A30 again and see if there is a big difference.

Sorry you are right. I had the Tosiba HD-A30 that I was comparing. I ended up returning it today. If froze on me last night which is not a good sign.
I am now using the PS3 which so far has been flawless.

Some will disagree, but I bought the inexpensive Samsung P1400 and am running the latest firmware v1.2 and love it.

It's a bit slow to respond to opening and loading, but other than that, we've had zero issues with it.

It does up convert SD DVD's very, very well. Not Blueray quality, but it sure makes watching old DVD movies a whole new experience on a nice Panny Plasma

Same result here. Only no firmware update/no issues.
