Hmm, I'm actually not impressed. I prefer the Amazon.de exclusive and, in light of this domestic announcement, have now ordered it (I'll have to pray that, if it is Region B locked like GLADIATOR and BRAVEHEART, I'll get word before release date so I can still cancel it). It is probably made of "cheap" plastic, versus the domestic edition being actual metal, but I'm a sad sucker for the fact that the German release encloses the discs in the primary hull.
I believe I saw that Amazon did have this as an exclusive, and I definitely canceled the original pre-order of just the Blu-ray alone, and I pre-ordered this one instead. Thanks for the heads up, and may be more worth the while.
Also, the Enterprise runs on puppy power and beer? Well, guess that CBS/Paramount's certainly been keeping that one a secret for far too long.
I have seen one seen of the BD and I suspect they have gone to far with the scratch removal (in that scene)
Because when Enterprise leaves spacedock, you see it in one frame and its completly gone in the next one. Maybe a bug or something because there is a very special cracking sound in the speakers at the same time.
I'll be out of town this weekend, and it just so happens there's an IMAX showing Star Trek where I'll be. Looking forward to it, since I absolutely love this movie.

Although I do own the Playmates version of the Enterprise "Iconic Vehicle, " I still have to think that it won't match up to the quality of a Diamond model, tho. Had Diamond beat Playmates to it, I certainly would've jumped on that a long time ago.
My understanding was that ArtAsylum (who does the Trek stuff for Diamond) was offered the Trek movie license but passed because they would not be able to manufacture the toys in the necessary quantities a blockbuster movie like Trek demanded. Their product tends to end up in comics shops and specialty stores who usually only stock three or four of each item, not dozens like the Toys 'R Us chains.
I find Art Asylum's stuff to be generally superior to Playmates with better sculpting and things like screws are far less visible. Their new 1701-D (both original and All Good Things version) is absolutely massive and a thing of beauty. Hopefully, they'll get to produce a version of the movie's Enterprise for the more modest comics outlet market at some point.

3 hours till show time. Time to take my wife out on the town for some pre-IMAX cocktails and prep her for any possible nerd rages that may ensue should the projectionist screw something up in the presentation.

Are you seeing it on a real IMAX setup, or an IMAX 'Experience' theater? All of the releases in my area this time around are 'Experience' theaters. None of the real IMAX theaters here are showing it.

Shark, from what I can tell, it's a real one. Chattanooga, TN. Anything will beat how I've previously seen it, though - real IMAX or not. In the lobby now on my Iphone...
Edit: I believe I read it was in 1570 format, with a 12,000 watt audio system, which I think makes it a real one....I think.

Yeah, it was. However, I wasn't impressed. During nearly the entire film, there was at least one (usually more) foreign object on either the lens or the film, and my wife and I both agreed that the movie will sound better at home.
One moment, the picture would be razor sharp. Then it would be nearly out of focus. During the conversation between Kirk ang Pike, Kirk looked great while Pike was blurry as hell. Several moments like that throughout the film.
The sound, while dynamic, sounded "stressed" in the high end at times. Like someone who was trying to impress a visitor by turning their home theater up beyond its capabilities.
I volunteered to take a survey of the place before we went in, and I left my impressions on it. It was still quite enjoyable, but that has a lot to do with how much I like this movie. The sound wasn't "bad", just not as good as I was expecting. The video left a lot to be desired, though. I'll note that the oldest employee I saw looked about 18 years old. If there were older ones there, I didn't see them.
We've had a number of report posts about the on-going discussion concerning ST models etc. Though I appreciate members excitement for the new release the the CD/SD package that includes a model, this forum's focus is on the tech. aspects of the PQ and AQ of the video release and the associate specs/special features etc. The focus on models etc is really not appropriate place at AVS.
I really enjoyed the new movie and I'll be picking up the BluRay when its released but I've got to say, the final art for the standard BluRay packaging is one of the most disappointing covers I've ever seen. This may be the first instance where I whip up my own custom cover or see if I can DL something a little more imaginative and colorful.
