Rather than mixing speakers, especially across the front soundstage, why not get 3 of the same speaker for better consistency as sounds move from left to right. Three of these Fluance bookshelf speakers would be a good replacement for your soundbar.

So, what's the question?

You want to replace your LCR sound bar, but don't want to? More details on the sound bar may help.

A different manufacturer for the rears isn't a problem.

I'm sorry for the confusion . My sound bar was built by a friend who is a sound engineer. That was before he got injured in iraq .I thought i might be able to use it as my center channel only and 4 more speakers to it. If i can't really do that than i will keep the LCR and just replace my surrounds as they scratch sometimes when playing movies. I hope that this clears some things up.

I understand the importance to you, of keeping the sound bar.

Is this custom sound bar fed by 2 or 3 channels from the amp/AVR?

What processor or AVR are you using? Has audio calibration been done?

Exactly what all kind of hookups does the soundbar have? Is it just strictly + and - ?
What model is the Sony AVR?
What model is the Sony TV?
What is your budget?

No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!

Do you know if all 3 speakers within the sound bar are the same?

If the answer is yes, I think you could wire the 3 sound bar speakers together to act as a single center, and use other speakers for fronts.

One would usually wire 3 speakers in a combination of series and parallel, to keep the impedance near the optimum level. The wiring would look like this:

Speaker #3 in that diagram would be the 'center' speaker, of the sound bar.

Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Another option would be to just use the center channel of the sound bar, and leave the other 2 speakers unused.

Would be nice to see a 'spec sheet,' on that custom sound bar.

Yes they are all the same ,and that is what i would like to do as it would give me i think a broader dialogue and action sound stage if that makes any sense. But since i can't make matching set for the other 4 speakers not sure if i can ever get it right.

Find a store with a selection of speakers and a good listening room, and see if they'll let you bring in the custom LCR to test with. You'll definitely want to attempt to timbre match the L/R speakers to it - the surrounds will be less important, but figuring out the mains will likely lead you to that answer - the dealer can help with that, too...

You need an experienced ear to help with the speaker decision. In my opinion, it's worth the added cost to buy in a dealer showroom, compared with online. Pick a budget, and decide how much money it's worth to you to get your new fronts timbre matched to the sound bar.

Drive to Jacksonville.

Call Southern Cinema Design, in St. Augustine, to find out if they have a showroom yet (coming soon) (by appt only).

Be careful who you trust - you need someone with a good ear, and not just a salesman.

Digital Sound & Satellite may be another option, for a demo room.
