Sorry to revive an old thread, but I thought it would be great to see the comparison from all the releases of Ghostbusters with the new 4K Blu-ray remaster, so people can see for themselves the difference.

It's a definite upgrade. From Indiana Jones, over at BD.com.

Looks amazing and how it could and should have looked years ago.

Indiana Jones over at BR.com mentions that the new disc is 32gbs whereas the original is ~28gbs, Sufficient space for extras, oh well but the improved PQ definitely merits an upgrade.

I would love for Run Lola Run to receive a remaster and perhaps its highlights would be restored as well.

Best Regards

Oh, yes.

The Fifth Element and Leon are high on my list, as well.

I'm loving the lack of gamma posterization, the finer grain is just a bonus.

Glad my pics are of some interest, have loved Ghostbusters since I was very small and was always disappointed with the DVD releases and while the BD did look the best it still had issues so when I heard a few months ago about this brand new 4k remaster I knew this could be the chance for them to set things right and from the little I have watched they have done a fine job.

If there are any other particular shots wanted let me know smile.gif

I am so glad I held off on buying the original Blu-ray release of Ghostbusters.

Hopefully Sony will get around to Starship Troopers (which already looks good on BR), Tommy (ditto), Men In Black and most importantly, a color correct "Dracula."

It was color correct. You want uncorrected color.

DRACULA is for another thread. Move along.

As for GHOSTBUSTERS... I may finally be able to dump my DVHS tape. This looks seriously potentially awesome.

How does the DVHS version compare to the orignal Blu-Ray version?

Anyway I was satisfied with the orignal Blu-Ray, this one looks better though.

It doesn't have any blown out scenes and the color timing is natural for the time period. Very 80's.The BD has more detail in many scenes, but less in others. All in all, the old old old transfer is a more pleasing and less flawed experience.

But this 4K transfer looks like it's going to allow me to chuck the old tape into the trash. Still reserving judgement until I have it in my hands.

How is it that Sony/Columbia can give use remastered titles without shifting colors to Teal/Orange?

Interesting.. I've only ever seen screencaps of Alien on DVHS which was being compared to the Blu-Ray version on another site. The DVHS version looked surprisingly very good and held its own agienst the Blu even though it was inferior.

I'd love to see more DVHS pictures being compared to their Blu-Ray counterparts.

But anyway why would you throw the tape into the trash? Wouldn't it have some value now? Would be better to sell it I'd think if you do upgrade to the new remastered Blu-Ray..

I can't actually sell that tape since I recorded it from a cable broadcast. That there would be ILLEGAL. tongue.gif

No, I won't actually throw the tape in the trash. It's just a figure of speech. But I learned the hard way, NEVER get rid of them BEFORE you see the Blu-Ray. I did that with BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA and have wanted to punch myself out ever since. What a colossal mistake.

The pics do look good. Any chance of comparison shots from the current BD?

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Oh right. I was under the impression that it was an actual pre-recorded official DVHS tape of Ghostbusters, but I guess not since after doing some research it was never actuelly released. So effectively you just used a blank DVHS tape to record a HD broadcasted version?

Yes, exactly. I have a number of faves on DVHS that I know I'll never have on Blu-Ray. Will GOTCHA! ever get a Blu-Ray release? Doubt it.

The only shot I don't like is the Stay Puft shot. Compared to the 2009 blu-ray, you lose a LOT of detail in the background. http://www.ghostbustersnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/bluray_comparison_05.jpg

It doesn't appear that anything was lost, it's just not as bright. You can always crank up the brightness and contrast on your display to get it back, if you want it.

EDIT: Yup, the detail is still there. Just double-checked on my calibrated display.

I think most of the older, original catalog releases on Blu-ray could be improved to this degree if studios gave them another go-around. The major studios have a much better handle now on all phases of the Blu-ray production chain, from the initial image harvest to digital processing to the eventual compression. Those tools were comparatively primitive a few years ago.

Blu-ray as it was always meant too be!

Sony didn't screw the pooch as it did w/some of the initial Blu releases back-in-the-day.
John Conner: "Are we learning yet?".

"I wonder if any of the releases had slipcovers though."
"Are these comfirmed to have slipcovers?"
"They look nice in those slips."
"This slipcover looks too good to pass up."

* I just picked up the 4K remastered Version> seems like a lot less artifacts in bright scenes, it's finer grain to it.

Does the new 30th anniversary release have the same exact encode as last year's 4K release?
