Here is an e-mail I received from a very reliable professional who was at CEDIA.

"Oppo has a Prototype Blu Ray player in the DVDO Booth....
No word on pricing and they are targeting Winter 09."

Please note the word Prototype, not mock-up.

How negative!

Let's see what further information we can get.

Then and only then can we logically begin to form any opinions.

I'm simply trying to temper the unbridled enthusiasm.

^^ I like the way this man thinks.

I'd like it even better if this could be a stocking stuffer...well, figuratively at least.

And he is right!

SnellKrell indicated in the other thread that, indeed, they were referring to early 2009....which makes much more sense.

No, I didn't!

I quoted a reliable source who said "...targeting Winter 09."

That is all that was said about a date!

Not early, not late, and it's a "target"!

No more, no less!!!!!!

Well, to be accurate, that is NOT "all that was said about a date".

You said:

in 2009 - hence - Winter 09!

The implication was that "they" were referring to early 2009, not late 2009.

In any case, I agree that you didn't specifically indicate that your source said early 2009 is what he/they were shooting for.

Probably $699. If you take a $399 983H and add a $299 Blu-Ray player that's what you get.

Na... you're not adding those two players on TOP of one another... there is a significant amount of hardware that is SHARED between them. I speculate that it should be less.

Even at that price if the performance matches everything else that OPPO has
done it will still kill the competition since no one else offers an all in one
player.

Yes, even though no one else has the problem, there's no way it was your PC that had the problem.

My guess would be something early in 2009 also, like January-March timeframe (the sooner the better). The other thread has a link to HDTV Magazine where the guy spoke with someone from Oppo. He says "They hope to have it out in time for Christmas. No features, price or firm release date information is available yet." I would guess after the holidays though.

I was considering the Pioneer 51, but now I might wait for this one (if I can exercise that much patience).

In time for Xmas would clearly be indicating Xmas of 2009. I would really be surprised if this showed up in the next 3-6 months when they can't even show off a prototype that powers up.

If this were a leaner deck then I would say maybe. Considering however that Oppo is considered one of the best in the business and might be looking for an extremely aggressive approach on this deck (super upscaling as well as playback of ALL disc formats) I just can't see it being available in less than a year.

The format war might have complicated their plans too. They might have been planning on including HD DVD playback or they might have not wanted to sink resources in until the format war was over, which means they might have only gotten serious about development over the past 6-9 months.

But if they are adding HD Audio decoding you are talking more then a $299 BR player, more like a $499 BR player. I would be willing to go as high as $799 if it has all the bells and whistles of the 983 plus a top notch decoding BR player with 7.1 out.

It is a static demo for ABT to showcase what products will be using the ABT 2010. ABT does not need to demonstrate the capabilities of OPPO's player. That is not their responsibility.

The DV-983H, which also premiered last year at ABT's booth, was delayed several times in order to ensure the highest quality out of the player. Assuming no major hardware or software issues present themselve (as with the DV-983H) then the player has the distinct possibility of being released in time for Christmas.
