Building a new house and have included a 15x11x9 media room with no windows. I am having silicone sprayed into the walls and having double drywall installed.

Here is where I need help.

Since the house as usual is costing more than expected my gear budget is shrinking. as it stands right now the gear budget is around $5000. I want to spend about $1000 on an AVR, $1500-$2000 on a Projector and Screen and the rest on Speakers.

My current equipment I have is a Yamaha 5830 which is about 5 yrs old. 2 Entergy floor standing speakers that are about 20 yrs old and the Klipisch quintet center, surround and 10' bass.

Yes I need to upgrade. Please help lead me in the right direction to get the most bang for my buck.

Thank you

There is just too many ways to spend $5000 on HT equipment. You might be better off visiting each of the various forums on here and get some ideas on an AVR, Projector and speakers. I would suggest maybe looking at Internet Direct for speakers, will save you some money (ascend, av123, aperion, svs, hsu, etc.) For AVR, probably Denon, Yamaha or Onkyo will be the most popular and I don't have much knowledge regarding projectors but many others on here do.

You did not say where you lived? If you live in the Rockies or west of there, the Dop-Able Products 4 x 8' wallboard makes an incredible screen surface (see the DIY screen forum for info)

Sherwood's Newcastle surround amps offer very good bang for the bucks.

Good luck.

Here is how I would spend 5000.00. Just my .02

AVR-Denon AVR-1910 550.00
Projector-Epson Home Cinema 8100 1500.00
Screen-DIY paint 250.00
Speaker-Aperion Audio Intimus 5B Harmony SD 1800.00
Total 4100.00

This leaves say 900.00 for cables, accessories, a Blu-ray player, and some Blu-ray movies.

I love spending other peoples money!

I like RTRose's suggestions for AVR and Projector/Screen...I would (as I have) spend my money on Ascend 340's across the front, Emotiva ERD-1's for surrounds (you could also go with 170's or 200's from Ascend) and a sub from HSU (vtf 2.3) or SVS (NSD-12). Total would be around $1700...leaves you money for cables or you could upgrade the AVR to the 2310 or get yourself a certified 3808ci refurb from Dakmart.

I like your thinking on the Ascends too. Oh, and the suggestions for the subs. I was just thinking "one stop shop" for simplicity sake. Then there is the SVS speakers too. Ohhhhh so many ways to go makes the head spin. Now I know why the OP asked us. It is a hard decision to make.

Good luck!
