Hanes,
I'm still around. After finishing my brother's Hawkeye man-cave this spring - I've been taking it easy. Well almost; I just started a pair of DIY speakers.
Do I understand you have had a wedding in your family????

Yea, verily!

Eldest son, and heir to the Throne, has a mid September wedding. I have been throughout the Kingdom spreading the word of the forthcoming Nuptials, and it's clear there will be much rejoicing and merry making by all subjects of the Realm!

Congratulations !!

And I'm also thinking no shortage of college diversions for your family?
So we marked our first year as empty-nesters, while our youngest made us proud attending "Moo U" in Ames.

As for our oldest; rumors of an engagement are ramping up!

And here is the Before/After sweeps. Take a look at the 150Hz area in the red circle:

Black = original setup w/o MBMs, the severe dip at 150Hz is interference reflection (mains being to close to the sidewalls)
Blue = MBMs only (low pass filtered, below 200Hz)
Green = combined response with MBM fix applied,

These were made before applying Audyseey EQ.
I will share another final sweep with Audyssey EQ applied in the near ("I promise") future .

Sweet! New additions to the speaker group.

I'm curious to see when you get everything dialed in what your impressions are. How do you power the MBM's? I'm guessing you have a separate amp for it. If I remember correctly don't you have some type of bass management in place for your multiple SVS's? Is it integrated into that somehow? Inquiring minds want to know.

RTROSE

RT,

Thanks for checking back in. The biggest difference is that dialogue in movies has improved, especially male voices in quieter passages. I have gone back to some old movies where the passages were hard to hear, and indeed this has now been improved.

My setup is now as follows:

I have a Denon 4311.
The front two SVS cylinders are at near equal distances from the MLP, and are driven by SW channel #1 . The 3rd SVS is by itself in the back of the room and is on SW channel #2 . Aside from fine tuning the phase controls (using REW) between the front 2 subs; The Audyssey XT 32 does a nice job equalizing these two SW channels.

I am using the Denon 4311 pre-outs to drive the 5 front speakers (L-main, L-MBM, Center, R-MBM, R-main) thru a Marantz 5-channel amp. For the MBMs; I added some 200Hz filters in-between the Denon pre-outs and Marantz inputs. So this "tunes" the MBMs so that they are only outputting frequencies from about 200~250 Hz down to their natural cut-off around 60 Hz. Connected in this way; Audyessey adjusts the Mains and their corresponding MBMs as a single left-channel and a single right-channel. Hope that made sense?

The Denon's built-in amps are only being used for the side and rear surrounds.

Hope all is going well for you and your family (and college)?
We are headed off to see our son this weekend for Iowa State's home-coming, so far he's doing very well

Take Care.
Craig

Craig,

Yes that makes sense. I just did not know if you were running any type of special equipment for the MBM's. Looks like they fit right in aesthetically as well so that is a bonus.

As for the college front, my son is doing well. His last semester of his Freshman year was a huge struggle for him and he did not do as well as he could have. Lesson learned and he has a better attitude and work ethic this year and has a different mindset I think. He had some adjustments last year as well. In high school he was one of the smarter kids, at Purdue everyone pretty much is as smart as he is or smarter so that was a major wake up call for him. I am very pleased and proud of the man he is growing up to be. Still lots of life lessons to be learned but you have to start somewhere. Safe travels to you and yours as you make your way to Iowa and the homecoming. Sounds like it would be a good time for all.

Regards,

RTROSE

RT,

Yeah the early college years are times of change and opportunities to be proud.
Sounds like your son is accepting the challenge and adapting very well. Indeed you should be proud

My Son did well last year (in a dorm room).
However; this year he is in a University 4-person apartment, with 2 friends.
I am hopeful/praying for only good surprises (perhaps this comes from remembering my own behaviour).....

Take Care!
Craig

Well, well ... a couple of old farts talking kid college stuff. At least I understand that better than those complicated charts and graphs and related mumbo jumbo about speakers output readings! Who has time to come up with these things?!

Anyway the college talk brings to mind my experience with son #1 , who listened closely while I explained this truism to him:

The lad proceeded to play it safe and stay at the lower two portions of the triangle, leaving the top portion to others. Thus did his college career come to an early and unglamorous end, and his military career began, where he finally learned what hard work was!

Hope you guys' kids learn that lesson the easier way!

Hanes,
I've always appreciated your sense of humor.
Too bad your kid didn't get to the top of that triangle.
My kid can't even achieve 2 of those vertices, he's just gonna cover off the bottom left one.

Kind of like the sign I read in a computer repair shop.

Good - Fast - Cheap pick any two

Good repairs cheap won't be fast.
Good repairs fast won't be cheap.
Fast repairs cheap won't be good.

Makes perfect sense to me.
