Does his PC have HDMI out on it?

If so he could connect his PC to the receiver via HDMI, then use Component cables (the ones that are green, red, and blue with white and red audio) to connect the receiver to the projector.

Or if looks like he could possibly do VGA out to the projector, and if his PC can output sound via optical he can connect the PC to the receiver via optical cable for sound only.

Well, no you can't do that... HDMI sources will not output via Component from an AVR.

But the projector has DVI in, so an HDMI-to-DVI cable would allow HDMI source if they are not using HDCP copy protection. (I doubt the projector has HDCP built-in) So that will work fine for connecting the PC, but if he has other HDMI devices (DVD/BD player, etc) I don't think that'll work...

HDMI to DVI cable from PC to Projector: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231 (As Jautor correctly pointed out this will NOT pass copy-protected content)

Toslink (fiber optic) cable from PC to Receiver: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229

If computer lacks toslink output then USB to SPDIF converter gizmo: http://www.turtlebeach.com/product-detail/sound-cards-accessories/micro-ii/31

Or if surround sound isn't important use a headphone to RCA cable (stereo sound only): http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2
