Hey guys,

I recently picked this up over here. Its VC-1 on a BD-50 with DTS-HDMA audio.

I think it looks very good and is certainly a classic film.

Although Universal is the distributor here it has Studio Canal logos on it, did they do a HD-DVD of it at some point?

Here are some pics:

Why? I use both formats and it can't hurt to compare.

Arguably my favorite movie of all time. (I tend to rank a handful of greats on equal basis...)

I'm still thinking of picking up the HD DVD at Fry's for some 6 bucks

Though, if this can eventually be had on BD with a master audio track (that is truly worthwhile), I may hold out.

I'd have no problem quadruple dipping on such a release (VHS-DVD-SE DVD-HDM)

No idea what GST is...possibly shipping?

At any rate, it doesn't indicate if it is Region-Free or not.

I forgot to mention, I also have an A PS3, so it does play on A machines.

Actually I think the disc has A+B labels on the cover.

GST means "goods and services tax," which Australia has for transactions within the continent.

Forgive my ignorance:

Does this mean that it will play on a US version of the PS3? (Or will it?)

I'm a newbie and I don't know what the heck I'm talking about.

Yes. The US is in Region A.

For those interested in importing other BDs, this list is accurate and includes many titles.

The Australian release is a Studio Canal encode.. The US HD DVD was done by Universal so they will be different..

Exactly what I was thinking. I doubt the audio on the Blu-Ray sounds much better on such a dated film anyway.

I don't know how it will compare to the Blu version of course, but the HD DVD version is nice. Nice contrast, nice clean blacks, nice colors. But yes, SlaughterX, the audio is what you'd expect and any audio encoding used will be up to the task!

Only 2 reasons why I wouldn't:

1: that 7 bucks would go into the upgrade price of the eventual (US) BD release. If I pay $22 for new BD, then it'd really be $29 going HD. (certainly, I could wait several years for BD to fall in price if I already have HDDVD...)

2: the SE DVD was a gift from my GF two years ago. As long as I've been considering picking up this HDDVD, I've had this nagging guilt about replacing her gift

Though, I'm glad to hear that what is a different encoding on Red is quite good. It's one of the few HD DVD-only titles at this point that is worth owning, imo.

I have seen the HD-DVD multiple times. I had no complaints about it.

If the Blu-ray uses the same transfer/encode, I don't think you could ask for much more from this release.

The 5.1 track on the HD-DVD (and previous DVD release) have indicated that it is a Logic7 track. I don't know what it is, but I don't think lossless sound will make much difference on this release.

#2 I can understand.

#1 I doubt any future Universal BD release would actually be an "upgrade". I owned the Australian HD-DVD which had DTS Master Audio sound -- it is not an upgrade, really, over the DD+ track of the US HD-DVD. They sound identical. And Universal's BD versions of HD-DVD titles have not been improvements, in fact if anything some have DNR applied to them (like THE THING).

For $5 THE DEER HUNTER is a gorgeous catalog release IMO and well worth picking up on HD-DVD.
