I'm considering buying a 7 year old 5.1 surround sound receiver from a friend. It is a Sony STR-DE545.

I am wondering if it can handle the surround sound that is used on newer DVD's. According to an Amazon page I found, http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STR-DE545.../dp/B00004VVUU
it has the following capability:

24-bit DSP for High Precision DTS, Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic Decoding.

Is this receiver still viable for the newer DVD's?

Thanks

If you mean DVDs, yes. If you mean BluRay HD discs, no.

Yes, I am talking about DVDs. I am just starting out in home theatre, I am unsure if there are newer types of encoding that are used now, or if for some other reason an older receiver is not as capable as the newer ones.

Thanks

Again, current DVDs, like all DVDs, are fine via component output and coax/optical digital audio to older AVRs like that Sony. OTOH, newer HD player (BlueRay at the moment) demand more.

You sure its only 7 years old..
Date first available at Amazon.com: September 4, 1973

My mom works for Sony, and she brought home a copy of "Starhawk BETA"
I quickly slipped it into my trusty PS3, and started playing.
