No DNR added. No loss of fine details for this Blu-ray unlike other Universal's earlier releases. Very nice. Higher bitrates and lossless audio for the Blu-ray disc. No discernible difference between the PQ (only screenshots can tell you). Don't bother squinting Yes, some minor EE is still there.

A worthy upgrade? I would say a safe one. PQ and AQ is a crapshoot. I will leave that up to you

Thanks Xylon.

BD has the ever-so-slightest-better grain retention. Will definitely keep HD DVD though.

I'm sure more pics coming, but a high-motion comparison would be great!

I'm surprised the file sizes are so different though. One is 40 GB, the other is 22 GB, but the average bit-rate is only 5mbps higher..

Once again: great!

Thank you Xylon.

Could you please do a similar comparison for The Kingdom and hopefully The Thing?

Is that good or bad? I don't know what to make of your finding.

Usually, a noticeable increase in sharpness can be attributed to Edge Enhancement. But you don't say...

They're both pretty fantastic to my eyes - which might be playing tricks, but I feel like the gamma to lower range (ha! pun intended!) is ever so slightly brighter on the BD? Are they the same exact frame? My eye for colour & tonal range isn't as good as my eye for detail.

If I can indulge a bit of talk and stretch the meaning of the film's look/'visuals', whatever you feel about the movie (I think the Dr. Jeckyl/Mr Hyde focus and plays on the meaning of "nature" were completely justified, no matter how "high-minded" most people considered it), I think the Hulk cg was woefully underappreciated. Absolutely the equal of Gollum. Anytime you move eyes more than one eyespace apart, a human character won't seem "real", but it's completely in keeping with the Jack Kirby neanderthal metaphor/stylisation, and was a conscious aesthetic decision rather than a lack of skill. Same thing with his leaping. There's a point where the distance the character leaps can't possibly be "real" in terms of physics as far as mass & height vs distance travelled (similar problem to Spiderman actually), but the comic character did it, and they made a decision to keep that 'super-power'. And as for his colour, I think it was funny that green skin is so "unrealistic" that to see whether he was sitting in the plate correctly they actually rendered him with regular skin because green is so distracting! Most of the unconvincing stuff to me was stuff that will never be "solved" - subjective decisions about performance and movement. Look at the trailer for Benjamin Button and it's still the same. The eyes (hardest thing to do in cg) are pretty great.

So basically what I'm saying is I think the film's visuals were unfairly slammed for "lack of realism", and looking back were ahead of the pack, and still hold up pretty damn well (and are actually better than much of what is being produced 5 years later). Enough rambling...

Back to technical disc stuff, I'm really excited to see they got such a good transfer to both HD formats and will be getting this for sure.

So do I understand correctly that these are the same master, same codec, with the only real difference being less compression and therefore a bit less blockiness? And that the difference is much less noticeable the bigger files get as it's an exponentially reductive curve where the higher the initial bitrate/lower the initial compression rate, the less noticeable the difference (in other words bad to good is much more noticeable than great to really great)? A law of diminishing returns - but any improvement at all is preferably to me.

People here keep talking about how there's not much difference with the higher bitrates and newer codecs, but that actually seems logical to me and I don't understand why it would be otherwise. Like the jump from a 300ppi printer's output to a 600ppi is going to be much more discernible than that between a 600 to 1200 ppi printer. I still want the 1200, even if most can't see the difference. Am I thinking right?

And yeah I can see the ee on that shot of them against the sky, but the contrast in that shot has got to be pretty much the worst-case scenario in the film, right?

Glad to see that Universal didn't mush up this one.

EE reported here.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=588

The video on HD DVD displayed specs of dust and dirt throughout the running time. I hope Universal have got rid off these impurities.

Blu-ray : 340

I can tolerate a few specks of dust if the PQ is good. Hulk is not bad for a film transfer (no DI) from 2003, especially from Universal.

This release should be a great example on how to do it right.

No dumbing it down.

Yeah, as opposed to The Thing (Why was that thread closed with the cryptic comment, "Enough"?!).

Good God I hope that the HD-DVD to BD for Jackson's Kong is like The Hulk, and not The Thing (and I wonder if we'll get a seamless branching theatrical and extended in one?)! Pleeaaase Universal! Fingers crossed...

It was closed because someone had to tweak one of the garbs adding fake grain for argument's sake and it spiraled out of control. It REALLY should be reopened or Xylon should make a new thread. The BD of The Thing got the shaft and people should see the prettied up, grain free, dumbed down version we got so the anti-grain crowd can be placated.

Yeah maybe a new one to show comparisons between the US DNRd one and the UK or German ones. It sorta seems strange to me that there are still multiple encodes considering there's no PAL/NTSC rez difference and they're both 24fps but I guess we've seen that sometimes that's a good thing with stuff like Pan's Labyrinth and so on...

Oh... just realised what a "garb" was, heh!

Loving these Hulk shots. Watched it last night and it looked pretty darn great. And one of the few modern movies where the VFX shots have their own visual style (the freaky dream stuff in the desert and so on). Nice.

Why the hell compare HD DVD to Blu-ray?

You know there aren't much differerence between those.

It should be DVD Vs Blu-ray
