Always something to do........When I was making my final push to get the kids area done I would make a "To Do" list. I would then happily cross one item off only to look around and then add one or two items to the bottom of the list.

I like the idea of the faux finish, however having been involved with them before they do consume a lot of time. Usually well worth it after the fact, but during the painstaking time consuming process I am usually kicking myself.

I decided against Faux for my theater... for a variety of reasons time-line among them.

This may well be my weakest photo update yet!

So the little lady tells me the crawlspace HAS to be cleaned out, vacumed, and wiped down before the basement gets carpeted.

So first up; was to throw out and organize a ton of stuff. With that done it was time to replace those low hanging porcelain light fixtures with something brighter and less prone to breakage.

Before Photos:

And After:

And for the balance of the weekend:
Halloween, yardwork, and a 2nd coat of paint in the stairwell.

As for the recent posts:
Yep; still pursuing a faux finish to tame down that "Spanish Tile" paint job in the starwell and pub room.

Carpet Countdown = 9 days to go

So "spend-itis" and "Craigs List" got the best of me (again).
I've been shopping the C-List for pool tables for the past 2 weeks.

The good News:
Last night I scored this one, a 7 footer in great shape.

The "Bad" news:
I need to drive about 90 miles round trip to retrieve the remaining portions of it before Sunday (I left a deposit and took the bumpers and leather cups with me)

Task for today and tonight:
Off to HD at lunchtime to pick up some Faux paint samples, and then experiment on my test board tonight...

Carpet Countdown = 8 days

Nice pick up on the table, I've been watching CL for a shuffleboard table. However, I may just buy a new one so I can have it delivered. Man those things are heavy and I have to carry it downhill to get it to the back yard.

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks for the pool table acknowledgements.

As for the Faux finish experiment:

So yesterday at lunch I go to HD and buy some faux finish supplies (glaze, rag roller, etc, etc..)

The plan for last night was to mix up a couple of glaze "accent ideas" to try out on my test board. The ultimate goal was to tame down that Spanish Tile paint job in the pub room, and "tie" the color scheme into the paint used in the adjoining rooms. Based on some Faux finish sample chips - it looked like i could accomplish this with a leather look accent color (if that made any sense).

I am happy to report the following:

Both of my test faux finishes resulted in the possibility of two new paint names. If I were to have continued I would be able to substitute new names for my "Spansih Tile" paint job, either:

1) Dung in the Desert

-or-

2) Desert Diarreah

Conclusion;
I stopped with an abstract art test board, cleaned up, mixed a strong drink and decided I like this nice simple Spanish Tile paint job. And then the wife says >> "Nothing Ventured - Nothing Gained, Live and Learn, Only a fool is satisfied, Etc, etc...

So I then burnt the faux finish samples in my fireplace, and mixed a 2nd drink.

All is now well !!

I wonder if those color names are trademarked? If not, you've got a winner on your hands (well, hopefully not literally).

Good point "B"!

For today's lunch I go to HD and buy a newell post and some railing hardware for my stairwell. I would like to get the size and exact position of the Newell post located before the carpet installers arrive.

Sorry to hear that your faux finishes went in the crapper. Sorry couldn't resist. When my wife and I were going through all of our paint selection woes, she then finally said it is only paint so if we don't like it we can just paint over it. It is good to hear that you found out that it wasn't going to work for you before you spent time doing all of that faux finishing. Besides now you will have extra time to break in that pool table!

Amen. Also another example of why it is good to paint on a test board FIRST. Saved me!

Well that is a very good question. Short story.......Finances. If that satisfies you, you can skip the rest of this other drivel. If you want the long story read on.

I have to let my finances recover from all of my kids media room purchases plus there have been a couple of unrelated household expenditures that were not really budgeted for, but not elaborated on in my thread due to not being related to the theater other than the sucking sound it made on the household pocketbook PLUS the NEW project my wife wants to do (as a result of the simple handrail we did) that has further siphoned funds from the HT. There are a multitude of things I NEED to do that don't require a lot of $$$$$ to do so that is where my focus will be. Unfortunately most of those items are not post or photo worthy, however if they are the only things I'm doing I may have to post or comment just to keep my thread from disappearing!

Sorry for the long and useless ramble, but I feel better anyway. Thanks!

I'm with you too. 6-14-07 is when I started my build thread. Hard to believe I have been at it off and on for that long. My budget was blown when the wife wanted the kids area done by Christmas this year! Gasp! Up until this spousal imposed deadline I was satisfied by making the basement disappear simply by closing the basement door and not having any "Hard" deadlines. I must give her credit though, if she had not thrown down the gauntlet I would not be enjoying the kids area (which I have unofficially dubbed my temporary theater) and still be working on the basement.

In doing it this way as stated before shot my budget way out of whack. Although knowing that the actual dedicated theater was going to be placed on "injured reserve" like Bob Sanders (nuther story, nuther time, Go Colts! 8-0!!) I went a little higher on my budget for the kids area. Of course like you I have undertaken the whole basement and not just a theater build so there is an added expense along with that too. I'm just glad I did not put in a bathroom as that would have also added stress to the already thin budget. It will all work out and I am very pleased with the kids area and the other parts of the basement will come along, just at a slower pace. That's OK though because when I talk equipment purchases for the actual HT with the financial committee I will enter aggressive negotiations for what I want. I figure if I have to wait then I should be fairly compensated! 8-)

RTROSE

Update >> forgot to take photos.

So my carpet preparations had me doing some more cleaning. While in the crawl space I found a surprise: Found two hairline cracks that had been weeping during our record wet October.

So; part of the weekend found me with; a wire brush, some concrete etch, hydraulic cement, and two coats of dry lock sealer. This never threatened the basement living space, however it needed addressing, and all is now well.

Also managed to get the following done:
- Put the 3rd and final coat of poly on all trim.
- secured / squeak-proofed the stair treads with screws.
- Pull the old carpet from my sons bedroom

Next Up:
Put the crawl space back together
final paint touch-ups
Clear the basement rooms and a final cleaning

Carpet countdown is now less than 2 days - Whoo Hoo!

Queen,
Patience is a virtue - stay tuned!

Just called the carpet store; they are pre-cutting at the warehouse now, "Alfonso" will be at my home ~9AM tomorrow.

I'm off tomorrow, but tonight I have a few tasks:

- Charge the camera batteries
- final vacuuming and sweep-down
- Just a bit more paint touch up work
- Then a good night's sleep (yeah right - for me this will be like Christmas eve when I was young)

Like the title says; at last >> We Have Carpet!!!
Thanks to RT Rose for the encouragement to "just git er done".

So the 2 man crew shows up promptly at 9AM, and they finish cleaning up at 4PM. In addition to the basement they also carpeted a bedroom. Hard working crew and very detail oriented - couldn't be happier.

So a few photos - Despite using flash and turning up the room lights - I am still ending up with dark shots? Oh well darker is usually better for our hobby. Time to get a new camera.

So the first photos show off that much maligned Sunset tile paint in the stairwell and "pubroom".

As you can see; I have one last significant project to complete. To install a Newell post, ballister, & railing system. I am thinking of going with a dark stained box newell, and wrought iron ballisters for the lower portion of the stair-well.

Door on the right goes to my shop, the door on the left to the bathroom

And who needs a new flat panel display when you can go retro, any older and this baby would have a crank on it. And; the next "Craigs List" pursuit will be to replace these '70s style "Captain's" bar stools!

So make a U-turn back past the stairs and into the theater room. Again sorry about the dark exposures

My 2nd SVS cylinder sub is behind the curtain on the right

Same view but I am standing where the pool table will sit

The following are taken from the center of the theater room
looking over into the center of the Billiard room:

To the West end of the Billiard room, towards the drink ledge

Back of the Theater room. Glad I went with smoked glass for the Eq "rack". You can't tell that everything was turned on and lit-up

And from the pool table position looking East in the Billiard room, that door is for the crawl space.

And the CMA winner is:

Tonight I hope to move the Berklines into the room, and get the pool table placed. And after that in the following order:

- I need to shave the bottom of two doors for carpet clearance.
- I have sacrificed a spare curtain panel, cut it into narrower panels that will be draped horizontally as a valance above the screen
- Reinstall remaining wall outlets in Billiard and theater rooms (removed most of these when I was doing wainscoting)
- Railing system
- And then pursue my back row seating; I have a row of antique theater seats I may restore and install on a riser..??
