From press release:

The Godfather and The Godfather, Part II underwent extensive frame-by-frame examination and restoration utilizing state-of-the-art digital technology in this historic preservation effort, which required more than a year to complete. Robert A. Harris of the Film Preserve supervised the restoration under the direction of Coppola and cinematographer, Gordon Willis. Harris’ restoration credits include Lawrence of Arabia, Vertigo and Rear Window among others.

Lots of work was done for this Blu-ray release. Everything has been changed. This is not your dad's Godfather movie. There will be major differences in color timing, contrast and brightness. I am not going to go any further with more technical details since everyone can Google to find it

As you all know Godfather has a very stylized look. From the dark and subdued of the first scene, to the bright overblown outdoor whites of the outdoor wedding scene. Don't expect this movie to look like The Searchers or Grand Prix or How The West Was Won. It doesn't have the sharpness and the color saturation of those three movies. And there is nothing wrong with that. This is how the movie looks according to the artist(s) intent. Plenty of grain here folks

And now for the nitpicking . . . . .

No DNR or EE observed. But some minor scratches and dust here and there. Its no big deal. You won't notice them during playback.

Read this article from the American Society of Cinematographers regarding the restoration work.

Shush, Reserved10 looks better than the SD DVD, that's all that matters!

You can really see what the improved contrast and golden hues does for the look of the film. The old DVD just looks terribly flat and boring in comparison.

Interested to see the colours on GF3. The shots from DVDBeaver look way off, but looks like they had some issues with their equipment.

#5 has me the most excited about receiving these titles. It's a pretty big jump in detail, even though some of that can be attributed to the contrast changes.

While the difference is noticeable in all of the shots, it was only the third one that made me think wow.

What are you talking about? What idiot pays MSRP nowadays??

You can get the Godfather Blu-ray set for $60 on Amazon or $59 @ Tower.com website.

+1

DrXym nailed it: while those first two comparison shots show a modest improvement in quality, that third one is almost literally an order-of-magnitude jump. Kind of an oddity, at least to me, but hey...

It's only logical. We see details in qualitative manner, for example facial detail as creases, freckles, hair, etc. In top picture, face takes up large part of the screen, and you can make out most facial details even on the SD DVD. On the third picture, faces on the SD DVD is perhaps 20 or 30 pixels wide, and therefore when that gets doubled on Blu-ray, the incremental increase in facial detail is much, much greater (can actually make out who the actors are).

You mean like popping into a picture comparison thread to announce to the world that you are going to rent some movies instead of buying them because you deem them too expensive?

Thanks Xylon. I have come to the conclusion every one else should have their screen cap licence taken away.

I think these pictures have gotten me more excited than any of the others I have seen with the exception of the ones from ASC.

Best demonstration - look at James Caan in the last comparison. You can actually tell it's James Caan in the second, whereas the first looks like the Zapruder Film.
