Finally we have Payback as it was in theaters coming to Blu on 9/28 (UK release) but is Warner so should be region free. It looks like this contains both versions of the film. I love this movie but hated the Directors Cut... there were lines removed and a different score which I really felt took the dark humor out of the film. I'm not sure what the specs are but the Directors Cut was pretty true to source from what I remember so here's hoping!

Good catch! I agree with you about the DC vs TC. I bought it on hd dvd and sold it the next day. It was almost offensive to watch what they did to a very decent movie.
Should be cool...on BD!

1080P at last!!!

Wow! Agreed; good catch! It's not like I really needed anything added to my already brimming September want list, but I'll be adding this nonetheless. I would imagine it will be two separate BDs because the color palette of the director's cut is radically different throughout from the theatrical version; no way they could do seamless branching here.

Agree, the DC laid a turd.

The DC is interesting because it's the film the director originally wanted to make before the project was kind of wrestled away from him. The theatrical and the director's cut are essentially the visions of two different people.

I do prefer the theatrical myself, but I think it was cool that Brian Helgeland got the chance to go back and make the film he had originally intended.

different strokes. i prefer the dc - i thought the story line with convoy's kid was weak. but whatever - they should have released both originally, so it is great to see it is being done that way now; hopefully the specs and (more importantly) the vid/aud quality will be top notch...

oh, and hopefully it will be region free.

anticipating more info, for sure. (@ op) thx for the tip.

What's the biggest difference? I saw it in the theaters and own the DC BD and my sig is obviously a line from the movie...so I can't believe I didn't know this. Now, I'll be lining up to pick this up as well.

Entire characters and storylines don't even exist in the DC and the endings are completely different as well. Visually, the films are also different as the TC has a blue sheen to the entire picture.

I thought your sig was a response to Paramount regarding Gladeeator

Curious -- what are you saying you didn't know? You didn't know the two versions were completely different?

Ha! That's appropriate too. It's what Resnick tells Stegman in the restaurant when Stegman offers to pay for the lunch. Great scene!

I knew it was the DC that I had, but just did not really think about how vastly different it was to the TC (since there was a considerable amount of time between viewings).

To elaborate, approximately half of the movie is entirely different. The first half is mostly the same, though there are minor differences throughout.

Pre-ordered this for import a couple of days ago. A must have as I find the DC to be pure garbage. With this title, Dances with Wolves and Green Mile coming out in the UK in the next few months it's going to be import city for me.

My equipment: JVC RS55 for 2D, BenQ W7000 for 3D, Carada 40x117 2.925:1 AR BW Criterion screen, Navatar .8 HD conversion lens, Darbee Darblet, region free Oppo BP93, Toshiba HD-A35 HD-DVD, JVC HD-DH5U D-Theater, Mitsubishi HS-HD 20000 DVHS, Pioneer CLD-97 LD player/AC-3 mod, B&K AC3 Demodulator

Out of curiosity, I saw the TC only once. I bought the DC and I like it. As mentioned above, it's nice to see that the director got a chance to give us the film he initially wanted to make. ...So what was the ending in the TC? I can't remember.

My biggest gripes with the DC was #1 the score as all that great retro brass was totally gone IIRC and #2 some of my favorite lines and scenes were gone, the first one that comes to mind is when Lucy Liu said "Hey where you going fat boy? ... yeah I'm talking to you". Can't covey the humor without the accent but you get the idea. I know there was much more but like the member above I watched it once and sold it the next day.

Heh....to me the DC is >>>>>> the theatrical. I always felt the theatrical was not dark enough, not hard enough. The DC became that movie. Much better film all around.

It really amazes me that there are people who like the theatrical cut at all, much less claim to prefer it over the infinitely-superior director's cut. The DC is a night-and-day improvement. It takes an outright bad movie and makes it moderately decent.

But whatever. Different strokes for different folks.

Considering that the two versions of the movie have entirely different color timing, I'm going to have to assume that this disc will contain two separate encodes. Seamless branching wouldn't work.

A big part for me was the humor factor... the TC was really a dark comedy and the DC was a straight up revenge flick, no humor. Like you said different strokes but I think in this case the two versions are so different that although I hated the DC I can still see why some would prefer it and it's tone over the TC.

Ditto. But I'd still rather watch Point Blank. Gibson ain't no Lee Marvin.

I may agree with that had I seen the DC first but comparing it to the TC after being familiar with the TC it did not seem humorous to me at all and was missing the music and many of the lines that I felt made up the dark humor of the TC.

I would pre-order this, but it was always cut by 5 seconds at '18' to remove the use of a butterfly knife. I hope it gets re-submitted, as it would be passed uncut today...

Definitely going to order this import, as I much preferred the TC, I was dissappointed and couldnt stand the DC. Not to get off topic but I would also like to see a TC from the movie Revenge.

TC and DC are completely different movies (color, music, edit) and seamless branching will not work....

CORRECTION.... its a 2 disc set....
