I agree with 357. Tropic Thunder does not belong in tier 0 at all! Tier 2 at best.

Just finished updating my spreadsheet.

As soon as I get a chance, I will update the thread.

My wife is pregnant, and her due date is this Saturday, so needless to say it has been pretty hectic for me lately.

The Towering Inferno (DTS-MA 5.1) - Tier 3

Dialogue was clear throughout. Sound was directed from the front. No appreciable use of surrounds. No significant LFE.
McQueen and Newman together, priceless.

Wow. I thought it had an outstanding soundtrack.

How so? The entire track is very inconsistent, except for the dialogue which is always clear.

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Sure, it had some bass issues, but I thought it was well balanced otherwise. It's one of those movies where I don't "notice" the soundtrack, which to me, means it's doing what it's supposed to. Clear dialogue is a big plus, and that movie has it in spades.

It's not referrence material, but I think it's better than tier 2 as someone mentioned above.

Great balanced track if you are into that

Yes, I really enjoyed this soundtrack. The dynamics were great, and bass was very enjoyable. One scene that stands out for me was when Night Owl swooped into the prison.

Watchmen (DTS-MA 5.1) - Tier 0

Dialogue was clear throughout. Good LFE. Frequent surround use. Directionality at times. Discrete sounds (glass breaking) Full natural sounding explosions, gunfire. As others reported the overall sound level was a little low so turned up the volume on the avr to -7dB. (The sound level wasn't as low as Final Destination 2). Once it was set I left it there for the duration, no need to turn it down for action.

Changeling DTS-MA - Tier 0

Mind blowingly good track considering the nature of the movie. Its one of those times where you truly forget you are listening to speakers. Surrounds are constantly engaged with very detailed ambient noise. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this soundtrack is how "airy" the sound is, making it wonderfully immersive. Dialog levels were immaculate. Actually I wouldn't oppose to this title being put in reference, but the fact that it doesn't have whizz bang effects and massive LFE, it won't be.

A movie/concert/documentary doesn't have to have action/effects to be in reference. If you think it is reference then that is your choice. Everyone has their own opinions and each is entitled to theirs as are you.

Che: Part One - DTS HD-MA - Reference

Excellent track with loads of ambience and discrete effects from all speakers, dialogue is perfectly balanced and dynamics pack a punch when called upon, LFE content is good as far as I can tell but my sub is lacking to really appreciate it, sub is soon to be upgraded though

Che: Part Two - DTS HD-MA - Reference

Same as above.

I have watched 1, 3 and 4 and 3 is without question the most impressive IMO from a AQ point of view. I would rank them from best to worst (again I have not seen #2) 3, 1 then 4. All 3 sound awesome, but 3 is definately a notch above the others IMO and I thought 1 edged out 4.

I am curious to read some other opinions on this though.

That sounds about right from when I had Tokyo Drift on HD-DVD, especially after seeing 4 in theaters. After that seen with the tanker truck the sound wasn't really up to par, at least not in comparison to the others.

I just got all of them on BD, I'll try to give them a watch next week.

Fast & Furious DTS-HD Master Audio Tier 0

High end of Tier 0 just below Reference if I was to rank within the categories. I actually really liked this mix. It wasn't as 'loud' as part 1 as the chases, explosions and even the dialogue just seemed to be mixed at a lower level. But it's a great track with excellent depth and surround field envelopment. My new Emotiva amp got a great workout with this movie.

Indiana Jones 4 (Dolby TrueHD) - Tier-1 or maybe bottom Tier-0
THE MATRIX (TrueHD) - Tier 0
MATRIX RELOADED (TrueHD) - Tier 0
MATRIX REVOLUTIONS (TrueHD) - Tier Reference
Serenity (DTS HD-MA) - Tier 0 Sorry Shadow. Thought there was quite a degree of imbalance in audio level.
Bourne Identity (DTS HD-MA) - Tier 1
Bourne Supremacy (DTS HD-MA) - Tier 0
Bourne Ultimatum (DTS HD-MA) - Tier Reference - I am at loss of words for this one.

Will post my opinions later if mood permits.

The Echelon Conspiracy TrueHD Tier 0

This TrueHD track surprised me. It was awesome. LFE very prevalent. Dialogue didn't miss a beat even with tremendous ambient noise and accompanying soundtrack. Movie pretty much stunk but both picture and audio were first rate.

Agreed......part 4 really needed a hyper aggressive audio track to go along with the completely ridiculous/over the top action scenes and it was just not quite there. Still a good track (I would go low tier 0 or high tier 1 if I was voting), but I definitely missed that extra aggression that 1 and 3 had.

2 Fast 2 Furious.....DTS-MA 5.1.....Tier 0

Overall a good sounding BD but not as good as the original in my book. Some of the dialogue was a little hard to hear, good use of the surrounds and good LFE.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone......PCM 5.1....Tier 1

Good sounding BD, but unfortuantely you can tell that the original track is 8 years old. Good use of the surrounds, some dialogue problems but not much and the LFE is not quite up to the current standards.

Red Cliff II (LPCM / DTS-HD MA / Dolby TrueHD) - Tier 1

From a distance this may sound fine but once you get into the listening couch you will learn how poorly this has been mixed. I had to reduce the SW volume by 5~7 db to get rid off the tearing bass which is accompanied by sudden moments of loudness, for instance, when the horses gallop, and when the battle ships are being docked off from the bay. The heavy bass is confined to the PCM track and seems to sound less pronounced with the companion tracks. Consequently finer elements of the mix appear subdued. There are moments where the mix reaches reference quality but I feel the sound design could have been better as it lacks the Intricacy, Fidelity, and Crispness. On the positive side, Panning effects are quite good with surround channels used at the right moments. Dynamics and Dialogue levels are quite good. I am still confused as to why this is being rated as demo material. Maybe I am wrong with my assessment or maybe I need to give it another spin.

Blu-ray : 340
