It looks like Warner Bros has finally launched a HD DVD to Blu-ray trade in program (red2blu.com).

For $4.95 per title (+ $6.95 shipping per order, up to a total of 25 discs), you can upgrade your WB HD DVDs to Blu-ray copies. All you need to do is send in the cover art from your HD DVD discs.

So basically, you get to keep the red discs (minus covers), and step up to Blu. I have 9 WB titles, so the total cost to upgrade for me is $52. Not particularly bad at all.

EDIT: WB will also send you a $15 off $50 purchase coupon when you do this.

Meh.

While certainly a nice gesture, many of the WB titles are available for even less than $4.95, and with shipping that's quite a bit less than $6.95...unless that $6.95 would be for ALL discs they'd send out in an order, which would seem unlikely.

If anyone has done this, let us know what the $6.95 shipping really covers.

I wonder if they send you the super fancy Casablanca Blu-Ray or just the disc?

Does anyone have a list of the WB Blu-Rays that are superior to the HD DVDs?
Earlier release HDDVDs were superior to their BluRay counterparts (the Superman movies, 300, etc.)

I have a bunch of these but I won't upgrade unless their is a reason.

For instance, the Sopranos set is exactly the same.
It might be worth it for future proofing, but I'm not sure.

Ultimate Matrix has some extras in HD that weren't on the HD DVD version.

What annoys me is that this program is only open to residents of the united states and not Canada. I tied placing my order and got to the billing form and it only accepts American addresses and credit cards (says the same in the rules in fine print). Anyone willing to help me out?

According to the original thread, the $6.95 is for all discs, not a per-disc basis.

Again, the above thread mentions you get the UCE version of Casablanca.

Off the top of my head:

The Matrix
Ultimate Matrix collection
Casablanca
I Am Legend (I think)
The Perfect Storm

Actually, the original Superman movies had the exact same specs on both formats. Superman Returns Blu-rays now come with PCM/TrueHD tracks like the HD DVD. 300 is IIRC the same AV specs, no IME.

I thought the complaint was that the Matrix used the same encode as the HD DVD. I never understood the complaint because to this day, I think it's one of the better titles available. In fact, I think the third movie on BD had some macro-blocking issues that the HD DVD didn't have due to some damaged files on storage, or something like that...the time stamps people provided I checked out on the HD DVD, and didn't see the problem that was so evident on BD.

Someone correct me if WB fixed that problem, or if I misunderstood.

Does anyone know if they'll send you a complete retail package? Or might they tear out the UPC or try to mark it? I'm not looking to try and store return or resell the items, but I don't want to have "vandalized" items sitting in my collection either.

I have about 16 or so titles that I wouldn't mind trading in for the Blu-ray. The price isn't too bad either especially if you just print out new covers for the HD-DVDs and sell them on ebay. Could turn out to cost only a couple of bucks per disc.

I'm a diehard HD-DVD fan (but also purple in my high-def purchases) and I think this is a great idea for (a) people that want as many titles in their high-def media collection in one format and (b) high-def media consumers reluctantly owning a handful of HD-DVD's (as gifts, burned purchase during 'the war,' etc.) that (c) don't want to blow a small fortune upgrading to Blu-ray copies that offer no visible/audible upgrade from HD-DVD. Only my "Harry Potter" HD-DVD's tempt me for a trade-up to BD (since the series will continue there) but not most of my other Warner titles. Besides, if red cases in your blue case bother you then the problem won't go away until Universal, Paramount and the other studios implement a similar trade program. Maybe Warner's is a test program to see if enough HD-DVD media owners trade to Blu for the other studios to justify the expense of a similar program.

$12 per disk? Err... that should be the average retail price of a BD, not the "trade in price".

Have you checked the completed listing on Ebay for HD-DVD's? Not getting a lot of bids these days!

Very interesting, thanks for posting the link. I don't think I'd do this for every title, but in the case of Harry Potter, where some will end up being blu with the older ones red, I'd like to make the swap for consistency across the set.

For the rest, there's absolutely no reason that I can't simply fire up the hd-dvd player to watch discs in the rare times I'll revisit those movies.

No Complete Matrix Trilogy? Boo. Is WB planning on releasing Reloaded and Revolutions individually?

It's $15 to upgrade the Ultimate Matrix Collection. And it looks like you only send in the paper that's glued to the back of the package for that one.

Ahh, gotcha. Maybe give them a call and see what they say. I'm gonna call them about Full Metal Jacket to see what they say. I have the crappy original version of that, not the deluxe edition re-release.

I'm keeping my copies! I'm fine with having both HD-DVD & Blu-ray in my HT. To each his own.

You already have the player and the movies! No need to trade, what do you gain?

I called about the program and learned the following:

They launched the program the 1st of April.
You will get a new complete package. (case, disc and art in blu)
Its unknown whether the UPC code will be vandalized or not.
Takes about a month to get your new discs.

They are still trying to account for all the various titles. I asked about the Matrix (Complete and Ultimate.) and they said they would contact me back.

For me I would gain better sound by upgrading. My hd-dvd player is an hd-a3 which cannot output the lossless audio formats like Dolby trueHD. My Samsung BD-P1500 can and this is the audio that all the Harry Potter movies have and I would like to be able to hear it. I will probably be upgrading the Potter movies.

Doesn't the A3 do PCM which is lossless no?

Good point! I didn't think about that. Well it is a good deal after all for some.

I have the A-35 & PS3. Also in some cases the audio quality on the blu-ray discs, I have, is lower than the hd-dvd. Ex. Happy Feet HD-DVD has TrueHD and Blu-ray has Dolby Digital 5.1.

My ticket from them says Ultimate Edition. And WBshop doesn't have any other version up. I already sent in my cover. Guess I'll find out $10 for the HDDVD + $11 upgrade/shipping is pretty good for a gift set.

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Since they closed this topic in the other forum, let me repost this here:

So what do you send back to Warner to switch out the HP boxset? There wasn't any cover art for that, just a thing that wrapped around the chest, and I might have thrown away a few months ago.

You would have to submit the "Year One" Case! NOT INCLUDING THE DISC!!

Have to admit, I am kinda tempted to do it for the Harry Potter set at least. I'm not sure I own any of the others besides Phantom of the Opera, and not sure I'm going to do it for that (although if I'm already paying for the shipping to do the HP set, I might just throw that one in too).
