All:

My mother received a Western Union letter from Bob Davis of Directv,inc. 200 N Sepulveda Blvd , El Segundo, CA, today. It said:
=============================================
We have detected a software problem with certain Directv system receivers and believe yours may be affected. The problem causes the receiver to lose data in its memory. Unless you take a simple 1 time preventative measure to fix this problem your Directv programming may be interrupled.

Reset or power down ; each of your Direcet systems now to prevent loss of programming.

(It then explains how to do a reset)

After you reset your receivers you should not be affected by this software problem.
If you do not reset your receivers, you may see an on screen message:Call customer service at Ext 722, on one or more channels where you normally have programming.

We urge you to reset your receiver box immediatly so your programming will not be interrupted.

==========================================

What is with this letter? Since when does Directv care about peoples programming? Heck
they were unreachable for several months.
I did notice there was a VALID H card in the unit. Maybe that is what the concern is about. Any ideas out there?

Dennis:

Post it anywhere you like. I can scan the letter for show and tell if it is needed.

Over a year ago, DirextTV decided to re-issue new cars of the "football" type. However they descovered that some of the older boxes would not properly program with the new cars in them and we heard nothing more aobut this. however we think that that they have now loaded new software in all of the boxes that they have on record that have the older cards(most of the boxes over 18 months old). As best we can tell if you had a new card, no uploads were done. I expect to see new cards any day to replace all the old ones. At this point, all old cards will not be valid (INCLUDING "TEST CARDS") and everone will have to change. We have (as a dealer) received new showroom cards. We assume the old ones will not be valid for long as we were not to my knowledge asked to return the old H cards.
We have both Sony and RCA Digital boxes that are less than 1 year old but have H cards that do not appear to have been reprogrammed. THey do have standard cards and are connected to a valid phone line. But who really knows, maybe the Telegram was a fake. I was surprised that it went WU. Very expensive.
Now if they would just upgrade our DTV100 boxes to fix the channel problem, I could watch the shuttle land!

From some other conversation elsewhere, the described letter may be because Direct may have upset the software in the box where free local channels were on and are now being cut off. THey may have sent an improper signal to remove the 900 local channels from non suscribers. The charlotte area is not yet on Direct on direct for local wither on 101 or on 110 birds so we would have not been touched by this.

From what I understand, some of the firmware updates that were sent to some of the older boxes could cause problems with some of the channels not showing up. The letter is simply stating that if you have a problem, not to call DirectTV but to reset your box. They are just trying to avoid a rush to the call center.

I just got the same message yesterday. A Western Union message via U.S. Mail. I had an older DTC-100 and sent it in for a refurb (quieter fan, DTV logo on front). Don't know if this was aimed at the older unit or not...

I got the same letter today 02-22-00. I did what they ask for I don't know any better. It didn't change anything that I notice.
