Criterion makes discs for the North American market so no extras on any of their discs would be PAL.

Right, but the Guillermo Del Toro set is blu-ray.
How could there be PAL extras?
None of the reviews I read mentioned anything about PAL or DVD extras.
The poster has the set so I'd have to believe he\\she knows what the deal is but...
Further reading says the discs are Region locked or region free.
The transfers are great, the transfers are not so good.
The Devil's Backbone is a DVD port filled with DNR and EE.
The extras are on the blu-ray discs, the extras are not in HD.
I guess I'll see for myself in a few days.

Thanks Josh.
I guess you don't own this set or you'd have posted more info.
I'm a bit surprised that there's not more talk about this.
Maybe there's a reason and one that doesn't bode well.

Anyway, mine should be here by Friday and I'm region free.
There are standalones coming in Feb 2011 but I was be surprised of they're not identical and collectively the same same price I paid for this set.
Plus I get the bonus pop-up!

Honestly, I never thought the US BD of Pan's was that egregious.
I could see the some of the grain reduction in the facial details but other details like the fabric and in general were quite good, imo.

That review contains a number of errors, such as suggesting that PL looks significantly better than the old release. It doesn't, it looks exactly the same. It's also VC-1, not AVC as stated in the review. I also think it's unduly harsh on TDB.

I'm starting to wonder where my order from Amazon UK is.
Shipped on the evening of 12/03.
Still not here on the West Coast, 12/13.
Orders usually take 7 days to arrive.
Oh well.

That happens with Amazon.co.uk when shipping to the US pretty often... at least on my end. A couple months ago I placed an order for a few books around October 15th, they shipped out a few days later with a delivery estimate of Oct. 29th. I waited until the end of November, got tired of waiting, and asked for a refund. They ended up showing up a few days into December.

By the way, my Guillermo Del Toro Collection shipped out on December 5th and the Estimated Delivery is listed as December 29th. Just log into your account on Amazon.co.uk, click the "Your Account" link in the upper right hand corner of the screen, click the big yellow "Your Orders" button under the "View, Modify, Track or Cancel an Order" text, and it'll list the delivery estimation dates of all your shipped items..... but like I said, it sometimes overshoots the estimated delivery date.

If the extras are SD, they'll likely be encoded in the PAL standard.

I dont really understand this either. Could you explain how the pitch related issue is actually an issue. I am no audio file at all, but i do know audio files hear some crazy things I cant hear, and im not sure if its placebo or not.

The nordic version also has a much higher bitrate for the audio then the u.k anyway.

I dont really get this pitch issue, would the people who encode the audio screw with the pitch or something? I wouldnt even know where to begin to do some research.

I keep reading these nordic/uk transfers are better pq (black hawk down, memento, pans labryinth) yet people keep saying the audio is worse? I dont understand how they judge it, or compare it.

I also think it was a bit harsh telling that guy to go away, what were getting into sounds like something an audio engineer would have to discuss.

On a side note I plan to just buy this copy and unregion lock with any dvd hd.

Finally got my set today.
As some others have said, the discs have a B on them, i.e., Region B.
FWIW, will post my Pan's impressions later tonight.

Sorry for the delay:
I watched the Del Toro set version of Pan's Labyrinth a couple night ago.
Look very, very good to me. More facial detail than the US version but I don't think that the way this film was shot that there's ever going to be micro-pore detail.
The soundtrack is also excellent.
No regrets. I'm giving the US version to a friend.
I plan on watching Cronos tomorrow.
I'm surprised there's not a thread on the Criterion release

I dont know which to choose. The uk would be easier, with the nordic i would have to burn in subtitles. The video looks better for the nordic, but the sound is supposidly worse.

Why cant we have just one great blu ray release for all films.

Do you seriously think you can see the difference between the UK and "Nordic" versions of this film?
FWIW, I don't think anyone can in a blind A\\B.

I do, with the screen caps I can easily tell, nordic has no dnr. Grain is in tact, some detail is lost in the uk.

What do you watch on? I am watching a projector 96 inch screen, dlp, things show up easily.

I could clearly see a difference between the u.k and american release of watchmen, this looks comparable in dnr. I a/b those two releases and ended up buying both.

Nobody else can see a difference between the nordic and u.k, nordic has no visible dnr, and more detail in the screens.

Maybe I am crazy.

Aside from aspect ratio, the difference is minimal.

Didn't read through this entire thread, but one option is to do what I did: create a new BD-ISO or MKV (via MKVMerge) using the UK disc video and the U.S. disc 7.1 DTS-MA audio. I play my MKV via Boxee Box, but if you need a disc and have a BD burner, you could use the ISO to create one.

LOL. I just read this entire thread to see if anyone had done that. I have the US release and I was wondering if everything lined up between the two timewise so I could buy the nordic version and use the video from that with the audio from the US version. May give it a try.

I would love the nordic video and u.s. audio, i have no idea how to do this. Would you just demux the video and audio and remux them?

Someone did girl with the dragon tattoo remux with the best video and loseless audio but i dont know how you line it up. Then you would also need subtitles, since I play it back on the oppo i think i would need the u.s. subtitles. I dont think srt works.
