Thought this might be helpful to those just getting into BD

* Excessive DNR & EE compared to the HD DVD
! Studio does not consider this an issue. Consider the USA HD DVD.

Battle: Los Angeles

! LionsGate does not consider this an issue. Consider the collector's edition instead, which remedies the issues

The Fifth Element (OOP/original release)
* This title does not have any glitches, but it is being included because it has a poor transfer and the manufacturer is offering a free upgrade to the newer version w/ better transfer.
! Sony has a replacement program available.

! Warner has released a remastered BD with new artwork that is full 1080p resolution.

Gladiator (OOP white label barcode)

! Magnolia does not consider this an issue and is not issuing replacements; instead, they will release a new version in the future with correct subtitles for purchase. Return your disc if you are dissatisfied with the incorrect subtitle translation.
http://iconsoffright.com/news/2009/0...les_in_to.html

Lethal Weapon 2 (OOP)

! LionsGate has corrected the issue with a new pressing

Starship Troopers
* Editing error where a few frames of the movie are repeated, omitting what should actually be seen. Example: Faulty version --Corrected version.
! Sony has a replacement program available

Terminator 3
* Some copies have the main feature encoded in 1080i when IME is not enabled
! Warner has a replacement program available

Vote with your wallet. Don't buy Cinavia-infected Blu-ray Discs! Why pay a premium for pseudo-lossless audio damaged by an intrusive watermark in the audible spectrum?

Thank you for this great thread!

First an addition:

There's also a batch of Blade Runner BD sets (that, at least, Amazon has) which have essentially the opposite problem. Disc 1 and disc 5, though labeled correctly, both contain the contents which should only be present on disc 5. I just got two copies like this from Amazon last month, so some of them are definitely still out there, coiled to strike.

And now, a question:

Early days for this thread, of course, but might you consider expanding this thread to also include discs which misrepresent their intended content? I'm talking about situations like censored versions, incorrect aspect-ratios or color-timing, missing or replaced music tracks (due to rights-clearance issues, etc.) and non-original film titles. I could see a place in this thread for such discs, but I could imagine they might also comprise a worthy thread of their own.

I don't feel special...

You should include Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay. There is a confirmed (FilmMixer) DTS-MA encoding issue. I don't remember exactly what the symptoms are but there is definitely a problem with this title.

Interesting, I was not aware of that. Has that been sorted out, or is it a current problem. Original release only, or the new slimline release too?

That would be great, though some of those things might be hard to judge. If you have any info like that, go ahead and post it. I know for instance Roy Orbison, Gulliver's Travels', The Truman Show, and Robocop are all presented in the wrong aspect ratio.

Do you have any confirmation that Fox is actually sending replacement For Your Eyes Only discs? I know a couple people received them, but comments from their customer support staff made it sound like you'd still have to wait for a firmware update even with the new disc - i.e. the discs weren't fixed, they just sent a new copy of the same disc the way they did with Die Hard 2.

Glitch is that there is a soft popping noise at all seamless branching points.

I heard the issue was really fixed, yes. Whether those discs are the new pressings though is another story, because as you stated Fox has sent the wrong discs in the past.

Definitely current. As I say, I received two affected copies just a couple of weeks ago.

The two copies like this that I have seen are both of the new slimline variety, as was the correct set I exchanged them for.

Well I mean sure, firmware updates have been released for most all players so the disc can play back now. But did Fox ever even author a fixed disc? Do you mean you heard that fixed discs are out there somewhere, or just that the movie can be played fine now?

I really enjoyed the Event Horizon on blu-ray.. I don't recommend skipping it at all as it looks great, sounds not too shabby either.

28 Weeks Later BD for its terrible picture quality.

To sd, or to BD? That is the question.

Answer: Buy the one that is less expensive. (Who knows? Maybe the BD will end up in the $5 bin.)

Edit. I meant to say 28 Days Later, instead of 28 Weeks Later. Sorry about that.

That's not a glitch. The source material for that film is literally approximately standard definition - it was filmed with a consumer handheld camera, and not an HD one. You can choose to stick with the SD, that is certainly your prerogative, but no mistakes were made with the disc, and there is nothing that can be "fixed."

I was about to post the same response, but then I noticed s/he was talking about '28 Weeks Later', not '28 Days Later'. Having only ever seen the first one, I wasn't sure if this is also the case with the sequel. Imdb lists several taking formats, SD video among them.

Oh wow, you're right - I saw the PQ complaints and comparison to SD, and my mind just filled in the "Days" by itself, not noticing he said "Weeks." I wonder if he typed it wrong himself, as I don't remember any big PQ problems with "28 Weeks Later." It's no demo disc, but I thought it was a noticeable upgrade over the DVD. And while portions may be from SD sources, certainly the whole film is not.

I never knew about the problem with Event Horizon, and I just got my copy from Amazon a couple of days ago. Haven't watched it yet, but I wonder how they could have goofed with that kind of issue.

Lost Season 3 Blu-ray disc 5 is incorrectly labeled. Disc 5 is the same as disc 1. You need to call Disney for a replacement.

I believe it's a problem with the master as the most recent special edition DVD had the same issue.

This is somewhat upsetting as people had already complained about that disc and Paramount went ahead with using the same master anyways. It's not a huge issue for the most part (it's a great looking transfer otherwise - you'd think they could have just corrected it digitally without striking a new master) but it's quite aggravating when Paramount shows such blatant disregard.

I'd make a statement and return it as defective "due to verticle stretching of the image."

Vote with your wallet. Don't buy Cinavia-infected Blu-ray Discs! Why pay a premium for pseudo-lossless audio damaged by an intrusive watermark in the audible spectrum?

So are beta testing departments non-existent at all these movie studios? Because the number of Blu-ray discs with problems is god damned ridiculous.

I just looked at Serenity blu-ray and the DTS-MA track is mixed with the music and sound fx too loud and the dialog track is slightly distorted and under leveled.

Speed had an authoring issue that made it incompatible with the Samsung player out at the time. This was addressed by Fox and you could get it replaced. I used the PS3 at the time so I didn't bother.

If there's rot on some discs, that's a separate issue and I'll have to check my copy.

Golden Compass should be added to the list. It has the "popping" DTS HD MA issue. If you pause the movie, when you start playing, there is a loud annoying pop. Has not been addressed by New Line.

The Golden Compass "pop" issue is a general DTS issue shared with multiple other discs, and the fault actually rested in the firmware of certain receivers. Those receivers have since received updates that eliminate the pops. There was nothing wrong the Blu-rays, they were just coded in such a way that it exposed the existing flaws in the receiver DTS programming.

The only one that is truly a disc issue, to the best of anyone's current knowledge, is Harold & Kumar 2.

That is great and all, but I do not own another DTS HD MA Blu Ray disc that has these pops. My firmware for my Blu Ray player and processor are up to date.

In my house, it is a disc issue.....
