Either way, it was still very detailed, maintaining natural grain, possessing deep blacks, and using a color source similar to, if not the same as, that of the Australian BD. I was pleased by the vibrancy of reds and greens (glowsticks) in the cave and the stylistic blue tint to the above-ground scenes.

Even if it was an upconvert, the lighter vs darker would still be apparent. Now, is you bedroom CRT calibrated the same as your computer monitor where you saw the screen shots? With all this discussion and versions I can't remember if the R1 SD DVD is the same as the R2 SD DVD or AUS BD (the latter 2 it seems are the "same"). I've never seen the R1 SD DVD.

So, is the US BD the only (BD/DVD) version that looks like it does in terms of higher gamma and brighter?

It's free on Comcast OnDemand right now (FearNet HD). I put it on tonight just to see what it looked like and it was def an upconvert but it did have the UK DVD/AUS BD color palette.

A tad OT, but before I used a TivoHD/cablecard I tried to watch movies on FearNet HD. Between the horrible popup/graphics and so-so PQ (and commericals?, I can't remember) it was not worth it. So, don't worry, you're not missing anything, IMO.

Is the R1 SD DVD like the R2 SD DVD or is it like the US BDs?

CD Wow now sell Blu Rays ?

I must now check this out

Oh shoot they charge over £20 each - Boy has the pound nosedived....Too steep for me and i can't even buy imports from CD Japan anymore as things which used to cost £25 now cost nearly £50 due to a weak pound.

Any sites selling this edition cheaper than £20 ? ( i'm having to cutback so buying less )

Now while I said that I do like the US blu better because of the lack of detail in the Aus version, after seeing the US dvd I have to say that the Aus version is the correct version to view. I guess I'll have both.

From what d34dl1n3r said, it seems that the US DVD does use the same colour palette as the UK DVD and AUS blu-ray.

Thanks. So it appears the US BDs are the "odd men out".

CDWOW was charging £14.49 pounds at the time I purchased it (with free shipping). Unfortunately it isn't here yet (in US). They dispatched it Monday the 2nd.

Mine just arrived. Looks like it was shipped from Hong Kong!? Was hoping it would be in a regular sized case rather than the oversized UK style BD cases. I didnt realize the skull on the cover was formed with the women on the show as I've never seen the cover close-up before. Going to check it out tonight!

The screenshots here pretty much reflect the changes. I will say the Liongsate version looks way better on my projector than my lcd monitor shows... even so...the AUS version just looks more dynamic, and overall more eye pleasing... as others have said... it looks more like we'd expect it to look.

I will also note -- I skimmed through the FEARNET HD version and it does look like the AUS version as well... It was OAR too.

Nobody mentioned the AUS release had a substantial bitrate increase compared to the US? I just checked 2 scenes. Scene 2 when Juno runs through the woods and wakes the others, the US hovers around 20-24Mbps, while the AUS is 30-37Mbps. Same with the scene when the dust clears from the tunnel collapse. Both scenes had roughly a 10-15Mbps increase, give or take.

Edit: This copy does seem even grainier, maybe more noise actually. Perhaps the US AVC copy still has NR being done. I would actually be curious to see screengrabs from the US AVC and AUS copies put through noise filters and look at them. (Sorry, I don't know what they are called, just where the picture is grey showing nothing but outlines and noise/grain.)

I guess the only part that looks noisy is the dust settling scene, the rest looks fine with healthy grain.

Interesting, I thought I noticed a tad more grain in a few of the earlier scenes such as the "see you down there" scene. I guess I need to do some more comparing.

Just a note that Wal-Mart stores have this available at $10.00, I checked the store closest to my house and all 5 copies they had on the shelf had the top sticker with the title and catalog number printed on it. Post #105 doesn't seem to have the pictures anymore so I don't know if they match or not.

Wow. I paid $31 at BB for the US AVC when I bought it, a couple months ago.

Got my Aus copy. Looks much better I had my doubts but actually seeing this version there is a definite improvement. I wish I still had the US version to compare, but I think the mixes are different. I'm getting more surround activity and LFE with this one - might be mixed for home theater. But to be fair I never watched the US copy all the way through.

Extras aren't working on my PS3. I think I got a bad disc, each time I select one it just goes to the main menu. Anyone else have this problem? The screen doesn't go black, so I don't think it's a PAL NTSC thing(SD extras I assume), it just goes to the main menu.

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Studio quality tier
Most Major studios>Small Studios>dogs>cats>Warner(the guys that do new movies)

The extras are definitely PAL, so I think that's the most logical explanation for them not working for you.
