my dad just hooked up his AV system consisting of the following:

Pioneer Plasma
Sony Reciever
Sony BluRay
HD Cable Box (Comcast)

i cant provide a visual diagram, but heres what we did.

cable from wall to cable box
HDMI from Reciever to TV
HDMI from Reciever to Cable Box
HDMI from Reciever to to BluRay

visually everything works great, but we cannot get any sound? any idea? HDMI is working as the visuals are there, but no sound at all.

any suggestions?

Did you configure your inputs for HDMI audio? Make sure they're not set to optical or something else.

make sure the input on the receiver is set to "auto" so it finds the digital signal. It is possible it is set to analog and is looking for the left right

Could be bad hdmi. Switch cables and see if the problem persists.

Your receiver may be a model that only does video not audio decoding though the HDMI cable. We need to know what model you have to help you out more.

He probably has an HDMI pass through, not repeated reciever. He says optical works, and video works when switched.

I'd start with one at a time....and unplug the other.
HDMI out to TV
Bluray HDMI in to DVD in...

If this doesn't work... run an rca cable from the bluray digital out to the "dvd in coax" on the back of your receiver. This should work and sound just as good.

The receiver says it is only 1080i passthrough... I have a feeling that audio might be an issue with the hdmi. I havn't looked close enough online

According to your quick start guide

Notes:
To enjoy multi channel surround sound from the dvd player be sure to connecto the coaxial digital cord.
To enjoy multi channel surround sound when connecting HDMI, be sure to connect the digital audio jack

I think you have to connect HDMI AND the digital audio out for sure

If you use the hdmi "DVD IN" then you have to use the coaxial digital in
If you use the hdmi "Video 2/BD IN" then you have to use the optical digital in

but the problem is he can only run a single optical cable, and we have 2 devices (cable, dvd) so how do we do that?

i thought ultimately this was the purpose of HDMI, single cord, etc.?

I see 3 digital audio inputs, two optical and one coax, you should not have a problem.

HDMI cable does have the audio, your Cable box and Bluray probably output the audio over the HDMI cable. Sony in designing your entry level receiver decided not to build in the circuitry that would handle it. Your beef is with the Sony design team.

Time to think about Craig's list.
