Can somebody tell me why Criterion is issuing the DVD of The Last Emperor with both the theatrical and (unauthorized) television versions, but the Blu-ray with only the theatrical version?

The only up side to this is the Blu-ray version costs less than the 4-disc DVD version.

The Criterion Collection will be releasing The Third Man, The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Last Emperor on November 18!

Others are coming as well, including Bottle Rocket.

http://www.criterion.com/asp/browse_bluray.asp

I'll take The Third Man, The Last Emperor and Bottle Rocket right off the bat.

Nice start Criterion!

I even wrote down the estimated arrivals on a post-it! lol. 3rd Man 11/18, Bottle, Last emp, Man who fell 11/20, chungking 11/28.

just a few more weeks or so.

Do we know if these titles are going to be region free?

I'd love to pick up The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Jon Mulvaney has repeatedly said their rights are only for North America and discs will therefore most likely be region coded. As always we won't know for sure until they're out, but it doesn't look good at this point.

Dagnabbit!

Thanks for the answer.

I really hope these turn out to be region free, but if not, sooner or later I'm planning on picking up a region free modded Panny BD player anyway.

Crap! Did anyone else see on Criterion's "Coming Soon" page that all of the blu-ray releases have been pushed backed by a month or more?

Criterion never released it on DVD, that was Miramax. You can read about Criterion's recent restoration work here:

i just got an email from criterion saying 40% off from their online store...they're moving warehouses and changing web sites so it's basically a moving sale. sale ends Nov 24, so maybe they're delaying the bd's until then, to keep things simple.

They might have delayed them after reading their own press release about the trade in program. Realizing that it made no sense what so ever for anyone involved.

This might be a stupid question, but is The Last Emperor something I should have in my collection?

I've not seen the movie but I know there's a lot of controversy about the aspect ratio. It was at 2.35:1 in the theaters and cropped to 2:1 for home video. It was at the direction of people involved with the production but it was only done because someone is trying to push a 2:1 standard aspect ratio.

no, I mean indeed the criterion DVD, as it was presented in the DVD Beaver review: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCom...ingexpress.htm

too soft I'd say, I suspect the R3 Alto Media disc to be superior, but havent compared it yet

Hmm, I wonder if that was representative of the final Chris Doyle approved transfer, or if DVD Beaver got an early copy. From the blog link above it sounded like there were some very late changes including "dialing out some green in a few shots". Either way, it's been approved by Doyle so however it looks the Criterion version is how Doyle would have it presented, and that is exactly how I want it.

I would wait for other reviews to come in, it sounds like that is certainly not representative of the work they put into this new release. Also, they did indicate that they made changes after the DVD was essentially done.

The Criterion DVD comes out in two weeks, I suspect we will see more reviews closer to street date, but I'm not all that worried about the eventual quality of the blu-ray picture.

I received an e-mail from Amazon today advising that the delivery estimate on my pre-order of the 3rd Guy has been delayed until 12/24, so I would think so.

I guess the PQ will be OK nonetheless, the question is only how the colours will be. thats the most important thing.

This is a wonderful film, but a little hard to explain. Basically it's several stories of disparate people in Hong Kong and how their lives gradually intertwine.

Sounds dull but it's so inventive and entertaining that I think it's probably Wong Kar-Wai's most accessible film.

Damn shame Criterion is insisting on keeping up this region-locking nonsense, as I'm their new BD releses would have a huge audience around the world.

Oh well, as long as someone in my country eventually licences them for local release.

Certainly won't win any prizes for best-looking disc, but it looks untouched, and probably as it should (being an approved transfer and all.) Chungking Express is also being released by Artificial Eye in January, for the Region B people. Be interesting to see if they'll use the same transfer.
