What is up with this HD anime with the overuse of some kind of softening filter? Appleseed Ex Machina got it and even Vexille (which BTW will be available on Blu-ray) has that hazy look. They said its their style but to me it just downgrades the crispness look of animation like those 2D Disney.

No siginificant difference while watching the two versions between the 1080i AVC Japanese release and the 1080p AVC US release. Much like the Terminator 3 comparison I did before.

The TC version has DTS-HD MA, Dolby TrueHD while the DC version has only Dolby TrueHD lossless audio. The AQ is very good. Personally Vexille still has the superior sound with more use of the surrounds and LFE. Then again its not fair since Afro Samurai doesn't have futuristic machines exploding all over the place

I can already tell you the U.S. release has a much lower average video bitrate than the posted one for the Japanese import. I've watched the first two episodes and the U.S. one is encoded in AVC where it ranges between 12 to 36 Mbps with many scenes staying in the teens. The runtime on the U.S. disc is 131 minutes. The U.S. disc hasn't impressed me that much so far. I haven't seen the import in action.

Yes. But the lower US version PQ is the same. At least when watching it. This anime is just too darn soft.

The softness is to keep it from looking like this. It's just the way they do things and it's the same with most digital anime. Lower budgets prohibit drawing/rendering in the same extremely high resolutions as the Disney CAPS and Pixar titles, and production is also often split between many different animation studios, where each may be doing things a bit differently.

So basically it's a choice between an overall softer look, or sharper but with lots of aliasing and inconsistent animation.

If you want really beautiful and sharp animation, you need to go back to the titles made with cels and film. Most of Bandai Visual's older titles like the Patlabor movies look fantastic, and I can't wait for Disney to start releasing the Ghibli catalogue on Blu-ray.

i don't think it was a budget issue. It had about a million an episode. That's a lot for an American animation series.

I saw the first episode on spike and hated it. Maybe HD will make me change my mind, the $10 price tag is worth the risk.

What sucks is that this just made me want Samurai Champloo in HD even more, now that series has a real killer soundtrack.

And I would be surprised if Samurai Champloo was animated in HD.

That would make sense. I'm pretty sure SC has been broadcast in HD in Japan.

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Studio quality tier
Most Major studios>Small Studios>dogs>cats>Warner(the guys that do new movies)

An example of what I mean by inconsistent animation. These are all from the same movie, RahXephon: Pluralitas Concentio (HD DVD).

Sharp, but the lines are all aliased and squiggly like in Justice League:

An example of a softer type, more like Afro Samurai:

Here the look is a bit different. What's more, the character in the middle is drawn differently from the rest of the frame:

Upon a second look though, Afro Samurai does seem even fuzzier than normal, so maybe a lot of it was intentional.

Does this disc have Japanese audio? I found Jackson to be really annoying (as the chatterbox guy).

No, and as far as I know no Japanese dub of Afro Samurai even exists.

I actually think those are somewhat consistent. A a lot of anime uses soft lighting, especially under lamp posts at night(pic #2). With that one I think the lighting just changed from scene to scene.

But I know what you mean when you say they can be inconsistent. Because they take so long to animate, and sometimes they have to go to different animation houses and post production and things like that.

With AS I'm betting the director was going for something of a foggy look. Comparable to the dust one would find in the west, since the series borrows so much from westerns. Well maybe just softening it to make it look a little more old-world, that's probably a better way to put it. It's probably the best it can look.

One more thing - The more HD animation the better. Nothing benefits more from hi-res than the little drawings.

I really looked for some kind of discernible difference between the two while in motion especially high motion scenes. The PQ is solid no macroblocking at all. The US Director's Cut gets my nod of course because its . . . err ..Director's Cut

The Director's cut lacks the sweet RZA song during the intro.

I've yet to see the theatrical version, but when you factor in how many openings, "last time" clips and credit sequences there are on the Director's Cut, I'd imagine the differences are minimal. The DC moniker was created before the Theatrical Cut even even existed, to differentiate it from the edited Spike TV version. Wither or not Fumoniro Kizaki actually likes the TC or the DC better, I don't know. The TC features a commentary in Japanese... that might shed more light on the whole thing?

As always, thanks for the caps Xylon. FUNimation has been known for producing some pretty ugly low-bitrate DVDs (with Afro Samurai being one of their better transfers!), so I'm glad to see the BD look as good as it does. The Japanese transfer is ever so slightly sharper, but that's the only difference I can find.

Definitely. Like you I'm not a big fan of whatever the animators are applying to soften up or create a hazy look in the image.
