That makes perfect sense. But I wonder what model #1 will be? Each of their DVD players has been well-received and it would be nice to make a splash with their first Blu-Ray player.

I also wonder if they are going to branch out into other product lines. Could be there is not enough room for product distinction in Blu-Ray, apart from offering superior legacy and multimedia support. Maybe something in the way of a media server?

I hasten to add I have no inside info. I've just been thinking about such appliances recently, so my thoughts turn to Oppo because I have been pleased with their products.

Well, they certainly do have the capabilities to branch out. Remember they did have the MP3 player, the sound system, and the tv that they were trying to sell in the US. They apparantly didn't do very well, and thus discontinued sales in the US. If you go to their other international sites, they do have some "other" products there. Wether they would delve into something as sophisticated as a medeia server, well, we shall see .

As for the BR players, now that I think about it, the only thing that does really make sense is to make something that sets them apart from the competion. That would be FEATURES (#1), reliability, customer service/support, and price. The other companies have those things, but we know what Oppo is capable of and has the ability to blow the competition out of the water. So in order to do so, they have to have #1 hit the streets first... and that means flagship first, followed by a budget bitstreamer. If they could beef up their infrastructure, it would be nice if they could do both at the same time.

Unless Oppo makes their first Blu-ray player a Universal model that does SACD and DVD-A as well, I would be very surprised to see it priced at $600.

I would expect sub $500 from Oppo.

The problem with the other products is that OPPO has no market presence. For MP3 players you are going up against Apple, then Creative and Microsoft, then venerable manufacturers like iRiver. There was no real reason to purchase OPPO.

Same with the LT-201 product. I could go into a store and purchase a similar display from Toshiba or Samsung.

But not everything is pulling up daisies. Look at the HM-31 product. It has been very successful for them. Competition is smaller for switching products, the design is elegant, and the price is reasonable.

I think they can be very successful in the Blu-Ray market once they release their product. As long as they are price competitive (note: does not mean lower than the competition) and offer more features than the competition, they will do well.

This seems the most likely scenario but who knows.
A BR player is going to be more expensive to make than a DVD player and the market for a universal is really quite small.
I would guess Christmas at the earliest.

Quite a few of us anticipate that they aren't going to be able to get hardware to market before 2009 - why would they choose to waste time on a player without including Profile 2.0 support.

It'll be profile 2.0. Wouldn't be realistic to think otherwise.

Since I own the 980 & 983, I would be happy with a player that had Blu-ray capability with the 2.0 spec as their introduction.

Will it be the 985 or 988 is another question.

Despite the rumers that such formats like HD DVD and SACD are not real, they are in fact REAL . Actually, thousands of capable players and millions of discs have been sold to cunsumers throughout the entire world.

and depending on the cost to add it, a combo player that worked well would be a niche OWNED. Have to wonder what R&D they spent looking at the HD DVD format while the war was still on, any player that behaved remotely as well as a buck-n-a-quarter DVD player woulda' sold like gangbusters (resume, frame advance, zoom, anyone? )
model number will be 1111

The addition of hd-dvd to the player would be great. Good news is that the format is frozen, unlike Blu Ray. (Frozen looks a lot like dead, just colder).

Hmmmmm he says as he strokes his gotee. Mandrake gestures hypnotically and gazes into his crystal ball. "No.....not before the end of the year", he says.

Check out the numerous posts in this thread with the responses from OPPO on this same subject.

Anyone who picks up a player at their Mt View HQ should ask. That's what I did, but now my info is 6 weeks out of date.

If it's not worth waiting until the last minute to do, then it's not worth doing.

If they could finalize the hardware, I'd buy one even if the software was still in beta. I don't mind a few DIY updates.

Well, I for one will continue to keep an eye on this thread as I have not invested in a BD player given all of the "motion".

The hope is the folks at OPPO will deliver a solid unit with good value. The measure of "value" though will be up to the individual and the many vocal members of this forum....

So, as info, announcements, rumors, etc.... come to light I hope to see it here....

Me thinks we'll hear announcements around September at Cedia. Pricing likely to be sub $400 (in keeping with Oppo's tradition of delivering great value). Well. we'll see.

Considering the price of the 983 (which I think is over-priced), the price will likely be at least $500.

I think this really depends on what chipset they decide to use for the SD-DVD upconverting. If they hope to make this unit a next step from the 983 with Blu-ray then yes, N or $500. However, do you think they'll still be above $500 if they opt to go with, say, the SD-DVD performance of the 981?

This is all conjecture but I think they will make a player with one chipset for all. So, it will likely be similar to the 988/981 approach. The all-in-one solutions are only OK at up-converting right now, but there are always new chipsets...

$500.00 SACD, DVD A, BD, a great SD-DVD upconverting. Sounds like a deal

The $400. price point for a full-featured next gen Blu-ray player is increasingly crowded with competition from the major manufacturers. Sony is rumored to be bringing out a PS3 80 GB model at that price point and its next gen standalone deck player, the Sony BDP-S350, is now available also at that price point.

These big companies have the advantage of mass production and can buy internals - chips, drives, etc. - at quantity prices.

More competitive pressure on OPPO Digital. I'm glad I'm not involved in its decision-making.

The pipe dream should also include backward compatiblity with HD DVD, in addition to DVD Audio and SACD.

With an optional attachment that opens cans and plays 8 Track Tapes.

Seriously, I want one too, but it can't be super cheap and do everything. This player will either compete at the low end frills area or the high end bells and whistles. If one had to make an educated guess, check the history books. How did they begin the DVD era?
