Do we know if these titles are going to be region free?
Jon Mulvaney has repeatedly said their rights are only for North America and discs will therefore most likely be region coded. As always we won't know for sure until they're out, but it doesn't look good at this point.
Has Criterion delayed the first wave of BDs until Dec 16th?
i just got an email from criterion saying 40% off from their online store...they're moving warehouses and changing web sites so it's basically a moving sale. sale ends Nov 24, so maybe they're delaying the bd's until then, to keep things simple.
They might have delayed them after reading their own press release about the trade in program. Realizing that it made no sense what so ever for anyone involved.
This might be a stupid question, but is The Last Emperor something I should have in my collection?
I've not seen the movie but I know there's a lot of controversy about the aspect ratio. It was at 2.35:1 in the theaters and cropped to 2:1 for home video. It was at the direction of people involved with the production but it was only done because someone is trying to push a 2:1 standard aspect ratio.
no, I mean indeed the criterion DVD, as it was presented in the DVD Beaver review:
Hmm, I wonder if that was representative of the final Chris Doyle approved transfer, or if DVD Beaver got an early copy. From the blog link above it sounded like there were some very late changes including "dialing out some green in a few shots". Either way, it's been approved by Doyle so however it looks the Criterion version is how Doyle would have it presented, and that is exactly how I want it.
I would wait for other reviews to come in, it sounds like that is certainly not representative of the work they put into this new release. Also, they did indicate that they made changes after the DVD was essentially done.
The Criterion DVD comes out in two weeks, I suspect we will see more reviews closer to street date, but I'm not all that worried about the eventual quality of the blu-ray picture.
Certainly won't win any prizes for best-looking disc, but it looks untouched, and probably as it should (being an approved transfer and all.) Chungking Express is also being released by Artificial Eye in January, for the Region B people. Be interesting to see if they'll use the same transfer.
