I'm assuming the BD in the combo pack is the same unlocked BD as is sold by itself.

Yeah, it's just a budget re-packaging and re-release.

In which "free" universe is that?

16 USD = 100 SEK
Blu-ray 39SEK
Shipping 60SEK

I rounded it up 1 SEK (30 cents), what a profit eh?

Well this sucks. A month later, I get an e-mail from amazon.fr that my order got returned nondeliverable (thanks to Google Translate for turning the French e-mail to English).

My address was correct, and amazon.co.uk has no trouble shipping to it.

I'm not going to bother reordering, so I guess I'll have to wait for an eventual Region A release.

Unfortunately this is an ongoing issue with the low cost shipping option specifically from Amazon.fr (not with the other Amazon stores), it is remedied by upping to a quicker shipping method (different carrier) but it'll cost ya...

I had the same thing happen 3 times. I emailed them and commented that something is wrong with DHL, my address is correct. They sent me a form letter back. So, I decided to try the more expensive UPS shipping and that worked. I ordered 3 other titles besides Open Range to make it worth while.

Maybe that's got something to do with why DHL got out of the within-the-US shipping business?

Ask Tompa if he can still get you a copy... I got mine from him in under a week... $16 and it's perfect!

Resurrecting this thread.

I got tired of waiting for a US release and bought both the German release and French one.

German:
Region B locked
Image is a bit washed out, low-ish contrast and saturation similar to the DVD and HDNet versions. Black levels are a little too high.
Audio levels are quite high compared to the French release, but excellent quality.

French:
Region free.
Greater saturation and contrast than the German release. Color timing is a bit different but saturation is the main difference. Black levels are where they should be, with no loss of shadow detail.
Audio suffers from the "sped-up" syndrome common to PAL conversions, even though the frame rate is 23.9 same as the German. Oddly the run time is also shorter, but this may be due to opening logos.
Audio levels are lower than the German release, but equally dynamic.

Both these releases are flawed, but neither really falls into the "bad" category. Apparently the French version was converted to 25 FPS at some point then re-converted (badly) to 24. Weird.

Edit to add: I ran both versions all the way through at the same time on 2 different Oppo players. The French release gained about 8-9 seconds on the German release over the course of the film.

If you were to recommend the better version between the German or French discs, which would it be?

Thanks

I wouldn't recommend one over the other, they are both flawed but adequate. I sold the German and kept the French, mainly because its region free but also because I prefer the image.

If you're a fan of yellow tints and weird pitched audio, get the French...

Anybody that knows how this movie is supposed to look like? Was it washed out and under-saturated in the cinema or did it look "normal"?
I have only seen the PAL DVD (several times) and always run it (on a projector) with heightened contrast (without blowing highlights), increased saturation and lowered brightness. Then it looks beautiful and "normal".

Thanks - the German version seems readily available on Amazon UK for an OK price so may get that. I do have a HDTV broadcast that I recorded last year that looks good, but it was a different aspect ratio to the DVD, still looked good

Amazon.fr should still have the French release for a similar price.

Finally received and opened the German disc. Popped it into the player for a quick scan through, not watched it all yet.

I think it looks nice and it certainly sounds nice. PQ-wise its not up there as being razor sharp but a pleasing image however the colours are a little more subdued and match the TV HD version that I recorded a while back. I think the DVD version had more vibrant colours. The TV version was also 16:9 rather than 2:35:1 on the BD. In fact the BD looks like the TV version had black bars added to it, so that you actually see more image on the TV version than the BD! I assume it was 2:35:1 at the cinema?

My HD TV version had 5.1 DD soundtrack, but this DTS MA soundtrack (although the box says DTS High Resolution) sounds great, much fuller sounding and the gunshot sounds at the end boom and echo brilliantly in the surrounds. The scene at the starts where they are out in the storm....I thought it was raining in the room itself !!

All the menus are in German, and the opening title also has German i.e. "Open Range - Weites Land". I can live with that !

I paid about £9 UK for it, so I'm pleased with it, and it is sharper than the HD TV version I have, but looking at it now its not a night & day difference !

Since I can't grab any trustworthy screenshots of the Scandinavian release, I just uploaded two quick scenes to youtube. Of course the compression by Youtube ruins it but it's just to give an idea about color and contrast

That has the same "washed out" look as the German release. I prefer the look of the French, but the audio of the German. frown.gif

Zombie thread, ACTIVATE!

After humming and hawing for a year, I finally ran out of patience and ordered the German disc from Amazon UK for 7GBP ($11) with free shipping. Region B Locked, but MakeMKV had no problems with that.

The audio is brilliant. The DVD was excellent and so is this.

IMO the picture quality is a vast improvement OVERALL to the DVD. Fine detail and no artifacts. The only downside - as mentioned many times - is the brightness of the image is excessive at times which leads to lighter-than-reference blacks and slightly washed out color. This can be mitigated by messing with display settings, but honestly it's not bad enough to deprive yourself of the pleasure. By the time I get to that point, I'm too engrossed in the excellence of the film to notice.

Well worth the $11.

EDIT: Phrasing.

I bought the german release a couple years ago. I can't play it from disc since no region free player here but it looks and sounds good from Plex. I had heard the french release had issues and the german was the better of the two. I didn't know about the color issues with german, they looked ok to me but I have yet to watch it all the way through, I just played the opening scene and the gun fight, which sounded absolutely amazing. I always thought the DVD sounded good too.

I'll see if I can get a full play of it this weekend.

This line intentionally left blank.

Then don't worry about it.

The colors are just a bit washed out due to the brightness boost. The French version has an audio speed-up issue, but I haven't heard it so that's based on what others have stated.
