Almost all of the titles that WB released on both formats feature identical video encodes and comparable/equivalent audio (for instance, the Kubrick's use PCM on BD and TrueHD on the HD DVDs). There were a few movies that had slightly different features (like the PIP/IME on the HD DVD of 300), but for the most part the trade-ins will be format swaps with identical content.

Some of these will actually be a downgrade in audio from Dolby Digital Plus to Dolby Digital, and some will lose special features like the PIP commentaries (green screen version of 300). But for me, it will still be nice to have these movies on Blu-ray--especially considering that I won't be sending back the HD DVDs.

Like what? I thought all of the audio downgrades were primarily Paramount titles. What WB titles are a downgrade in audio from red->blu?

Doubtful. The reason DD+ was needed on the HD DVDs was to reach higher bitrates (due to the reuse of DVD specs) that Blu-ray could reach with DD. Unless any of the DD+ tracks used bitrates higher than 640kbps as Paramount did (and from what I can see they don't), it's the same track and not a downgrade.

Well, then that's good news. I remember early titles like Training Day having a DD+ track. But if the bitrate is higher on the Blu-ray then I have nothing to worry about.

I'm also glad to be getting the TrueHD version of Superman Returns! Almost paid $25 for it just this week, and $5 sounds a lot better. Glad I waited.

Dumb idea, By the time my HD dvd players die,if they do, I will be able to buy the BD version in the 5 dollar bin anyway. Maybe if they would trade straight up disc for disc but to give them a movie I already have to get the same movie back and then pay them a fee????? DUMB..........

You don't give them your HD-DVD's, you give them them the case insert.

You keep all your HD-DVD's.

You're not losing the disks, I don't understand why some of you are so adamant about keeping the hddvds when you're not getting rid of them to begin with. The only reason I'm doing this is because I don't want my series' split between formats, like the HPs and Nip/Tuck series. Besides, HP GOF hddvds functionality was much better than the bluray version, and I'll still have the hddvd, so its a win win for me.

If anyone has done this, let us know what the $6.95 shipping really covers.

6.95 covers all discs which will ship together.

haha thanks for the delay Warner. Makes me feel like a sucker for selling off all my discs during Christmas to buy some of the same ones on Blu-ray. (I don't have the shelf space for both players, nor the patience) Oh well..can't win them all.

This is a pretty sweet idea although I wish they had it available in Canada. Looks like I either wait to see if they offer it here or mail the covers to a couple of my buddies living below.

I'll just give my HD-DVDs to a co-worker.

Kudos to Warner for this. Anyone who trashes them for this is nuts since they could do nothing or ask you send the discs in.

No: (300) It has to have UPC code. You can send either Complete or Ultimate Matrix. There is no difference in price!

In my case, I'm trying to simplify my set up which means getting rid of my XA2. I only have 6 HDDVDs that I would replace with Bluray versions (9 if I can get the individual Matrix series swapped) as I usually bought blu if there was a choice. If Universal and Paramount get in on this, I'll replace them all - minus a few dogs

I just got off the line with the Red2Blu support and here's what I found out:

1. It would seem that quite a few people have contacted them about missing back covers for the Ultimate Matrix Set and will release a statement in the next little while about whether there will be another way to send it in.

2. This program is basically a trial and there is a possibility that if it is successful it might be expanded later (possibly to Canada).

Does the Blu-Ray version of "Phantom of the Opera" have the same audio problem that the HD-DVD has (audio encoded really low on the HD-DVD)?

Also, anyone know when this might end or if it will end? I have 14 disc I'd love to trade but need to wait until I have the cash.

I only had a few HD-DVDs and bought most Warner titles on Blu to begin with, but this was a great way for me to get Casablanca on Blu for cheap

Now if only Universal would set up a similar program so I could get similarly cheap Blu copies of the Bourne trilogy...

I went ahead and took my chances. Like most normal people (I kid, I kid I trashed the little piece of glued on paper. I went ahead and sent in my four Matrix disc cover-arts with a nice little note saying I didn't have the paper. We'll see what happens. I'll either get the BR or I'll get my money back.

I think this is a great program for them and us. While I LOVE my HD-DVD player getting a chance to swap my media for the most current format out there is a win-win.

I ended up just getting 4 titles out of about 25 that I have. I'm exchanging Blade Runner, Ultimate Matrix, Batman Begins, and A Clockwork Orange. The rest I decided to take my chance that my 2 HD-DVD players will last long enough to make not doing the exchange worth it. Plus, a lot of those titles are movies that I may never even watch again (I got them cheap as closeouts when HD-DVD died).

I didn't have the little piece of paper either. But I was only going to send the inserts in from the 3 HD-DVD's. The Disc 4, 2-disc set is just a standard DVD. Maybe I should do what you're doing, and send all 4 and a note stating that these are from the Ultimate Collection.

I talked with there support also. The guy said the following:
  • They are getting lots of calls and positive feedback about the offer
  • The offer will most likely be good until december so there is no rush
  • They will be updating the ultimate matrix special instructions because no one has the piece of paper
  • They will be updating the Oceans 11 box set instructions since the instructions mention a upc code which does not exist
  • He also said they are adding more titles to the site
  • He mentioned that they will not be sending the hd-dvd cover art back to you
  • You will get a brand new shrink wrapped copy of the Blu-Ray
  • They are doing this to boost Blu-Ray player sales

Figured they wouldn't otherwise people would probably try to send it back multiple times to resell the BluRay's.

Interesting. I'm going to check this out and see what I can do.

Did Warner fix the out of sync sound for the first MATRIX film for BD? I cannot do lossless with BD (yet) and unfortunately, the HD-DVD lossy track had sound sync issues with numerous players, including mine.

Here's hoping Universal does the same. I have tons of their releases.

This is certainly a nice gesture from Warner, but I'll hang on to my HD DVDs. Since I greatly prefer the performance of my PS3 over that of my HD-A2, I generally only bought the HD DVD versions if they were better than the Blu-ray counterparts anyway. The only exceptions would be Casablanca and Batman Begins; one I got for free and the other has already been replaced, so I won't bother paying $12 just to get the identical BD.

Now if, say, Universal were to do something similar, I'd be tempted to trade up the Bourne flicks and the other releases they didn't bungle with DNR on Blu-ray.
