We share your passion and excitement in ultimate PQ home theater experience! Thank you for your hard work posting & taking time to take excellent photos.

Many of us would aspire to do a similar home theater setup. Maybe one day I can upgrade my current room too!

Size matters and your 120" Trumps my 78". It seems every near decade when I afford a major TV or A/V upgrade I go bigger. Once you go bigger in screen size, one can never be satisfied with less!

I started off with a 25" > 32" > 55" > 65" > 70" > and now finally the 78". I am in awe year after year with all the PQ improvements they come up with.

PS: Happy anniversaries! Also it appears a sequel to Prometheus is coming in 2017! Here is a link & info: http://www.prometheus2-movie.com/

That JVC looks spectacular. Maybe it's your camera, but I have been pretty much set on the 5040 b/c the JVC doesn't meet my throw requirements. The 5040 pics I have seen so far are nowhere near that good.

Maybe I need a smaller screen...

So almost all the screen shots over the last 6 months or so are actually from a Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone,
Just point and click, upload to photobucket directly from the photobucket app only takes a few seconds.
HA! I take my pictures the same way with the same phone.

Hi Pio

What's happening with the reds ?
Some of the pics of faces in the Martian look way too hot.
And the Pic of Vitoria in Oblivion looks cartoonish.

Is that your camera giving the red push ?

Ok thanks

So in reality Reds are not pushed ?
Do you like the skin tones you are getting ?

I read somewhere in one of the JVC posts, I can't remember which now, that they had to work around taming the Reds a bit.
Is that True ?
In your opinion, Does the JVCs have an inherent red push or not?

Thanks

Calibrated by eye. But been doing that a long time and my grey scale is spot on.

After Cedia I'll contact Mike and see if he can get me in touch with a forum member near me.

Thanks

BTW I have a felling the issue viewing reds might be that most monitor can't do WCG rec2020 correctly ?
And probably a handheld phone can't capture it either - just guessing.

(on my radar for at least 6 years now)
I was at a GTG in Vancouver a couple years ago and the owners of Funk Audio came with one of their 18's. Gorgeous finish and prodigious output. During one of the Oliphant scenes in Lord of the Rings it felt like the concrete slab under my feet was vibrating. My preference would still be DIY for the money, but for anyone with the cash to support a Canadian craftsman Funk would be top of the list.

Just finished reading the entire thread and loving your build. I actually prefer builds like yours vs the rooms you mention you strive for but don't have the cash to do. Builds like yours imo is more practical and reachable for those of us with the passion but not the funds. Unfortunately I can't yet afford a house where I can get a decent sized room for HT-only use, so only a very modest HT in the living room will do for now. I am still waiting on Xbox One S to drop to $250 as well as gain ability to stream HD audio so I can become UHD BD capable.

Would you mind posting some shots of Lucy UHD BD? Saw that one in the theaters and while the story was meh, the visuals and audio were amazing. I found myself just staring at Scarlet Johanson the whole way through.

I might give Lucy a re-spin again sometime this weekend and get a few more,
it really is a reference quality 4K Bluray for sure! Sometimes the camera just doesn't do it justice.

Today I picked up a BD of Mumford & Sons Road to Red Rocks, just $19!
Loved It! DTS-MA 5.1 expanded to 7.4.4 with Neural:X was Awesome!!!

Tomorrow afternoon I'm doing a Captain America Double Header

I just bought it! Pumped up. I'm setting it aside, and not watching it until I get my upcoming theater built... I'm saving myself.

Thanks for the pics, really can't wait til I get my hands on a UHD BD Player, pretty much waiting on either XB1S or the Philips player to get a $50 discount.

I do expect that to be taken care of at some point, at least MS has said it's in the list of features to add. Figure might as well get a gaming console to go with a UHD BD player.

HiYa! Just wanted to give a quick "hello" and "THANKS" for your helpful guidance on setting up Scenes for Atmos and DTS:X. (For those interested go here in this thread: Finally in my New House...basement plans .)

How impressed can a AV geek be! A full 12 Scenes setup on your A3060 -- those shots of the Scenes on your smartphone AV Controller are just fantastic. I'm more impressed with THAT than all the movie pics you posted! (And I enjoy those pics too, btw.)

I saw reference to you enjoying a DTS HD MA bluray with NeuralX. I definitely agree, but I have to say that you shouldn't forget the Enhanced DSP mode. I'm watching the Lord of the Rings again and have found that the effects are distinctly clearer in that mode than in NeuralX. Stopped the movie several times to A/B between those options always came out on the Enhanced side. But the Lone Ranger, clearly was better with NeuralX. But frankly, before I commit to that statement, I need to go back and re-check after two big changes in my listening room. I completed install of my Rear Presence with the RSL C34Es and I just setup the Atmos and DTS:X Scenes. Hard to tell what effect getting it "right" may have. (BTW, my Atmos Scene has Dolby Enabled for the Front Presence as I'm using the ELAC A4s.)

You must live without sleep, man! Don't know how you find the time to dedicate to your theater and to viewing. But please don't stop...

Nice! Quite a deal to get Celebration Day at that price!

And I got to admit to having more and more of those DOH! incidents... At least there are good folks like you to adjust my aged mind.

I have a Samsung 10.1 that sits almost unused except when I travel! I mostly use my smartphone for the AV Controller app and totally forget about the tablet. Even when I noticed how nice the app is on the tablet, I haven't made that adjustment to keep it as part of my listening room. That is corrected as of right NOW!

Just one more reason to be thankful for your input and advice. and big <thumbs up>.

It all looks really good, and you're right. On the comparison shots, the hdr looks a bit better I think. But, that's screen shots for ya. Not like truly being there.

Hi Pio, it's been some time since i spoke with you. I got the x750 installed this week and the basement work is almost getting there. Unlike yours, my baby didn't come with the latest firmware or the BT.2020 profile. Not surprisingly, it took some time to find the software and the hardware to get it installed.

Right now i have just watched a few snippets of upscaled Blu Rays and some 3D BR discs. I know you don't like 3D. But Gravity in 3D wa just mind blowing, specifically when space debris come right at you.

I find the Cinema 1 default setup to be good enough. But I haven't had the time to test anything else. I found tge BT.2020 profile too dark for my regular discs. Let me know, if possible, the picture settings you are using.

I will perhaps get a calibration work done later after a 100 or so burn in hours. Haven't got the 4k player yet. But hopefully around Black Friday Boxing Day period.
I see you have a new toy in the Integral. Congratulations! Keep the pictures of your setup coming. Oh! One more thing. I am not sure how to get the Rec.709 profile. I have gone through zombie 10k's setup. But still not surebwhat to do to activate the Rec. 709. Any hints?

Somehow I could not find your setting pictures any more. A few snapshots with your settings will really help.

Once again, thanks.

(that's the color profile all 1080 blurays are shipped with)

BT.2020 is the color profile for 4K/UHD/HDR only, not regular 1080p bluray.
Every time you swap sources you have to swap your color profile (via memory slot) in the JVC menu accordingly.

When I load my 4K Low custom setting with BT.2020
it also loads the appropriate gamma "D" settings

Picture Tone 12
Dark Level 5
Bright Level 4

Those "may" need to be set manually for the first time if your unit did not come with BT.2020
I'm not 100% sure. One final tweak I made for HDR was to adjust Contrast +14, Brightness +4.
That may not work for you though because your room is different, screen is different
and throw distance will play a large part in how bright your image will be.

Once you get that dialed in
you should end up with a user slot for:

2D (regular 1080p rec.709 color profile)
3D (similar but probably brighter, possibly high lamp mode)
4K with HDR and color profile BT.2020

If you add an HDFury Integral to remove the HDR flag
you will want another 4K setting with a modified BT.2020
Regular Gamma at 2.3, everything else similar to 2D Low including the iris setting.

Renamed 4K SDR

Removing HDR from 4K/UHD Bluray restores the brightness to more closely resemble SDR BT.709 bluray,
but has higher definition, wide color gamut, and allows the dynamic iris to function again.
(HDR flag disables the dynamic iris when playing 4K blurays)
...so the fade to 100% black between scenes never really goes black with HDR material, just dark grey.

With the HDFury Integral in the chain, I now get the deepest dark fade to black with a functioning iris.
The Intergral is a "set it and forget it device", never has to be changed and has no effect on regular 1080p content.

For the best 3D settings on your JVC
you'll have to check with the guys in the RS500/RS600 thread that use 3D.

More on the JVC/Intergal combo posted in the RS400 pages recently here:

Thanks Pio. Very helpful, as always. I noticed that zombie's settings as close as BT.709. But then there also are manni's settings that include downloadable 709 colour profile. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-digital-hi-end-projectors-3-000-usd-msrp/2246658-jvc-calibration-software-v6-2015-models-x9000-x7000-x5000-rs400-rs500-rs600.html#/topics/2246658?_k=qjgisg

Plus, I noticed JVC's own settings that include the reference colour profile as well. http://www3.jvckenwood.com/english/download/dla-x950r_x750r_x550r_x9000_x7000_x5000_xc7890r_xc6890 r_xc5890r_rs600_rs500_rs400_uhd.html

Are these two above options applicable for regular 1080p discs? Specifically, did you get a chance to try the rec.709 colour profile?

Honestly for 3D, I find low lamp at iris -5 to -4 bright enough. I watched Gravity and Mad Max 3D's only for the timebeing so my experience is pretty limited.

The 2D at low lamp settings and iris at -8 to -6 works amazing.

PS. I am at about 11.5 to 12 ft and the screen is 10 ft wide cinemascope (130 inch diagonal).

Great room and your pictures look incredible. How do video games play on the JVC? Any noticeable lag? Thx!
