Thanks, free! I appreciate the offer. I'm going to take a look at that product and let you know, as I'm still not inclined to even mess around with duct work. I already have much more project than I do skill/time, so the idea of choosing to expand it even further doesn't rank high on my happiness-ometer!

But I'll do some research on it! Thanks!

Todd,

I'm worried that you may have some unresolved issue with your parents. Or at least with your parent's stuff.

An Old Man's Musing on Kids Growing Older ------

Very well said. I am still serving - have spent time "over there" and can relate to your son's feelings. As a father of two boys who want to go to the Air Force Academy and West Point, I also understand your concerns. It seems like just yesterday the oldest was handing me tools under the car I was playing around on. Even though I have spent so many years serving, I have mixed emotions about them wanting to follow their dad. I have always said I do this in the hope my kids will never have to do the things I have.

Your post was one of the most moving things I have ever read from a parent's perspective - I have printed it and will re-read it from time to time to remind me of the awesome responsiblity it is to command these great young men and women who serve today. Thank you very much for posting it.

By the way - I love this thread. Equal parts information and entertainment. Your smart ass sense of humor is great. I can relate to that.

Figured my thread was already cluttered up with enough OT ramblings, but yours was far too sane and on topic.

It just goes to show you ... it's always something!!

Thank you for your service to our country, and for your kind words about that post, which frankly I almost deleted instead of posting since it was so off topic and .... well, so personal. It does my father's heart good to think it might serve in some small way someone like yourself who leads these young men and women - our sons and daughters. God bless you in your duties.

Since this is, coincidentally, Memorial Day, we will do what we do every year on Memorial Day: go to Fort Snelling National Cemetery to visit the graves of my father and grandfather - both of whom served - and to honor those heroes who died serving their country. Just being there speaks far louder and more effectively to my children's hearts than any mere words I could muster on the subject. Where once we had to make them go, now they actually look forward to it, even to the point of asking several days in advance what time we are going and how many flags and flowers we can bring to put on graves. Further reminder that kids listen much more earnestly to what we do than to what we say.

This year will be particularly moving to us, as it will be the first time in several years that our son will be with us again, having been away in the service until recently. He's even humoring his old man by agreeing to wear his uniform to the cemetery. His grandpa would be so proud. I know his grandpa's son is.

I hope you all find a way today to in some way honor those heroes who died in service to our country, and the families they left behind who share that sacrifice for their entire lives. May they remind us all once again of that eternal truth - that freedom isn't free.

Agreed. Especially when, like me, you have little of any real value to add to someone's thread, that sort of thing is about all I can do!

Fortunately for us all there are plenty of others here who know what they are doing and can actually help people, so I don't have to bear the burden of that heavy responsibility.

Recognizing that AVS Forum readers are obviously pretty clueless when it comes to AV stuff, I took it as my civic duty to explain, in simple terms, how to deal with the imminent (at last!) digital TV conversion.

Step One: take a close look at your TV set. Now, if you're luck enough to have a relatively modern set like mine ...

... you might be tempted to assume that you're automatically good to go, but that could get you into trouble, because looks can be deceiving (just ask my poor wife). So here's a handy flow chart to help the discernment process:

Crib Note Version: do nothing. Wait until after the digital conversion. If your TV still works, you're probably good to go. Probably.

Of course, if you're in my shoes you noticed right off the bat that this chart omitted a very important first question, e.g. Does your TV work? One quick way of figuring that out, I found, is if your TV looks like this:

... you might need to get a converter box to receive a TV signal after the digital conversion, not to mention before.

If you're the clueless sort and even after the above you still don't understand what to do, this video will remove all doubt.

There. That should have covered just about everything, I reckon. My job here is finished.

Hi Ho Silver -- AWAY!!

OK, further on the topic of TV, digital and otherwise.

So having no TV capable of getting digital without a converter box, and not wanting to waste even a few bucks on a converter box for that sorry excuse of a TV that is dying, and << inhale >> trying hard to not buy the PJ just yet so as not to have any more excuse than I already have to procrastinate on my HT build .... I bought an HD Homerun. It's the skinny white thing on top of one of my Sonos zoneplayers, because it connects to the network off the router.

This has two digital tuners and HD recorder capability, and is accessible to all the computers on my home network. Pretty cool. Now I can watch/pause/record HD via my computer, which frankly is about the same monitor size as my bloody TV.

I'm sure you guys haven't realized this before, being so backward with AV stuff and all, so let me be the first to let you in on a little secret: HD TV looks a LOT better than regular old TV!

Who knew?!

Although I didn't realize things had such sharp edges before, and I kind of miss the snow storm that was always present before. Where do you suppose all that snow went?!?

OK, determined to make some progress this weekend somewhere, somehow. After contemplating long and hard (while sipping a few drinks) inspiration (or inebriation?) hit, and I decided to install a DIY ceiling fan.

Amazingly, I did this all by myself, with no help. And it has a very high WAF (at least until the W sees it).

PM me for detailed instructions, but please be patient since it may take me a while to respond to the flood of requests.

Baby steps ...

Finished framing and pulling the electrical in my hang out room / son's bedroom. Will post a photo or two soon if it shows anything more than the same room with a few runs of romex.

Next up is finishing the low voltage runs (awaiting shipment from Monoprice) and adding some fiberglass batts for a bit more R value in the walls and some sound deadening in the ceiling.

It's something anyway ...

I was thinking of painting the fan and the ceiling black to match the tape instead.

Hey,

I've been reading your thread and as of last night completed the entire thread. Only fell asleep three times while doing so!

Now that you are "real time" the pressure is on to keep the work progressing so you don't loose readership. Now's the time to buckle down and get to it.

OTOH your build is rather extensive and "bigger" than most here due to your situation. I have not heard of someone rebuilding their home around a home theater but that is what you have basically done!

Now that I have "joined" your build expect some well deserved heckling!

Enough pleasantries get to WORK!!!!

100% of my speaker wire is monoprice and all of my factory terminated video cables are monoprice.

I also purchased my flat panel mount from them. Great prices and customer service.
