^^ I don't think Abbado recorded the 8th at Lucerne. Chailly and Gewandhaus Orchestra is likely a good choice.

That's unfortunate, it would have been great to have a complete set from him on BD.

IMO, no music collection is complete without Abbado's Mahler, Brahms, and Schubert.

I believe I may have it on CD somewhere....

That was helpful. Based on your reviews, I think I am leaning toward the Spanish production.

Thanks much!

The AV of this set is disappointing.
The 5.1 MA is hardly any more immersive than the 2 channel track.
The mix is somewhat of a mess too.

The video looks like an upconvert.

The outside movements of the 9th are WAY too fast, essentially taking a lot of the grandeur out of the work.

I have this blu-ray and I found it only average soundwise. You can find my review in amazon:http://www.amazon.com/Die-Meistersinger-Von-Nurnberg-Blu-ray/dp/B008GY8R98/ref=cm_cr-mr-img

Thank you.
I read your review and it appears the audio wouldn't be acceptable to me (when considering the issues you raised).
Again, thanx for posting back.wink.gif

I have a copy of the "Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg" in question. Since November 2012 in fact. I'd never gotten around to watching it until today.

I saw the same production live here in Chicago last year as it's a co-production between Glyndebourne, Chicago and San Francisco. At the dress rehearsal one of the jugglers on stilts was injured by an errant flaming torch. No flames in the subsequent performances. I was rather disappointed by the entrance of the Meistersingers in Act 3 as compared to my memory of a previous production.

I only checked out the first 20 minutes of Act 1 (in surround sound). I thought the overture sounded very good. I think I needed to adjust the sound level upward once the church scene started. Sonic image specificity is rather low on my priority list - perhaps since I usually buy tickets further back in a hall.

I look forward to enjoying the balance of the opera in the near future. In my view, at less than $30 at Amazon, this set is a bargain. (And it appears to be the only version on BD.)

Katharina Wagner's Bayreuth production of Meistersinger is also available on blu-ray...that's anything BUT traditional!! Only for the adventurous!

Perusing Amazon, there doesn't appear to have many choices on Wagner operas available.
Rienzi = 2
Tannhauser = 2.
Lohengrin = 2
Nearly all have modern staging too.

Can't we get reference performances on BD?
Performances close to what the composer intended?rolleyes.gif

Wolfgang Wagner's last production of Parsifal (a Bayreuth performance from the 90s) is being released soon on BD on the C Major label. Though not exactly naturalistic like the Met's old Otto Schenk, it could still be considered relatively traditional, in the post-WW II neu-Bayreuth style.

I completed watching the discs yesterday. I enjoyed this performance very much!

Recently I bought a couple of recent opera BDs:
* Le Grand Macabre by György Ligeti
* The Passenger by Mieczyslaw Weinberg

The Ligeti was on stage when I was on holiday in Barcelona. I saw a TV production truck behind the opera house. I could have gotten a ticket, but decided not to as I was leaving early the next morning. So it was nice to watch the BD to see what I had missed. A most unusual opera (and production).

Lyric Opera will be presenting The Passenger next season. I decided to have a preview. I've had the disc for almost 3 months now, so I'd better get around to watching it.

I find these non-traditional adaptations to be a perversion.
It's simply taking a work out of its original context without permission of the creator.

Going by the audio side some of the best sounding recordings where done in studio, but some of the best performances have been outside of the studio, if you can live with dvd quality you might find a find a recording of some of the older more traditional performances. A place to start: Wagnerians recommend Richard Wagner on CD or DVD ... www.wagneropera.net/Recommendations/Recommendations-2008.htm‎

Thanx for the recommendation (BTW, your link is broke).
However, I did go to the site and looked at their recommendations, which were rather interesting.

I am holding out for lossless audio, HD video and the composer's staging.
Unfortunately, looks like I'll be in for a long wait.frown.gif

I don't know about anyone else here, but I am a little disappointed regarding the lack of opera and classical music available on BD.
There is so MUCH in archives and vaults that could be put on the format.

Yes, there is a great deal of content in the archives and vaults, but it was NOT recorded with the technical quality that you'd probably expect or demand from BD.

I am generally quite pleased with the number of opera releases on BD. Exception: There were some of the Met's "Live in HD" productions that I'd like to buy, but were only released on DVD -- which is a "no sale" for me. Perhaps this has changed recently.

There are rather few symphonic titles on BD, but video does not add as much value as it does for opera.

Two recent Blu-ray discs with material "from the vaults":

Collector's Edition - Great Pianists of the 20th Century [Blu-ray] (2014)

Classic Archive: Collectors Edition, Vol. 1 [Blu-ray] (2014)
