This is my preferred design for the media room. The two half columns on either side of the screen. Some wood work above and below the screen. I had previously thought about enclosing the speakers and sub behind the panels outside of the two columns. However, to avoid acoustic issues that would arise by enclosing the speakers, I've decided to leave them in the open.

However, I wonder whether the design will look good if I remove the wood panels on either ends which were suppose to hide the speakers and have open drywall. Or should I leave the wood panels and inset some acoustic panels like pictured below.
