I don't know the ranking methodology that well for the audio tiers but Short Peace, an anthology of animated shorts, has one of the best surround tracks I've heard from anime.

Winter Soldier IMO is the overall audio track to beat so far this season and a solid reference audio track from my perspective.

Guys,

I would like to hear your opinion about The War Horse. I think it is another reference grade track.

Have not watched in a few years, but I was VERY impressed with that track! Great one for sure!

Agreed, its been a while since I've been on here and noticed that the BD picture quality hadn't been updated for a while then I was directed to the current thread that is up to date. I looked around but couldn't find an up to date version though. I hope this thread can get updated soon.

It takes a fair amount of work to keep something running more than a year or two. Compounding the problem is that the responsibility almost always lands on one person. The Picture Quality Tiers would have died years ago if I didn't update it every three or four months.

The upcoming Dolby Atmos Blu-rays should land very highly in the Audio Tiers. Someone told me that John Wick's Dolby Atmos soundtrack is awesome.

The title that gets me mad that did not get released with Dolby Atmos is Fury. It was awesome at the theaters and thought for sure they would release it on Blu Ray with that soundtrack. Maybe a double dip?

Sorry for the confusion, then what did it mean when I saw it at the theaters in ETX?

I am not sure what "ETX" is, sorry. Did you see this title in a proper ATMOS cinema? I guess if there wasn't a current ATMOS title showing they could have put this title in the ATMOS theater. Also, I think Film Mixer stated that there is no cinema "upmixing" going on so you heard the proper 5.1 mix.

By many reports here the mix on this is awesome and I am looking forward to hearing it in my home theater.

Yes this was a full Atmos theater that I saw this movie when it came out.

We didn't mix "Fury" in Atmos... 5.1 only.

ETX is a premium in house AMC experience. It includes a large floor to ceiling screen and custom 11 channel sound system.

They do use a passive upmixing technology to expand 5.1 and 7.1 to the proprietary 11 channel speaker setup.

However, the studios, on a title by title basis, allow the use of the upmixer..

I'm not sure what Sony's position was on that film.

Ah I see. So that is confusion for me. AMC says Atmos so I right away thought that meant the movie was a true mixed sound for Atmos. Now it makes sense. Thanks!

Cat People. One to skip on Blu-ray for sound.

The Blu-ray version has a DTS-HD MA 2.0 and 5.1 track on it. I am not a fan of re-mixes of Dolby Stereo tracks so I purchased this disc thinking the 2 channel track would be the original Dolby Stereo. Very disappointed because the 2 channel track is now almost mono. The 5.1 is not any better.

The DVD sound track is much better than the Blu-ray version.

That often seems to happen, sadly. A film will get a 5.1 remix and the original audio will get forgotten, replaced by a new downmix.

Reference all the way for Fury...

I wish all movies sounded this clean. I watched this at reference level with my subs running 4dB hot and loved every minute of the audio presentation. I connected on an emotional level to the sound design and thought the score was another "actor" on screen. The atmosphere was spot on and loved the background sound design as well as the sounds coming from off the screen. I wish it had just a bit more weight in a few scenes but I am nitpicking...

Big thumbs up to FilMixer on Fury! Bravo! I really felt like I was in the tank when it was being shelled! Shows you how good 5.1 can still sound

Ragnarok is one that flew under the radar and has a fantastic sound mix and hard hitting unfiltered LFE. Well worth checking out for the audio alone and I thought it was a fun movie as well!

Another vote for Fury. Awesome AQ. Watched it last night and this along with Lone Survivor are my favorite audio experiences in a movie so far.

Was also very proud that my GF commented that our HT setup sounds more impressive than the cinema

The Quiet Ones has a fairly impressive audio mix, peppered with spacious surround cues and sounds panning across the soundfield. I am not sure the horror movie would work without the audio's contribution.

Interstellar (DTS-HD MA 5.1) - Reference

One of the best scores I've heard. Great use of all channels, immersive and clean.

The dialogue was harder to hear in some scenes, I had been forewarned, so upped my center channel by half of a db, took care of any problem. Not sure if it was needed, I will be watching it again (loved the story) at my calibrated level to double check.

Low end was great, again was warned by folks in the subs thread that this will seriously move your subs(one described blowing one of his subs), so was careful with some scenes since I have apartment subs. No going near reference for me.

Anyhow, excellent.

I enjoyed the audio in Interstellar, but not quite reference IMO. IF this thread was still alive and well, I would go tier 0.

For any multichannel music fans and/or 3d fans, the Lichtmond discs have some of the best audio and 3d I have heard/seen on my setup. 2 and 3 are particularly impressive I thought, but 1 is not far behind.
