I plan on using my laptop for a media PC. I want to run the audio/video from my laptops HDMI port to my TV and then have it play through a 5.1 surround sound system (which I have not bought yet)

Is this possible? Will the audio go out through my TV and play through my surround sound? Is it just a matter of going into the TV menu and telling it to output the sound through w/e port it's plugged in to?

I would think you would connect your PC to your AVR via HDMI and your AVR would then connect to the TV via HDMI (via the AVRs HDMI out) - the picture flows through the AVR.

Does your TV have optical audio out? This would accomplish what you're asking.

But are you buying a HTIB or a new receiver? You could always run the HDMI into the receiver, and then receiver to the TV

I do exactly this and it works great...
I run HDMI from my PC to the receiver, then another hdmi to a projector, I get full 7.1 sounds + 1080p display from the PC
