Really? Seems surprising that no one's really said anything about a new transfer yet...

Yep. But now it seems like it got delayed, again (8th of july). But Czech has released it.

From a thread at Blu-ray.com:

Apparently it's got a brand new master (or so I'm told). I can't wait to pick it up after work.

Anyone here got it already?

I'm sure it would've hit the street on time if a certain team had been knocked out in an earlier round, lol! EVERYTHING there has probably been put on hold unitl after the WC final.

Can we ( in the USA ) use the Czech version, or we have to wait for the German one. Or just wait until we get it in the states?

Why would the german release work, but not the Czech? How do you know that the german release will be regionfree?

Here's a novel idea, just wait for it to come out in the States. We all know we're getting it later this year. Save the extra few bucks and see it then.

Do we? Gladiator is a Paramount disc in the US, while it's Universal elsewhere. Paramount might not get around to releasing it for a while, if they do actually release it.

In the Netherlands a version is now in stores that uses the very same steelbook packaging as the 2009 release, but with two stickers on the BACK-side, one at the top indicating this to be the 10th anniversary edition, and the other covering the old barcode with a new one. Disc one of this release now has a brown-ish colour, while the second disc is still white, as were BOTH the discs in the 2009 release. One obeserver now reports that this IS a new transfer, possessing all the qualities that were so lacking previously. This has not yet been confirmed by other users, but I'll be picking this one up later today and get back here as soon as I know more.

Very encouraging indeed:

Quote:

The image is nice to cinematic, detailed, good black levels, light fine grain, even a tiny white speck ocassioneel between the grain (absence DNR). I have good arrows and fireballs rain in the beginning, frame by frame, monitored. None disappeared, or was interrupted.

He says he's going to post pictures if he can.

I can already tell you the pictures will look great. I just bought and watched it and I'm thrilled to confirm that this edition is a winner. All that's left to say is "Hail Maximus!".

I remember some of the insiders on another forum were initally defending the original Gladiator release - one of them claiming all of Ridley Scott's movies look digital. lol. On any rate, really looking forward to this one and I'm glad it's not taking years to come out. I'm sure the screenshots posted will look day and night compared to the original.

I would certainly take issue with that claim.
However, Gladiator looked "digital" to me in the theater and on DVD.
I dunno...maybe it's just me.

So it's only available as a steelbook right now?

Yes, and when the official packaging finally arrives, it is expected to be a steelbook too.

After having carefully examined large chunks of the remaster again, there is a caveat to report, though not one to even remotely disqualify the transfer as a whole. During the complete battle sequence and some scenes that play out in the vicinity of the battlefield, it seems the people responsible for the transfer deemed certain parts a bit too murky and drab to be considered HD and therefore decided to fiddle around a bit with the brightness-, contrast- and colour-settings to make these parts come across more vivid. These manipulations can come and go in a flash, often literally appearing and disappearing from one shot to the next. For example, the infamous moment where many of the arrows and fireballs disappear in the non-remastered version now has blue (!) trees instead of green and clearly demonstrates contrast boosting and possibly some brightness too, but the shots directly surrounding it don't. Another example is the shot where an on the run Maximus rides on his horse wounded and in a daze, marred by very obvious ringing in the non-remastered version, it thankfully doesn't have any of the ringing here, but looks much brighter... a bit too bright actually, because some of the cloud detail disappears due to overradiance. Maximus himself on the other hand can be seen a bit better... but should it be like that?

There's no reason to let this deter anyone from going for this version though, because just about all the rest of the movie simply is blu-ray at its droolworthy best!

Looks like we've got a winner, folks:

Old
New

I'd say this not only decimates the old release by a considerable margin, but also improves considerably on the extended edition footage from that release.

Now someone tell me where I can order a copy!

The grain looks a litte bit synthetic and there are white stains on the right and it looks a little bit overexposed:

The colour ist different...looks a little bit we have green horses now:

Here they zoomed out, take a diffrent color choice and the picture ist brighter:

Encoded grain usually is synthetic, but it looks alot more filmlike then any other release of this movie.

Says nothing about how accurate the colors are, Ridley do like to tint his movies.

Not only is it brighter it also manage to give us greater dynamic range.

I want my grain region free.

The scientists are going nuts over gladiator, convinced the low-resolution super35, and the intentional processing are DNR, and because they saw a few pseudo halos under their magnifying glasses on some buildings in screenshots that there is great sin *sigh*

lol, we've seen this sort of behavior before, no?
Has anyone on that forum actually seen the Blu-ray movie in motion yet?

What it shows far more is the limitations of Super35 photography, and a lack of understanding of the process or memory of how the film looked theatrically. The scenes with his family are super smooth to give them that dreamlike quality. The edge halos are so minor, and only in a few places that you actualy have to go looking for to notice. These are the same people that are complaining they see sharpening in the theater for pete's sake.

If anyone thinks that this disc went out with anything other than Ridley Scott's stamp of approval, they're kidding themselves.

I've blown up the images on DVD Beaver as much as 300%. There's nothing there I'm seeing that anyone who hasn't trained themselves to be hypersensetive is going to pick up on on the film in motion. The photography is full of backlighting, and the bloom tends to combine quite often to something that's mistaken for oversharpening

Well I suppose the confirmation of the new release and its far superior quality is a nice little vindication for those of us that were banned at other forums for pointing out how incredibly awful the "Sapphire" edition was.

So to any insiders or studio representatives that may have advised me to the contrary regarding poor Blu-Ray video releases: I will NOT sit farther from my television and I will NOT drop movie watching as a hobby. However I WILL continue to complain about poor quality releases, I WILL warn other buyers and I WILL wait for a proper version before handing over my hard earned dollars.

And having said that, I'm really looking forward to the US release of this new version and will happily plunk down first week pricing to own this.
