Strangely enough, Bottle Rocket is the only Wes Anderson film I hadn't seen before. I enjoyed it quite a bit and I'd probably rank it third on his resume behind The Royal Tenenbaums (next, please!) and The Darjeeling Limited. The Blu-ray presentation was great and Criterion, as usual, does a much better job than most studios when it comes to including interesting extras.

I've already expressed this sentiment elsewhere but The Third Man is spectacular on BD. I really felt like I was at the theater for that one.

I can't wait to dig into Chungking Express and The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Now I could be crazy, but I see a fair amount of EE/ halos in the screencaps (feel free to call me out on this). Here's where I noticed it:

I see no fair amount of EE. If there is any it's quite minor.

Sorry, I didn't mean that it was super obvious like in TDK, I meant that I noticed it in most of the shots which led me to believe that it is prevalent through the entire film. I've edited my post to correct this, and yes it is quite minor, it was more a matter of principle that that the reviewers didn't catch this, but thanks for your input.

I really enjoyed the film overall, especially the style in which the film was shot. It did a superb job of creating a mood of loneliness in a big city.

As for the PQ, I was mostly bother by the black levels (or lack thereof) and the ugly grain that showed up in those dark scenes.

I'm sure it is an upgrade from the DVD, and many scenes actually look pretty decent, so any fan of the film would certainly enjoy the BD. Just don't expect eye popping clarity or contrast (and I doubt most fans of this film would have those expectations in any event).

Chinking Express is one of my favorite movies and I am really anxious to try that one.

I should received it next week.

I don't think it's EE but simply the accumulated effect of how edges looked on film, telecine non perfection, 4:2:0 encoding and compression.

And this is a stellar presentation of the film.

This is one of my all time favorites and I also own an NTSC DVD copy. This is a solid upgrade over the the DVD both visually and audibly. One interesting tidbit that immediately stood out upon starting the film was the aspect ratio; it was 1.66 whereas my original DVD was 1.78. This makes it look even "bigger" which is great.

I am a huge fan of both Wong Kar Wai and Christopher Doyle and the cinematography of this film is one of its strongest attributes; very highly stylized.

Don't remake anytitles in the future as The Last Emperor again,PQ I must accepted this is an old aged film but for SQ ,Criterion must did better than this(DTS-HD 2 speakers decode to be PL2X),many older films remixed the original sound(Dolby Stereo) to be a new digital surround and the result is good as Star Wars which look like just done lately.

Got an e-mail earlier from Amazon about the release date of "The 400 Blows" being pushed up to February, and I was wondering if anyone else that had pre-ordered from Amazon received the same thing? Below is from the e-mail.

Anyone had any trouble with The Third Man? My Samsung BD -P1500 never makes it to the menu screen. I don't receive any errors - just a blank screen.

I have the same player and that has happened to me once. I power-cycled the player and it was fine afterward.

On my Panasonic 10A The Third Man took a very long time to load, much longer than the other Criterion film I watched, The Man Who Fell to Earth. But it did eventually load and play.

Hum... I wonder if it's a mistake on Amazon's part?

Criterion's website still has it listed for March 24th, and I haven't seen any news of it being pushed up...

curious!

Anyone know what's happening with "Walkabout"? It was one of the first 3 or 4 titles that Criterion mentioned when they announced plans for Blu-Ray last year. But it's still waiting to get a release date, so it seems.

I'm dying for it, too. This is probably just the modern extension of typical Criterion territory, though. Pretty much every time they announce a bunch of several titles, at least one or two of them end up delayed a few months. The materials for this film (which is one of my personal top 20) are in good enough shape, to my understanding, that this disc should be a real stunner when it arrives.

I don't feel special...

Well, the text below is from the initial newsletter that Criterion sent out to its subscribers via e-mail. A list of 13 initial films were mentioned, but we've already seen them announce two films, "The Last Metro" and "In The Realm Of The Senses," that weren't a part of the original line-up of discs to come. So, it's really anyone's guess, it seems, as to when "Walkabout" will finally get its blu-ray release.

From Criterion's blu-ray announcement newsletter, May 2008...

"Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We've picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we'll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.

Here's what's in the pipeline:

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we'll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg's outback masterpiece at the same time."

I never bought any of Criterion's DVDs but do have 10 Criterion LDs. These are Arsenic and Old Lace, Blade Runner, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Diva, Howards End, Night of the Hunter, North By Northwest, The Third Man, Tootsie and 2001.

Looking at that list it seems that studios that originally released major movies are doing their own BDs: Blade Runner, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and 2001. It also seems probable that the original studio will release North By Northwest on BD and also most likely Tootsie at some point.

This essentially leaves Criterion with titles that none of the studios want to do, which I guess is what happened to Criterion and their DVD production. This, I'm sure translates into low sales which doesn't give them the resources to release a lot of titles quickly, instead it's going to be a slow dribble. I'm just thankful that they released The Third Man even though it was late.

I watched The Third Man last night and was very happy with the upgrade to BD. I have a relatively 'soft' Pearl projector and the detail present was still impressive.

I know some demand more cowbell, but after watching this last night I'm thinking... give me more zither!

I need more zither!

Just got an email from Amazon saying that the ship date for the 400 Blows has been delayed back to the 26th of March. I had to go to their web site and approve the delay by Feb. 12 or they would cancel the order. Naturally, as I got in on the recent price brake, I approved the delay.

Nice to see that Bottle Rocket was not a victim of DNR. I was surprised to see an even but not distracting amount of grain in every scene all through the movie. I'm not a fan of grain for the sake of grain, but it was nice to see something that looked like a movie instead of something that was shot on digital video.

NOW: my post on AVS Forum.
