Media Cabinet too small for tv

Hi. We just moved into a house in which the media cabinet is too small for our tv. We have a 40" Sony which weighs 58 pounds. The cabinet maxes out at about 36 inches in width and is 25" deep. Also the studs in this location are odd. There are 2 studs within 2" of each other toward the left side and another stud located 26" away at the far right side. My plan is to install a long arm tv mount but the stud locations are not ideal for this and I don't have a lot of wiggle room. I did see one mount that fit the bill almost as it slid horizontally which would have been great but the studs are just too far apart to mount this.

I was thinking of just buying a thick piece of wood and mounting it horizontally and bolting it into the two studs 26" apart and then mounting the TV arm on the center of the new piece of wood. Would this be a safe option or would there be too much weight in the center of the wood which wouldn't be directly attached to the wall behind it by a stud? Any help on this would be appreciated. Thank you.

Mount some solid ply to the studs and then mount the TV to the ply. I have done the same thing before.
