How has your painted concrete floor held up over the years? I'm not sure whether to go with paint or concrete stain.

Surprised to see an "update" to your theater thread...just like popping the lid on a time capsule.
Can't believe the old Epson is still soldiering on. The first of the UB's heading for bulb #5 ; simply amazing.

It was your freak'n make shift basement setup and stunning screenshots that helped pull me into this crazy hobby 5 years ago.
Thanks a lot man! Glad to see you're still finding time for the toys and the room. Carry on.

Reading reviews it seems that the Sony HW40ES's black level doesn't compare to the Epson 5030UB. You would need to step up to the 55ES which is probably $2000 more than the Epson. If you were happy with the original UB then the new model should be a noticeable step up, though I doubt you'll feel that the improvement is worth the $2500 replacement.
Happy shopping.

The projector that would not die!
If you do get the 5030UB it would be interesting to set both up and make a comparison, though the difference in brightness would likely overshadow all else.

The screen capture has great dark level but I am just wondering if you are losing details in the black. It's hard to tell from the screen capture so I'm just guessing.

Great looks like you've made good light treatment to your room to get the excellent black level.

Loved scrolling through all the pictures from Page 1.

I do have one question, what is that entertainment center?

I know it's been several years, but maybe they still make one like it. Is it an open back design, or closed with holes for cable management?

The Wall has the best opening number of any concern film I have seen. But the constant interjection of Roger's journey to Italy does not make the film any better. It is weird to suddenly go from concert high to some brightly lit day video clipping with Roger talking to his friend, and then back to the concert.

Love your theater. Also like that you look at the value proposition.
You have given me some ideas with the dark fabric and the stapling vs. frame application.

On the DSD direct, what disc spinner do you have, and have you tested for the unexpected 10 dB base boost with the disc spinner/Yamaha combination? I ask because I may get an RXA2050 to support a future Atmos setup and I would like to try DSD over HDMI.

8 Years! That sounds like my last project. I made the mistake of buying slightly old equipment then, thinking that I'd be into the room within months....Years later, the slightly old equipment is outdated. Your pictures look awesome, though.

Can you tell a significant difference between applying Neural:X to a non-Atmos non-DTS:X track and applying the Dolby upmixer to the same? If so, is it better in your opinion or just different?

And stereo I would guess (given the center channel distortion bug - unless that has been fixed?)

You are just trying to make me regret getting the refurbed 3040 aren't you?

The DSU sounds good to me. I'll just enjoy for now and wait to see what happens. I've got a Denon in another room that has DTS:X, but only max 5.2.1. I haven't even done the update yet ... or checked recently to see if it has been released.

Yes, a most interesting read indeed!

And the RX-V3900 is working fine as a "power amp" for the height/presence channels? No problems with low or high input levels?

I am planning for an Atmos/DTS:X setup but if I could resuse my current receiver for the extra channels it would be a great cost saver (it has a 7.1 multi channel input) and plenty of power.

...and 4 subs handle the <80Hz frequencies with 2400 watts total (4800w peak/dynamic)

I really like that the new AVR overall design/esthetics have not changed much over the last 10 years.

In fact my first Flagship Yamaha was "Almost" an RX-Z11
Yamaha's first 11 channel AVR way back in 2008.

The Z11 was way ahead of its time, nearly a decade before Atmos/DTS:X.
the Beast had all the goodies and weighed in at ~80lbs

It had 11 internal amps (7x140w + 4x50w for presence speakers)
I even had enough speakers ready to go....but the Z11 was $5k back then.
....
Now that is very good news! I have the old Pioneer flagship SC-09TX/SC-LX90 a.k.a. known as the "Susano". 10 x 140 W. It can bi-amp all the three front channels in a 7.1 configuration. Using the multichannel inputs I could potentially continue to drive my three front channels using the Susano in bi.amp mode and use the Yamaha for all the other 8 channels. Or bi-amp just the left and right channels using the Yamaha and using the Susano for all for the height channels. Potentially the newer Yamaha should sound better.

I need to visit my local dealer for a chat as soon as work permits

Hey, just went through your thread today and enjoyed reading your theater build as it has progressed over the years. I too have a Epson projector that just won't quit, but I waited until the 3010 came out to purchase a 1080P model. Still have a 720P Epson HC400 in the closet for a backup with an extra bulb for both projectors. Last I checked I had over 12,000 hours on the 3010 a few months ago. Mine did start shutting down like yours did and I had to replace the filter, no amount of cleaning would bring it back. Probably good idea to buy a new filter each time you replace the bulb.

You mentioned that your old Yamaha 3900 had macro functionality on the remote, does the 3050 do macro, and do the macros work with the mobile app? Like say I wanted to power up the TV, power on the AVR, Power on the satellite, and switch to the correct input with a single button. Then I want to watch a movie, so, power down satellite, power down TV, power up projector, power up Blu-Ray, and swap to appropriate input with a single button. Finally power down everything with a single button. Would something like this be possible with either the remote or the mobile app?

I'm not aware if the old 3900's remote would work with the mobile app,
I never utilized the 3900's network functions at all the whole time I had it, never even updated the firmware on it.

I do have a freebie android app (Peel-Smart Remote) that controls most of the gear in my home that the Yamaha AV app doesn't.
But I "think" you have to buy the premium version for macro ability. If you're an apple person, I think iRule might be a good option for you.

I have a harmony remote that does all the macros for me, but it would be nice if the AVR could do it instead. I used to have a Sony AVR back in the mid 90's that would do it, the front of it had a truncated pyramid sticking out that would blast out IR signals. You just had to tell it what equipment you had or program it with the original remote. Everything was on screen and the remote looked like an egg with a control stick and volume buttons. It was great until the amp section crapped out when my brother turned it off and cranked the volume all the way up instead of all the way down. Next time it powered up it was loud as hell for a few seconds and shut down never to play again. I've been looking for something with similar functionality since, but nothing seems to get it right like that model did. The harmony works well, but it relies on the user pointing at the equipment until all the IR codes go through which does not happen sometimes and the family gets frustrated and confused, lol.

That is a nice setup you have there, you did a great job on the room and picking out the décor. How is the dual bookshelf speakers working out as a center channel? I had thought of doing this at one time with a couple of Infinity studio monitors, but didn't think it would sound right and ended up just using one. That's a crazy amount of speakers you have stacked around the room!

I did a little research and quickly figured out the M32i Bookshelf units would be better timbre matched
with identical specs to their 33i,34i,35i Floor Standers with exact same size drivers and tweeters and power requirements.
Just one of them is currently wired, the other is just a spare to complete the look as a fake center speaker.

Ahh, I see, got to keep everything symmetrical. At least you got everything from the same company and timbre matched. I believe the Infinities I mentioned were bought back in 94 or 95, don't think there was a matching center channel to them. I unloaded my Infinity SM 125 floor standers to my Dad and he already had 4 matching Infinity bookshelf speakers, so we ended up using two in the back and one as a center in their theater room. I set them up with a 145 inch screen painted on the wall and $50 garage find dolby digital AVR and they were set.

You need to just put the other Velodyne sub behind the third seat, that way each seat has it's own near field sub...symmetry

So the really important question...

How long did it take you to build that Tumbler Lego set?

Looking good! I love personality added in. I have seen very few home theaters that I did not like but also very few where there was more to it than speakers, padding and chairs. It's nice to see your collection and collectibles on display.
