I have a room that measures 10ft 8 in wide and 12 ft 6 in long that I will be converting to a theater and I need assistance with layout and components. One of my friends used this forum to build a similar theater and I would like to use the BenQ 8700+ projector as he has installed. Additionally, I will purchase a 103 in. VuTek screen. Any recommendations on layout, audio and seating would be greatly appreciated. I want to seat 4-5 viewers.
Fitting 4-5 with optimal viewing seats in your room will be tough. You'll have to decide on your seating options. The Berkline dedicated home theater seats are great but you'll only be able to fit three of them. You may want to consider a sectional. The problem is to fit more than three you'll need two rows, and that will put people six to seven feet from an eight foot wide screen, which will be too close for most. Will your equipment be inside the room too? I built out my 13x17 room to seat six, but with only four good seats. I could have only had three seats with the berklines and went instead with a berkline reclining couch/loveseat/chair set. Five of my six seats recline. I laid them out in a traditional living room arrangement with the chair angle to the screen. They are not large pieces and still they barely fit in my room. For extra seating, I have three matching video game type bean bag chairs from target that I can bring up and put on the floor for my young kids if need be. Figure you need 2 1/2 to 3 feet of width minimum per seat. You could do a rear row of three on a riser, and a front row of two, but again, the front row will be too close for most people over the age of about 15. I'd suggest a sectional with a few ottamans. This isn't what most home theater purists would pick, and it won't look like a theater does, but it offers lots of seating for the dollar as well as for the square foot...a twelve foot sectional (I just measured the one in my family room) should allow you to fit five along your 12' wall. Be sure you have adequate ventilation, too as the room will also get very hot and stuffy, which is something that most people don't think about. Youve got five bodies, a projector, and electronic components in a small space. Enjoy the process and keep us posted!
