Joe,

I went with an oil based stain (NOT the Gel stain) from Rockler's.
It's made by General Finishes. The majority of my trim is pine, with some oak >> the outcome was very similair in shade for both types of wood.

see this link, except the color is mahogony

So; this week was small stuff, not much worth photographing:

Stained some misc trim odds/ends.

For the Wet Bar room:
Stripped, sanded and re-stained my in-wall dart board case, to better match my trim. Also; prepped this room so that I can finish painting (the Spanish Tile color will stay - for now).

For this weekend, I hope to:
Finish sealing (wipe-on poly) the dart cabinet and misc items
Paint the Wet bar room (and stairwell?)
Install the 1x10 stained trim on both sides of the stairs.

And if I'm really productive
Final painting of the bathroom
and begin poly top coating the wainscoting in the Billiard room

We'll see.......at least I can dream - goals are good -right?

**And the result, what I actually got done

Finish sealing (wipe-on poly) the dart cabinet and misc items ** Done

Paint the Wet bar room (and stairwell?) ** Wet bar room is done (stairwell is not)

Install the 1x10 stained trim on both sides of the stairs ** Done, also cut some
additional 1 x10 trim for the other stairwell areas, and base mold for the landing

Joe,

Still have not shopped for carpet - I have been putting off that dreadful process.

Actually I have been spending several hours every night in the basement - just a lot of small stuff that does not photograph well, like:.

spackling repairs in my stairwell
adding additional coats of wipe-on poly to random trim
stripping and re-staining my in-wall dart cabinet
The bigger tasks that are photoworthy I hope to finish this weekend >> painting the stairwell, the bathroom, and the 2nd coat for the bar area.

New photos will show up within a week, I promise >> even if it is a very small woodpile for Hanes...

I'm with you on the photo thing. I'm doing some of the odds and ends stuff, while completely necessary and very time consuming is not photo worthy.

Regarding carpet. Stop stressing, take a deep breath and think positive thoughts. You CAN get through this. YES you CAN! Time to suck it up and go carpet shopping man. Don't shake your head at me, you can, yes you can get through this. I'll be here to help you along.

Hanes / RT;

So in one photo Hanes is "kissing me off", and in the next message you are there for me in my time of carpet shopping need.

Hmm - I think I need to go execute another woodpile.

Lets just keep this straight. Hanes is is offering or suggesting lip contact. I'm just giving you encouragement regarding you carpet shopping phobia. Mine comes with "no strings or lips attached" just moral support.

Hanes on the other hand is offering motivation of other sorts. I'd steer clear of those lips, hard telling where they have been after looking at his "kin's" photos in his thread.

Does this burst of energy include carpet shopping? Sorry I couldn't resist!

These last few days working on the finishing touches has been fun but somewhat excruciating too. I know now why people say not to hang your projector before the end of the build. I have been busy with the little things like switch covers, inserts for my can lights, making my video cables, and other odds and ends stuff all the while having my kids media room set up for TV watching. The thing is I want to get it done, but the other part of me "just wants to take a break" and all the finishing stuff can wait. Good thing my wife is an excellent motivator and is reminding me that it is the small finishing stuff that makes the room complete.

My philosophy? Who needs outlet covers and switch plates oh and can light inserts (who looks up into them anyway) when there are goodies, gadgets to play with, and movies to watch?

Hope your holiday weekend is enjoyable and productive.

RTROSE

OK - hope this update finds everyone had a great Labor Day weekend..?
I actually got about another 20 hours working down in the "hole" (as my wife calls it). This time I took photos, I know way overdue...

Started the weekend by getting the 2nd coat of Spanish Tile painted in the pub room. Started to paint the entire stairwell this color, but changed my mind as it would have been too dark. Therefore only one wall of the stair well will be this color. This color is still growing on me, but have decided to keep it (for now). Also got the first coat of paint in the bathroom - just visible to the right in the photo below.

The next photo is for Hanes:
Check out the display in this photo - how's that for cutting edge AV Nirvania?
The treadmill will vacate this space and will move to our recently vacated 4th bedroom (now that my 24 year old has moved out). So this room will become a pub room.

Every pub needs a dart board. First I had to refinish my old dart cabinet as it was originally finished in a Golden Oak. I did manage to get it installed and trimmed out.

Next Post will show the time consuming trim (and paint) project for the stairwell - stay tuned

Some of the before photos were taken when we thought the entire stairwell would be painted Spanish Tile - Way too dark, only the large wall will be painted this color, the rest of the stairwell will be a much lighter color - white for now. NOTE: So far only one coat of paint, final coat and the railing will happen after the carpet is in, and the furniture & pool table have been moved downstairs.

I needed to get the "rails" on the sides of the stair treads installed, the lower run was easy as their was a ~1.25" gap on each side. After some cautious angle cuts on both ends I dropped in some ~9 ' lengths of 1"x10"s on each side. The run on the right side has been taped in preparation for painting that wall to match the pub room

Next up was to fabricate "rails" to fit the treads above the landing. This was necessary because the treads extended to the drywall on each side

Spent several hours making a pattern, and then likely broke all available table saw safety guidelines, (and a jigsaw). Made two of these:

And the result, from below:

And above:

This weeks plan:
1) Final coat of paint in the bathroom (if it needs it)
2) Move over to the Billiard room, stain touch ups to trim (nail holes), and apply multiple coats of wipe-on poly to the Wainscotting and HT room trim
3) Paint the Eq closet

That All for now!

And Hanes; sorry I forgot the photo but I am maintaining a very small token wood pile - will supply photographic evidence in my next post...

Joe,

Interesting that you should mention that - I like the way your dad was thinking, I will be making a cork covered/plywood "surround" for that purpose, especially for the "Holiday invasion" of our younger nephews and nieces Probably something that is easily removed when darts are not in use

I really liked what you did with the stairwell. Looks sharp. I had planned on doing something similar to what you did, but time and expense caught up with me so I just left it plain. I bet it did take quite a while to draw up a template for your cuts. Very time consuming, but the results I see here were worth the time invested. Nice work.

I also think it an excellent idea to surround your dart board with some type of material that is "dart friendly" especially if you do have younger dart throwers that show up time to time. In fact I have a couple of younger nephews that the SAFEST place would be IN FRONT of the board while they played. 8-)

Regarding your "spanish tile" color in the basement. I really like the color. I know you stated it is still growing on you but from the pics here it is a very warm and rich color. I do find sometimes that the more I deviate from the "safe" neutral colors the more I tend to at first feel a little uneasy about the choice, but then I tend to end up really liking it.

Now what about that carpet????????

RT,

Thanks for the encouraging word - especially on the Spanish Tile paint.

Too funny about the young dart players. Still working on some ideas for a "wall guard" that can be quickly set up (or hung), and quickly stored as needed.

As for those dare-devil table saw cuts on the stair runners - I briefly recalled those high school shop classes (and school nurse visits).

Yeah - I need to find the time to do that "CARPET THING" yikes!

No work last night, although I did go down to check the bathroom paint job:

Looks like I need to 2nd coat the bathroom walls

My son vacuumed down all the trim and wainscoting :-) At least now it will be easier fpr me to start the poly finish coats!

No photo-worthy updates, however the last few nites:

Started cleaning up the Eq closet - joint compound and prepping for paint - hoping to have the equipment (and PJ) reinstalled and running by the time we have company next weekend.

Touched up bathroom walls for final coat of paint

Spent one night in the Billiard room with an artist brush and stain - touched up nail holes and detailing the trim and wainscoting. Tonight I will apply the first coat of Poly.

This weekend will be a reduced schedule - Saturday is consumed by a noon wedding and an evening reception; Sunday could be Slooow :-)

Wishing all a productive and enjoyable weekend!

I too am at the stage where my time is taken up by all the little finishing touches and details that just seem to gobble time up without end.

Sounds like your Sunday is shaping up to the "the day" in the basement to get things done. I have a pretty light weekend schedule as far as other commitments but there are a lot of honey do's that were laid out for me this weekend since the wife is off working this weekend paying for my habit.

I did purchase the necessary materials for my stair hand rail and will be sanding and prepping that for stain. I also am working on my final set up for the kids area. Received the wall mount from monoprice and got the TV hung and now working on getting the wires hidden and speakers mounted.

I am also noodling through a DIY solution to the hiding wires that will also serve as a center speaker mount with some of the left over wood from the stairs so I'm curious to see how that all works out.

Have a great weekend!

Despite losing Saturday to a wedding, and 1/2 day Sunday (was overserved)

I did getthe following accomplished: spent Friday night getting my first coat of poly on the wainscoting in the Billiard room, Sunday: a second coat of poly, final coat of paint in the bathroom, and Eq closet prepped for painting.

The Billiard room photos:
The dark photos make it a bit hard to see, but the first 2 coats of poly are really bringing out the depth and grain in the wood. I'm very happy with how that is going

I am using a satin level of sheen - I wouldn't want it any glossier (although the flash in the photo below is a worst case)

A question for the photo below, Should I paint the interior of this book case a darker color, or leave it as is?

And the "almost finished" bathroom photos, need to give the tile a deep cleaning, and remount the mirror and accessories

Eq closet ready for paint, followed by equipment and dressing out the wiring

This weeks Plan:
Monday Night - steel wool all the wainscotting for a final poly coat, and vacuum and wipe down this area

Tuesday - Final Poly coat and misc woodwork touch-ups througout the rest of the basement

Wednesday - Paint the Eq closet, and repaint the flat black ceiling surround the theater room

Thursday - hang projector and reinstall/setup some equipment

Friday - Entertain some out-of-town company (and a rough preview of basement over beers, and a blu-ray !!
