Are you talking about Blu-rays? Interesting to me the new titles are $2.99 with Blockbuster's service...with Redbox, it's $1.50.

There's a new movie I want to see called "Margin Call." It's not quite available on Blu-ray just yet, however it is now available with DirecTV's "On Demand" for....$7.99!!!!! And yes, that would be in HD.

I think I'll just wait a little while when it shows up on Redbox!

Movies must be OAR, sports and movies must also have 5.1 audio, No EE or NO SALE!

what's funny barnman, is that the price is the same for DVD's AND Blu-rays! Interesting twist that blockbuster is doing in their stores....

Just wanted to point out that, at least at the store I use, the pricing for New Releases at Blockbuster is $2.99 for the first night and $.99 for each additional night.

I guess that's not bad if you plan to keep the title more than one night...for what ever reason that would be.

Blockbuster's $2.99 price is 100% higher than Redbox's one night rental price. Wow, 100% higher!

I just make sure I return the Blu-ray the next day before 9pm.

Depending on how many days you have the title out, it can even be cheaper than Redbox, of course.

For brand new releases (often titles Redbox won't have for another month) - for the first night. The store I visit charges $1.99 for the first night of older new releases and $.99 for catalog titles.

Just making sure all of the pertinent facts are out there. Both companies have their advantages and disadvantages.

Only
because there are next to no places to rent a disc anymore. I've just been forced to start using them and I'm AMAZED at how miniscule their title selection is. Especially for BD. Dark times for movie rentals.

In related news Redbox told Warner Bros to take a hike on their "56 day wait for new releases".

Good for Redbox. I wonder how that will work out for them, since they tried buying discs at retail back in 2009, but had to quit when retailers refused to sell them more than a couple of copies at a time.

I wish them the best of luck, even though they're really just contributing to Warner being able to say "See, the delay increased sales!"

i'm all in with redbox. netflix half heartedly supports b.r. and doesn't support old movies released on b.r.

blockbuster rentals is better with b.r. but they're expensive.

redbox allows me to reserve the b.r. movies i want to watch and only charges a $1.50 a day. i can rent 12 b.r. movies a month for the cost of blockbuster's monthly subscription.

with dish movie pass, we can stream other movies.

this is as good as it's gonna get.

just worried the studios will try and squeeze redbox and limit availability as
they certainly are the most consumer friendly dvd service.

I like what RedBox does with discount codes. It seems that there's always something going on to give you a break on the rental costs. I've been using the RedBox Trivia to score discounts. You can get up to $0.50 off of a rental if you get all 5 questions correct. That makes it pretty reasonable to rent a BluRay for a night (if you find something in your machine worth watching).

I wish the selection was more varied. I haven't seen very many titles that I was itching to see. In that sense, I think NetFlix would be a more appropriate service for my needs. I haven't browsed their selection but I'd imagine that it's quite a bit nicer. It would be pretty awesome to be able to rent music/concert DVDs in BluRay. There are a lot that I want to see but few that I'm certain would get watched enough to warrant the $20 price.

Just look at any NEW RELEASE listing for a particular week. Then see how many of those titles are carried by Redbox on BD. RB is fine for a handful of big studio films...but everything else falls by the wayside. So if you want to see MONEYBALL, you're in luck. But if you're looking for BDs of MILL AND THE CROSS or TEXAS KILLING FIELDS, you might be out of luck.

My biggest beef with RB is the lack of BD material ..

i actually find that they have a pretty good selection of recently released br films. if you want to see the older movies re-released in b.r. than stick with bb as they have the biggest selection.

wow, having issues with redbox bds.

rented girl with the dragon tatoo on br and the pq was really poor, so bad that i concluded that i was watching a dvd not a br. called redbox to complain and the gave me 3 promo rental codes to make up for it. fine

now if you call redbox their automoted phone service sez, "if you are having
problems with your copy of the girl with the dragon tatoo press 1" which seems to support my hypothesis that there renting purported bds which are actually dvds.

last night, using one of their damn promo codes, i rent br tinker, tailor, soldier, spy and the disc wouldn't read. it played all the previews just fine and got right up to where the universal logo starts spinning which usually means its loading, but the damn movie wouldn't play. tried all the usual tricks, reboot, wipe with micro fiber, open/close tray but nada.

i call redbox today and get 3 more promo codes, but i am really starting to wonder if they're doing something fishy with their br titles.

maybe they're buying them from the chinese counterfeit market, but 2 in a row is very weird.

i think i'm done with redbox regretably.

besides the poor quality br on dragon tattoo, just rented ghost protocol br which just looked ok. on the protocol thread people are calling it reference quality transfer. that is not what i saw.

someone suggested that redbox is only using single layer bd25 for their bd rentals, which would explain why the pq is noticeably inadequate.

also their quality control is the shits. i rented tinker tailor bd from redbox for the 3rd time last night. first 2 wouldn't play in my panny bd 35, and guess what happened last night. wouldn't play again!!!

bb rentals are getting worsed on redbox is using cheapy bds, so looks like i'm back to nf.

It could be that Tinker Tailor uses a new type of copy protection that is preventing from playing on your BD35. The fact that you have rented 3 copies and none of them would play has little to do with Redbox's quality control. It's likely a firmware issue with your player. Redbox likely gets their rentals from distributors, the same as Netflix or Blockbuster would.

+1 rented it 2 days ago and looked great! BTW, I once had a similar "multiple disk rental problem" early on from RedBox, and finally realized it WAS copy protection. They were really nice about it (and credited me a couple of rentals), but I felt pretty guilty (and stupid) afterwards. I have since dropped NetFlix and use RedBox regularly (without a single "bad" disk).

you may be right. customer service is great, but very frustrating to rent bds that won't play.

now i'll have to re-learn how to update firmware on my bd, have to download to usb or something as no direct internet connectivity.

don't think so. use my avatar bd for reference and it looks good as hell.

9g kuro, panny bd35 connected via hdmi gen 2 or 3, 7 year old surround via optical. haven't updated firmware on bd for 2 1/2 years so my guess with tinker tailor is a copy protection issue as you suggest.

I found the same thing on War Horse..VQ rated by Ralph Potts, whom I trust big time, was in the high 90's but the disk I got from redbox looked high 80's or maybe a ninety. Then I saw the movie being played in a local superstore and it looked like it deserved the high rating. Is it my equipment..I don't think so..but I'll compare a rented copy from my favorite local video store and see.
The audio was horrible is spots and I know for sure it's not my audio setup as I tested it with Rambo at killer levels and it was smooth an powerful.

Why would they do that? You could always try calling the MPAA to have them look into it. Though I would make damn sure you know what your talking about before calling.

The only problem I'm having with Redbox is their website and how it works with my browser. When I try to find the location of a movie or try to place it on hold, I get a message reading "Unknown API Error."

So after that, there's nothing I can do.

Seeing as he's admitted that his firmware hasn't been updated in 2.5 years, I'd say that's the likely answer.

Of course, it boggles my mind that someone would post (in multiple threads, no less) ridiculous theories like that, all the while knowing full well that he hasn't tried the most obvious solution yet. I just can't understand the reasoning behind that...

just sharing my obsevations which have been corroborated by some other members.

tinker tailor non-playing is a firmware issue since the studios required new copy protection codes earlier this year.

doesn't explain why dragon tattoo and ghost protocol were below average transfers.

i'm with netflix now and no issues so don't think its my equipment.
