I was only kidding about the BH200 getting a FW update. I think it's mostly been tapped already. The fact that it even got a 2.0 update is amazing. LG has been great in that regard.

Oh don't worry, they'll just upscale and smooth it out with DNR, then add some edge enhancement to make it look "crisp". That'll be $45.

I would happily buy another player for 4K. Bottom line as cheap as 1080p displays are now the electronics industry need 4K displays to make some money again. Plus a ton of films already have 4K masters so they are ready to go for the new format. Universal may be out of luck though as I don't see them having a 4K master on anything in there library.

Already does 4k slideshows, my PC burner does triple layer discs

Could you be more vague, Mike? LOL Sometimes your responses leave us with more questions than answers. What does 4K slideshows? What burner does triple layer? Where do you get such discs?

EDIT: Holy... After a few minutes on Google: BDXL is ridiculous. $80/disc? That's going to take a while to be affordable...

I never said everything would be upgradable to support 4k. Your Epson? Lol, now you're just being silly. It's a 1080p lcd projector so what would be the point anyway?

As far as screen size and distance? Well, that's part of your answer. It all depends on how big the screen is and how far you sit away. I've got a 100" dig 16:9 that I sit ~9ft away from. I would greatly benefit from 4k. It will probably be a while though before I get to though.

QFT

I was on the front lines for HD-DVD and Blu-ray, but probably the only thing that would keep me from being an early adopter to 4K would be the currently inconsistent Blu-ray content the studios are putting out. I know most releases are excellent, but it's the important ones (to me) that keep getting effed up. Between low bitrate BD25s, excessive filtering, and color/contrast issues, it feels like buying a Blu-ray is like navigating a minefield. What assurances are there that BDXL won't end up the same way?

I can see it now:
T2 - 4K Edition
100GB Disc! (23GB movie size)
4Kx2K resolution! (DNR'd 1080p blowup)
"Original" 4.0 lossy mix!
No extras
$79.99

Please forgive me for the hyperbole and being a little bitter. I was up late last night.

Looks like I'm going to have to double dip on every single Bond film released so far if I want to get the rest--they are releasing a boxed set of the entire series on Blu-ray to promote the 50th anniversary and the new film this year.

PETER JACKSON: The theatrical versions are the definitive versions.

I'm not a huge Bond fan and was only interested in the Connery ones and GoldenEye. Obviously the eventual individual releases won't match the existing ones, but I'm just going to have to set my packaging OCD aside. Unless they are entire new scans without any Lowry funny business, but that seems unlikely.

For sure Quantum of Solace will be double-dipped with more bonus contents.

The ONLY remaining ones I really want are You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds.

I'd take Golden Eye & maybe the Dalton ones, but they can keep ALL of the Roger Moores. I hate all of the Moore films, from silly to stupid.

The only reason I bought the 3 existing box sets at the time was to get the Connery's & Amazon had a big discounted sale if you bought all 3.

If all they are going to release this year is this megaset for $200, I guess I may have to live with laserdiscs of those 3 a little longer

As I already have CR & QoS, this set not worth me double-dipping to get films I hate.
I hope for individual titles at same time & don't care about gobs of extras. So bare bones but great masters would be OK by me.

2 more Connery's to go & OHMSS just because it's Diana Rigg & the movie followed the book pretty well

I don't think we'll have to worry about double(triple?)-dipping for future Bond sets. I just read that Daniel Craig will be retiring from Bond after Skyfall and that they've already signed up Jim Parsons as his replacement.

For 22 movies, $200 MSRP is a borderline steal. For 22 movies when you already have over half of them...that's a bit dicier, though at an expected $20 per movie individually getting the nine that's still missing is close enough that I'm willing to swing it. I'm just wondering how high the double-dip factor will be (if not astronomical).

...and I need your sweet love, Latina T-Mobile girl!

I would have loved to have seen new scans, but I am sure these are the same transfers that easily could have been released on bluray 5 years ago. More to the point transfers done around 2004-2005. The industry opinion and treatment of grain has changed consideably since then, but kudos to MGM for doing 9 of the films in 4K before HD discs ever existed.

I have a feeling until 4K bluray comes out next year in 2013 the films won't get remastered till then. QOS has a 2K DI so that may be the best it will ever look, but in all honestly the entire film needs to be re-edited anyway. The flash cutting is atrocious and if I had a License to Kill Marc Foster and the editors would have been dead years ago.

While not a perfect example of what the Blu-ray will look like, most of the Bond films are in HD on Netflix. I watched GoldeEye and didn't see any offensive filtering - at least nothing that I could distinguish from compression artifacts. Usually Netflix gets HD versions of films prior to or near the release of the Blu-ray. Obviously they are different encodes, but they appear to come from the same master. So far I've found it to be a good crystal ball.

Goldeneye looks good (1080i HDTV version) , lots of grain on what is obviously an old 2k scan.
But it is unmolested

GoldenEye is noticeably cropped on all four edges. I hope it is corrected for the Blu-ray.

I'm right with you on all of this. WOLT and Diamonds are the ones I REALLY want. But I'm not spending $200 for two movies. Hopefully, after they make a ton of money selling the box set, the individual movies will be sold separately.

So another year to wait.
