Following from JVC thread, I"m thinking if I should order HDFury as well. There are many 4K movies available to rent now so wondering if that's a good option. I"m new to HDFury but if I understand it correctly, it allows JVC to play any HDR 4k in SDR. Without it, any 4k HDR can only be played in HDR. So HDFury allows us to play in SDR and also allows us to utilize bt 2020. Is that correct?

Is this this right one to get? https://www.hdfury.com/shop/splitter...60-444-600mhz/

Some (not all) 4K/UHD Blurays come out just a little too dark because most projectors are not quite bright enough for HDR.
Sure you can raise your contrast/brightness levels, but hat also raises the black floor (to dark grey).
The HDR "Flag" also disable the JVC's auto iris, and you wont get those deep "fade to blacks" between scenes.

The HDFury Integral EDID 10 (For SDR 4K BT.2020 4:2:0 ) removes the flag for HDR,
You then setup a custom memory slot on the JVC for 4K SDR that still maintains BT.2020 and Wide Color Gammut.

If you choose to simply turn HDR off in the player, without an HDFury, it reverts to Rec.709 with no WCG (same as regular bluray)
Cool. How big of a difference do you see with HDR off and UHD played in Rec.709 vs BT.2020? Is it an obvious and easily noticeable difference?

So Pio, when I set up my X500 it is said to upconvert from 1080p to '4k' (faux k).
I don't have plans to run 4k material as my Anthem mrx710 is not 2.2 hdpc. And besides the pj is not 4k.

I have a 2 yr old Panny bluray player. Do I need the 900?
I want the best image quality possible. The JVC pj is a generation older than yours.
What would you do?

When I up-convert bluray to 4K with the Panny UB900 is looks almost 4K
(My personal preference) and the JVC processes the signal just like a real 4K Bluray.

You have a few options with your Anthem,
The UB900 has two HDMI out ports so you can send 1 HDMI out for audio only to the Anthem and the other to your projector for 4K HDMI 2.2 HDCP video.
(yes you will likely need new cables)

The downside is you have no display from anything connected to your Anthem.

Another option may be to use an HDFury Integral
It has 2HDMI in and 2 HDMI outputs and the ability to adjust HDCP

Throw an inquiry at the HDFury Integral section on the forum,
they seem pretty helpful at finding solutions for incompatible hardware with HDMI

Link: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/37-video-processors/

You'll probably want one to strip HDR from 4K/UHD bluray anyway

https://www.hdfury.com/

You know you're officially going down the rabbit hole now right?

Love the rabbit hole. This is great stuff. Thank you so much for your help Pio. I will be circling back to this thread alot.

(The UB900 does ship with a 6' 18Gbps HDMI cable)

I think I read somewhere that your best source (4K HDCP 2.2) should go to port 1 on the JVC
and the 1.4 HDMI (1080 sources) should go to HDMI port 2 on the JVC, check the manual to be sure.
Hey Pio...I tried Zombies setup for my new 750...do I recall you having written up basic settings? Would you have a link? Thanks

Both use the same Gamma, brightness, iris etc...
Perfect, thank you...I'm currently tutoring (phone calls) Pat in Red Deer in regards to his x500 he bought from me...is there any chance that you "could" eventually be available for a call when I eventually fail? Perhaps PM me?

If that doesn't work for you, I have nothing else to offer

You'll have to make further inquires with the pro's who've owned these units for over a year.
They use custom calibrations, software, light meters and colorimeters to tweak their systems to perfection.
...and many of them have owned several generations of JVC's prior to the current models.

Like I said, I'm totally new to JVC's,

Everything I know has already been posted on the last couple pages,

Don't be afraid to ask them, they don't bite.
No worries, for rec 709, bt2020 with and w/o HDR, curious what do u have the iris, contrast and brightness set for each respectively...did I miss that on a previous page?

Did someone else set up your previous projector(s) for you?

Yes, I had Lion AV out of the u.s. Calibrate my x500. He vacations near Halifax in the summer. Just don't feel like dropping $400 smacks again...I may actually purchase a Spyder 5 and try Autocal. I also Watch lots of hockey which drives bulb hours up so will need to tweak settings frequently as the bulb dims.

Calibration

Hey Pio...did I read somewhere in your thread u used digital video essentials HD basics disc to set your blacks and contrast for 709 and 2020? If u did, I just got the disc, 709 turned out ok for blacks and contrast by adjusting according to the black test pattern and the contrast test pattern but when I set for SDR bt2020 using the patterns the actually video was way too washed, same with HDR...the patterns adjusted ok but the actually movie looked like crap...any insights Sir?

Pretty sure you need an HDFury intergral installed before you properly set things up for SRD BT.2020.

Sony Bluray and 4K/UHD movies have a set of test patterns
accessibly by hitting 7-6-6-9 (S O N Y) on my Panny remote.
Sorry, can't recall which one I used.

My only adjustments for HDR BT.2020 were Contrast +14, Brightness +4
Thanks man, yes my DVE is from Amazon just today but I think it's a 2008 BR version. Yes I do have an integral with correct edids installed...actually for rec 709, would I just still leave the Integral on edid 10? Would it just pass thru?

I did switch it to 8 for HDR...actually I'll double check that one, I know I switched the pj to HDR...

Also for 709 and SDR 2020 you left contrast and brightness at default 0?

R u saying Sony's Lucy would have the test patterns?

DLA-X500 will be here tomorrow, I just put my order in for a UXL18 for my 18hz tuned Marty Cube- it ships in 7 days. I took a week extra off in Dec. Good times.

I recall in one of the threads, Pio, you have had experience using the Monster power Centers.... Im wondering which one will allow my Anthem receiver to trigger one of its plugs for my subs amplifier. The subs amp is a Crown xls1500. Its a push button on/off switch. In other words it has no trigger input. So I would leave the amps button pushed in to 'on', have it plugged into one of the powercenter's plugs, and have that plug triggered, thereby powering the crown amp, upon the powering up of the Anthem.

I understand a guy can do that?

EDIT:
After some reading I just need to get me a power conditioner that has a trigger effect, but with a delay, so I don't get the 'thud' from my receiver powering on as well.

Are you suggesting the test patterns on Sony uhd movies are bt2020 test patterns?

I have a pair of Ascend Sierra Ones in cherry finish, and I enjoy looking at them as much as listening to them.

I don't know if I'd ever turn those on, or just put them on the kitchen table and look at them.

To my eye, the JVC and the OLED look very comparable. I have the same gear as you, but I can't get the Panny and JVC to link with a 4k 4:4:4 connection. I contacted JVC and they suggested trying certified 4k 18 cables. I'm running Blue Jeans now from 4 feet and only getting 1080P rec709. What cables do you use?

Nice Pictures of the JVC Vs. OLD, I like the JVC pictures better because of the details shown, the oled seems to be over exaggerating the whites, look at the clouds in pictures and also in the Star Trek movie, the top of the heads of the people. Looks great though. I'm A JVC Projector owner also so I'm a little biased lol.

If you're sending your signal through a Yamaha AVR you must put it in 4K Mode 1

it's in the advanced menu, where 4K Mode 2 is the factory default for lower bandwidth legacy devices/cables.

Snip from the Yamaha Manual:

Thanks for the reply. That 40" cable has to be good to output a strong signal of that length. And it seems to be reasonably priced. I need to rethink my choices in HDMI cabling.

Seeing how you have both the Panasonic UB900 and the Oppo-203, can you comment on how the Oppo fares in terms of upscaling regular BDs? I ask because I hear the Panasonic is fantastic in that regard.

The HDFury was ordered within two weeks later and that 3-way combo was a winner.
No need to ever even look at the Oppo, that would have been about the same price as
the Panny and HDFury combo...and from the sounds of the JVC thread...failed miserably
at HDR to SDR conversion.

..and Yes, regular 1080 bluray looks fantastic upscaled to 4K on the Panasonic.
My screen shots from Prometheus look better than many 4K/UHD's.
Oops, I thought you had posted about the Oppo being on the way. My mistake.

Anyway, the reason I had asked was because I have ordered the Oppo and am having a bit of buyer's remorse. The HDR to SDR conversion is a mess for now but I'm sure it will be fixed in a few months time. I'm actually more concerned about the upscaling capabilities of the Oppo compared to the Panny.

Been quiet here for a while. Pio, just wanted to stop by to let you know that I do believe I've decided on a JVC RS520, the new 500 that has a low lag game mode, which I'm sure you're already aware of. Your beautiful pics (and info) are one of the things that won me over from the Epson. Thanks for sharing!
