Nice cover! Man, I already have 4 copies of this movie, just on BD. Only way I'll buy if it has equal PQ as AUS (don't think it can top it) and a 7.1 lossless track.

I won't hold my breathe.

Look through the pages of this thread. You will find comparisons made between the AVC and MPEG-2 version. You'll also find the australian version and how it compares....

Reviews are just opinions.... judge for yourself

Probably because it was 5-star back in 2006 when those reviews were likely written...

Most German labels are getting around that by having a reversible sleeve. Some are even cheekier and print it on the actual cellophane wrapper, which obviously comes away when you remove the packaging.

Also, Dutch release:

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE'RE BACK!!! There is a new 3.0 update to the Playstation 3 (it's dated for tomorrow, but you can download it right now). It doesn't mention anything about correcting the PAL menu glitch in the list of revisions but I just tried the Australian BD of THE DESCENT and IT PLAYS!!! YEAH HOO! I thought I had a $40 coaster on my hands, but we're back in business folks. Thanks, Sony, for getting your act back together--see that this doesn't happen again!

I have no idea if I had anything to do with it but I'm feeling good about actually communicating this issue to someone at SCEA tech support. Whether it's true or not, they told me at the time that they had submitted an issue ticket to the team that works on the firmware.

It took so long to show up, I figure that I didn't accomplish anything though.

I'm just happy that they fixed it.

Even though Sony did break, they did fix it and it didn't take a year. So you guys that sent requests should send thank-yous for this particular issue. Thumbs up Sony firmware team.

So what happened to part 2? I was going watch this before it came out.

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Good job, Sony. Although I'm not really affected since I have a stand-alone Region B player as well as my Region A PS3, I'm glad (and impressed) they put in the effort to fix this blunder rather than leaving their customers high and dry.

Has anyone tried to go to the special features yet? What does it do? I think it originally used to kick you back out to the main menu...

I tested it out -- if you try to go to the PAL extras, it just throws you back to main menu. I was hoping it could now play the PAL but no luck... at least it doesnt give you an error code and dump you back to the PS3 OS.

I'm running an older version of the software, before the troubles. Being dumped back to the main menu is exactly what happens with the old software.

I've already mentioned this, at least somewhere because it's hard to keep track on which forums I've posted to.

I purchased the US version from Amazon.com on July 6th resigned to the fact that I'd end up getting the inferior MPEG version. I thought that as it was only $9.99 plus postage I could live with it until the 'best' version was released.

When it arrived I was amazed to find it was an AVC encode. My first thought was that I'd struck lucky in getting one of the AVC discs. However when I checked it out I found that the colour timing had been corrected (easiest shot to compare was the shot of the group photo outside the cabin. The scene now matched the one on the AUS version. Other scenes were also found to match.)

Further checks revealed that the contrast had also been corrected (the black levels are now correct in the cave scenes whilst still preserving detail into the darkest recesses, but not as 'dark' as the AUS version by its overuse of the contrast control so wiping out lots of low level detail.)

Colours are also stronger in the styilized scenes (when the caves are lit up in red for example) than on the original US discs, but they're not quite as strong as the colours on the AUS version which I think are a bit OTT to be honest (and, along with the contrast issue, the reason why I didn't get this version.)

Further, someone posted that his recently acquired (at the time he posted 3 or 4 months back) US AVC disc had the same corrections as to what I have found above, but I think people dismissed him as he was the only one stating it at that time. So from my findings (and his) I do conclude that Lionsgate have at some point quietly re-released it yet again, and that this version is now the best of the four so far.

Finally, it must be said that if I was looking to buy the disc now I would wait until the UK disc is released to see what that is like and what extras are on it. Doing so would also avoid the lottery of which US version of the three you'd end up with, though chances are you'd end up with this corrected one.

Cheers.
R.

WOW, like it wasn't deranged enough, the plot thickens even more.

I have the first US AVC version and the Aussie disc. But I'd love to see some screencaps compartison with this supposedly new version. If it's really the best version available, I guess I'll have to order one more copy of this title.
