Help and adice: Upgrading 7.1 to Atmos in a family room HT?

Hi,

I've recently purchased a house and it came with a 'home theater' that was installed about 8 years ago. It's a 7.1 system that I want to upgrade to the latest spec. The real issues I have is that the placement of the in-ceiling speakers which are not ideal, especially for 2-channel audio (see photos). They were probably OK back in 2009 for Dolby surround but from what I understand Atmos now requires speakers to be at ear level except of course for the 2 or 4 height speakers. The current set-up consists of six EPISODE A6-IW6 in ceiling speakers, and one EPISODE A6-CLRIW6 in wall center speaker.

My plan is to abandon the front L & R in ceiling speakers and then do a 5.1.2 system by:

  • adding L & R tower speakers (probably Golden Ear Triton 1's or similar).
  • use the 2 existing in-ceiling speakers which are directly above the sectional (they fire down) as my height channels
  • use the two L&R rear speakers (which are in the angled portion of the ceiling) as my rears
  • keep the current center channel
  • TV will be upgraded as well (probably 65" OLED)
This will all be powered by an Anthem MRX 720 AV receiver. I will also add a sub (brand and model TBD) My priority is 2 channel music and streaming video (movies, Netflix, etc.)

Thoughts? Advice?

Your proposed in-ceiling rear surrounds are so close to the in-ceiling height speakers that you'll be hard pressed to hear any separation between them, which will defeat the point of Atmos (sounds around you vs sounds above you). Since you are going to have front speakers closer to ear height, you should do the same with your surrounds (in-wall or on-wall, mounted in the back corners of the room).
