I agree it's OK but definitely edge enhanced and some scenes look almost The Longest Day filtered. Great film though.

My A Night to Remember BD arrived from Amazon UK today. Although it appears to be the identical film restored by ITV Studios it lacks some of the extras to be found on the Criterion disc. The other side of the coin is that the delivered price of the UK disc was about $10 less than the Criterion disc would have been. On balance, I wouldn't be surprised if most of you decided that buying the UK disc would be more trouble than the savings is worth. Nevertheless, in the interest of full disclosure, I thought I should report the differences.

Damn it. I knew there was little chance but I was really hoping for something better for La Haine, but it's the same dreadful StudioCanal transfer as all previous editions.

Bleah. Criterion's better off not putting their name on something like that.

Personally, I wish Criterion would seek out some classic Hong Kong films, like PEKING OPERA BLUES.

Nobody has posted July's announcements yet, huh? I get it, it's quite a disappointing month. But here they are:
  • Down by Law
  • Metropolitan
  • The Last Days of Disco
  • Le Havre

And in a newsletter sent out today they hinted Rosemary's Baby.

Looks like the Universal embargo on new transfers isn't so universal anymore: Being John Malkovich. Some nice teal instead though.

It looks to have the same dimness as the HD-DVD version, it just might have more film grain. Would like to see a comparsion with the HD-DVD.

Caps-a-holic has some shots from the Universal Blu-ray, it's a completely different transfer from that.

Neither are the Criterion BD or the HD-DVD version, that hardly counts.

Like I have been suspecting for a long time, Masters of Cinema brightens across the board, flattening the image as a result. Other then that the two versions of Lost Souls appear identical.

What is the release date for TENENBAUMS? It's my favorite Wes Anderson flick.

I have high hopes for the PQ on this, as the transfer on the Criterion RUSHMORE is absolutely jaw dropping.

EDIT: nevermind, release date is August 14th for ROYAL TENENBAUMS.

I found a Criterion Collection Blu-Ray section at Best Buy the other day. Quite a selection. Never saw that coming.

Are they priced @ BB prices or Criterion SRP?

They're usually $29.99. I usually PM B&N during their 50% off sale and use RZ certs to get them even lower.

I dunno if I was just not in the mood, or something, because both of these films have gotten good-if-not-terrific ratings, as I just looked-up RT on IMDB again (rating 7.6!).

I suppose I will give them both another try some day.

Love Royal Tenenbaums, but really despised Wes Anderson's other films.

Never could get the affection people have for Lebowski. It's just... odd.

It improves on repeat viewing. Once you no longer expect much in the way of well, plot or character development, it's actually quite enjoyable. I feel the same way about The Life Aquatic. First viewing was odd and even a little off-putting, fourth viewing was great.

I love all the Coen brothers' stuff and The Big Lebowski is one of my all time favorite comedies. Nevertheless, I understand that the Coens take some getting used to and some don't like them at all. The first time I saw The Big Lebowski I was underwhelmed but liked it better and better upon repeat viewings. I experienced the same phenomenon with Barton Fink. In recent years, though, I have been completely on the boys' wavelength. Hell, I even liked The Ladykillers.

Hoping for more than just the laserdisc extras and finally a bypass transfer, but being Universal I doubt it.
