The US release isn't artificially brightened. What seems to be the case is that it's lacking the color correction/timing from post-production, so you see the raw footage where they had the lights up brighter so the actors could tell what they were doing.

Hey guys, I just created this account because I've been reading this thread since I ordered the US version last week from Amazon and I think I got the AVC version. It has the AVC style sticker and the disc's front and back looks like the AVC version. Anyways, I thought maybe it would help with anyone looking for this particular version.

What format does your player say it is decoding?

theres a new UK version from Pathe no idea how that compares though, byt the old SD dvd from them was top notch with full bitrate DTS, the Blu is DTS MA 5.1.

After reading this thread and seeing the various screen shot comparisons, it was obvious I had to upgrade . I have the MPEG 2 version and those shots of the Australian version were like night and day. My australian copy is on the way!

Thanks. Who's going to take one for the team to see how it compares to the other discs?

VC-1:

AVC:

MPEG-2:

at first I thought you were all on crack saying the AVC was better (I kinda hate grain), but maybe that just has to do with monitor size (23"). after lookin closer at them and zooming in a bit it's clear the AVC has a lot more detail. initially comparing the vc-1 I thought it was the worst of the three...but looking closer at it...it might be the best of the 3. it appears it has been unmodified. the AVC appears to have been brightened and the color messed with a bit (I'm sure there's a special term for this like hue or etc). in this snapshot you're able to see stuff a bit better from the brightening....but at the same time it seems to kinda leave the colors washed out. also the vc-1 seems to have more in the picture...suggesting the others have been cropped a bit.
anyways, those are my conclusions...I could be way off (I don't get into detailed comparisons and analysis much). so let me know what you guys think

Yes, AVC does look the best. I'm not surprised at all that the VC-1 encode has less of a "grain structure". Thanks for the pics. This movie may have the most BD encodes that have been discussed here.

I still want to pick up this movie at some point. Is there anyway to distinguish on the keepcase if it's AVC?

Also, is the Austrailian verison region free?

There was a lot of discussion on that earlier in the thread but I think the end result was that there were not any consistent identifiers that could be discerned from examining a wrapped copy of the movie. The AUS version is region free and IMO was the most significant upgrade for me when going from MPEG2 > AVC > VC-1 and yes I found the audio to be better to... surrounds were more active and LFE was more prominent in the DTS-HD MA track to my ears.

Ok -- so the VC-1 looks darker than the AVC.... Now is this the Australian AVC we're comparing against, or the US AVC? Is the color more similar to US or AUS?

I was just mocking your choice because I think the VC-1 is the best, then the AVC and then mpeg-2. you might have totally different thoughts =P

The AUS version is the one I have and prefer, I thought that was VC-1 but I guess I'm mistaken. I started out with the MPEG2 and then picked up the US AVC which was better but not as drastic IMO as I had hoped. The AUS version was the end game for me on this title and I compared all 3 on my on rig and felt the AUS was quite superior and the most noticeable improvement between the three.

that australian one might be about the same as the VC-1
the colors and such look about the same
I really don't like the brightening or whatever was done to the US AVC

I might see if I can get some shots of the vc-1 to compare to the AUS one

Anyone know what the video is like on the German disc? I see it has 6.1 DTS HD audio.

If it's the same as the AUS disc I'd love to order it along with Jeepers Creepers from Amazon.

The above post is 100% medically accurate

It's about $17.50 USD now at ezydvd.com. Shipping wasn't that much - I forget what it cost me. For some reason it's always on pre-order - Aug 2, 2010 is expected date.
