so the onerous task of spray painting the radiator is finally done... that is a MAJOR item checked off my "irritation list"...

the next thing was the wires in the front... as noted earlier in this thread, i do not like to see wires... decided the best way to hide them was to build a soffit along the floor in the front of the room to run everything through...

started with a high quality, made in america snake... 3 runs of monoprice in-wall 12 gauge, a rca pair for the subs, and the cable for the fios and the network cable jump in halfway...

IMG_2059.JPG

if it's gonna be a snake, might as well make it look like a snake...

IMG_2062.JPG

ran it to front of room and terminated in middle of front wall...

IMG_2078.JPG

turned the outlet into a j-box...

IMG_2080.JPG

soffit in place... speakon connector for center channel...

IMG_2081.JPG

speakon for one speaker, pass-thru sub connection and locking outlet for one sub...

You've been busy!

What's with the 4 to 5 foot drop extension pole from the ceiling to the pj? Can't it be flipped upside down and mounted just a foot or so from the ceiling, shooting downward?

I must be missing something.

In A/V reproduction accuracy, there is no concept of "accounting for taste". We don't "pick" the level of bass any more than we get to pick the ending of a play. High fidelity is an unbiased, neutral, exact copy (or "reproduction") of the original source's tonal balance, timing, dynamics, etc..

yup... keeps me out of trouble...

yup, it's actually upside down already (4 foot drop pole, just a threaded steel pipe that i sprayed black, mounted to a plumbing flange)... that's a da-lite hphc screen... being retro-reflective, it "wants" the projector mounted as close to eye level as possible... thus the long drop... it was on that shelf there before, but getting it on the pole (and the rack out from behind the couch) gives me a bit more floor space to work with...

i gave it my usual "strength test" (grabbed onto it and held myself in the air) before sticking the pj on it to make sure it would hold...

Interesting that the type of screen can influence where your PJ should live. I'm at the pre-planning stage of adding a PJ and screen so I have quite a bit to learn. I'd like to do it "budget-style" as I've been hemorrhaging funds lately on this damn hobby .

i hear that...

basically, you have angular reflective screens (almost all of them) and retro-reflective screens (just a few)....

the names pretty much describe what they do... retro-reflective screens reflect the light back to where it came... so the closer you are to the lens of the projector, the more "light" you get (i.e. the brighter the picture is)...

whereas an angular reflective screen reflects light at the opposite angle of which it came in... ideally the lens would be positioned the same distance above the centerline of the screen as your eyes are below it...

depending on your circumstance, one can be "better" than the other... the da-lite retro screens give you a ton of gain IF you are sitting within the viewing cone, and being retro, are a bit better in ambient light (from the sides/ceiling anyway).... the viewing cones tend to be rather narrow though, and the gain drops rather quickly once you get close to the edge of the cone....

i'm ready and waiting to design your room for you...

cool, we have pictures again... smile.gif if anyone comes across a broken link i missed, let me know... i think i fixed them all; it was rather fun to relive the last 14 months... smile.gif

if it ever gets below 95 here in the toxic waste dumps, the next phase of the "hide the wires" project will be complete... smile.gif only thing i have left to do is paint, and that's not happening until it cools off enough to open the windows...

no link?

but of course i sing to them... and talk to them... smile.gif i can call the little black evil beast the worst names in the book, but as long as i say it in a nice voice, he still thinks i'm telling him he's wonderful... no cat has led a more pampered or spoiled life than he has... and he is STILL evil... smile.gif

the only thing that saves him from a one way trip to the shelter is that i'm the king of his world... smile.gif in that way, he's kind of like a dog... when he hears my car pull into the driveway, he runs and jumps up in the window and meows... lol...

Weird-link works fine for me. More quirks with the new site I guess. I'm a big animal guy as well, and my dog likes everything HT except the Audyssey chirps smile.gif. Anyway, here's the link again the "old fashioned" way:

updates... smile.gif

my poor old sofa was fixing to fall apart and do serious injury to me, so i finally got theater seats... talked to roman, and they were here in 3 days... i highly recommend him, his service is great and he responds virtually 24 hours a day...

i'm REALLY glad i got these... they are the fusion escapes... very comfortable, and the electric headrests alone are worth the price of admission... taken as whole, they were relatively inexpensive (625 each) compared to "regular furniture", considering the toys that come with them...

pics...

after i made myself safe from attacking furniture, i then FINALLY solved my projector shaking issue... whether i mounted it to the ceiling, wall or shelf, i could not stop it from shaking... it's an old house (1903), and even "heavy steps" were causing shaking, let alone what happened when the subm fires...

after kicking around a lot of different ideas, i came up with the idea to build an isolation pad with sorbothane feet...

the feet...

took an old 1" thick piece of cherry i had lying around from an old stand i had built and painted it black (of course)...

drilled holes in the corners...

installed the feet...

on floor in back of room...

repurposed a lingerie chest to use as a stand and storage area...

and virtually no more shake... smile.gif i may yet build a small platform for the pj itself on top of the chest to eliminate the last of it....

if you do use this solution, it is VERY important to get the weight right... i had to stuff a couple bricks in one of the bottom drawers in order to get enough mass for the sorbothane to get into it's "happy zone"...

now, of course, the "home theater - the second revision" project has started... redface.gif need to stash some cash for that though...

Glad it all seems to be working out, but I thought to add something if there were still issues: In addition to the pj shaking from sub rumble, you also need to be sure it isn't the screen vibrating that's causing visual anomolies. [Or YOU for that matter. smile.gif ]

yea, the screen (and i, ftm) are still going to move when the sub fires hard... i can deal with that (since i'm not sure how to stop the screen itself from moving)...

it's at a "more than acceptable" spot in terms of that right now... at least until i get my front porch remodeling done (hopefully within the next 2 weeks, i am SO tired of sanding)... they i may play a bit more....

like i said, i'm gonna redo the whole shebang to see how close i can get to a "dedicated" room... i'll never have a true home theater in here (i have zero chance of soundproofing this room), but i want to get as close as possible... the minimalist in me is winning the battle at this point...

especially since i got the HDbaseT solution up and running... i was able to get a majority of the equipment out of the room and in the rack in my wife's kingdom... win/win... i don't have to look at it, and she likes looking at all that stuff... smile.gif

I have the same fusion seats from Roman, I am still loving mine, other than it would have been nice to have a switch to turn off the blue and red LED lights.
