Hi all from a long time lurker ,

I am installing Energy RC-6C (6" driver, 8-1/8" cutout) speakers for my side and rear surround channels. The speakers will be ceiling mounted. The ceiling is 2x10" joists with Whisper Clips, drywall furring channel, and 1 sheet of 5/8" drywall.

Question: Does anyone have a link or any advice for how to construct a suitable back box for in ceiling speakers with the above ceiling construction? Mainly I am just looking for an example or two before I start construction in order to avoid any costly mistakes (short on time right now ).

I plan on building with 3/4" particle board and then mounting each speaker box to the joists with 2 RSIC-DC04 clips for isolation. This is also how my can light back boxes are constructed/installed.

My two biggest goals are isolation from upstairs sound/footfalls and also to avoid turning the suspended drywall into a giant resonating panel from surround channel content.

ps I called Energy and was advised to build 1.0 cu. ft. boxes.

Thanks for the help!

Kent

soundproofingcompany.com offers some instructions on backer box construction

http://www.soundproofingcompany.com/...llation_guide/

It's for lights, but similar construction for in-ceiling speakers.

That website is a FANTASTIC resource, for info and products.

Thanks for all your help, Ted.

I agree; that is a fantastic resource.

I actually bought my can light back boxes from soundisolationstore, as I had no time to build 18 back boxes (14 lights, 4 speakers):

They have great installation instructions too:

You'll see why I had to do something more complicated than a simple box once I show you my joist/drywall furring channel layout.
