And Alan G can start any darned thread he wants. Probably easiest for him from the show site anyway.

I look forward to the availability of this blu-ray player. I also welcome Oppo taking their time to make sure they get it right out of the box. Too many blu-ray players are hitting the market requiring immediate firmware updates.

Blu-Ray is still cutting edge technology. The Oppo player will also likely need a firmware update "right out of the box" to play the latest discs authored with all the 2.0 features.

These machines are effectively PCs. The days of simple little standalone appliances that turned on in 2 seconds and played all discs seamlessly ended when the new formats with all of their advanced features, seamless branching, Ethernet connections, java support, etc, came out.

I tried merging his thread into this one and my mouse shocked my hand.

There's no reason to keep this thread open. I've been hoping it would die out gracefully. There's more real info in the new thread where this is mostly wishful thinking.

I am closing this thread as the new thread has info about an ACTUAL oppo blu ray player. Its a matter of when, not if anymore.
Use this Oppo BDP-83 info thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...1063625&page=7

Closing.

Just enjoy HD in whatever form you can (Sat, Cable, D-VHS, OTA, HD DVD, or BD).
