Okay, so we are moving into a house that will be prewired for in-ceiling speakers. We are hardcore space limited so this is about all we can do.

The TV viewing is about a 10 x 10 box.

I bought 5x Polk MC60's, and a Polk 125w sub. I'm planning to buy an Onkyo TX NR626 to power them.

Is there any way to make the sound seem decent?

I plugged one of the MC60's into my current system and it sounded ugly. Then again, it was sitting on the floor and not in a wall/ceiling for an enclosure of any sort.

I'm just worried that my limited space and limited budget are going to be hardcore crappy.

We aren't extreme audiophiles, but we like good surround sound on movies and I love live concert Blurays and streaming my music.

All advice is desired and appreciated barring it isn't like you're totally SOL or anything. smile.gif

There isn't much you can do with an $80 in- ceiling speaker. If you had a hard budget of 5 x $80 - $90/speaker. You may want to consider downgrading your surrounds since they're for ambient sound. You can then dedicate more toward your fronts. However, it was good to see that you purchased directional tweeter speakers. You can also add back boxes in the ceiling, but that would require construction before the ceiling goes in.

You can always upgrade the speakers later when budget allows as well

Okay. At what price point, specs, etc., are in-ceiling speakers viable?

I could exchange the 3 L/C/R variants if the price isn't too much more.

I saved some money by going Onkyo TX NR626 instead of 727 as well as taking a deal on the sub. I didn't save a whole lot, but might be able to redirect.

Are we talking something like this: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107MC80/Polk-Audio-MC80.html or http://www.crutchfield.com/p_10750RT/Polk-Audio-50-RT.html?cc=07 ?

Sorry, I'm quite ignorant at what to look for.

That's a loaded question - a budget is a budget (sorry - I'm in finance). I'm not saying purchase outside of your comfort zone or means, but make a long-term plan. You had said that you fired one of the speakers up with it sitting on the floor - anything you do now with that speaker should be an improvement. However, you may want to search for in- ceiling speakers that are fully enclosed. I'll see if I can send some examples, but they are more expensive and may be an option for you in the future.

Sorry for the loaded question.

Let's put it this way, I don't want to go past $200 per speaker if possible in the future.

At this time, I could return 3 of these and upgrade the $90 speakers to ones that are $150 and be okay.

Thanks - your budget update helps. You may want to check out Speakercraft AIM5 in-ceiling speaker - it pivots as well and they have a pretty good reputation for the price point. They run around 160 ea on Amazon. The AIM7 may be a better choice for output, but runs around 200

Okay, so I connected all five speakers and new sub to my old AVR at the same time and re-calibrated it. The sound wasn't too bad. I'm thinking that the distorted sound is because the speakers are outside of any enclosure and sitting on the floor or other speakers. Maybe they'll be okay.

The only major disappointment was 2 channel old TV shows like an old Southpark episode I recorded a video of it playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj-eFTs3Dgk

The others sounded okay, but not great.

Here's some other video:
Korn 320kbps playing via Chromecast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2XP5F0zJEo
Harry Potter 1 - DTS : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w7iKq_YT6g
Harry Potter 2: - DTS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pi8yF1FQ5k
Southpark - stereo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj-eFTs3Dgk

Any thoughts out there?

any speaker is going to sound completely different mounted on a baffle of some sort to separate the sound generated from the front of the driver away from that coming off the back. You're not giving your Polks a fair chance if they aren't installed in the manner intended.

underachiever extraordinaire

Roger that. I'm trying to ensure I didn't totally screw up. Unfortunately, our move in date is now going to be a week past the last date to return for an exchange or refund.
