Day 1 - I've missed this one since I dropped HDDVD.

Built a new home, now filling it with sights and sounds!

Cool, I may replace the HD DVD on my server then if they put out a better version ala Full Metal Jacket. TKS

This seems to be using a new transfer.

HD-DVD screenshot I took

Looks like they just filtered away the aliasing ala Perfect Storm, and I doubt it's a new transfer so much as your renderer/decoder settings and DVD Beaver's are probably completely different.

Geometry and colors are different so I'm betting it's a different transfer.

I took it with ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 2 after breaking the DRM with AnyDVD HD. I didn't mess with anything besides saving the .bmp as a .jpg with The GiMP (98% quality). That's what the program gave me :/

I'm not saying your shot is wrong (well, maybe the resolution part), just that a side-to-side with the same settings would be more conclusive.

Getting my copy tomorrow so we'll see then.

Would love to see some HD DVD vs. BD comparisons on this one. Trying to decide if I should just keep the HD DVD given the price of the BD.

Is this actually out already? I'm seeing 10/6, 10/13 and 10/20 as the release date, depending on what site I am checking.

That's.. depressing. Warner continues to shovel out the crap transfers and encodes. Thanks a bunch.

Hmmm, not sure that is fair.
I have Willy Wonka on HD DVD and thought the transfer was excellent.
Just what I expect from a hi-def transfer (compare that to the awful Gremlins transfer).
But, that was still a transfer from an early 2000 DVD.
Since they went to the digibook route on Blu-Ray, we all expected a new transfer.
Since they didn't do that, I'll happily keep my HD DVD.

It's blurry to hide the aliasing, it appears to be horizontally stretched and it's just not a pleasing image. Honestly, I might prefer the aliased HD-DVD to the filtered Blu-ray.

And what's not fair about that? It is a crap transfer (aliasing) and it is a crap encode (filtered, stretched, colors appear off but that could be DVD Beaver). Warner continues to shovel out some of the laziest releases out there.

You have a right to your opinion and I agree there are issues with the transfer at times but the last word that comes to my mind when watching is "crap".

Willy Wonka (1971) does fill 1.78. Charlie (2005) has a black bar on the left side of the frame.

interesting... mine does not. it's floating within the normal image area of the monitor.
was there a BD version where this was an issue?
